Some allegories set forth the deceptive enticements of the Devil and his defeat by Christ; others present qualities as examples to be imitated or avoided.

In 1823, she was put on trial, along with her servant Anders Andersson, boatswain Johan Andersson Flatås from Gothenburg (the spouse of her paternal aunt), the fisher Christen Andersson and his servant Carl Börjesson from Styrsö. They were accused of having attacked, plundered, and killed the crew of the Danish ship Frau Mette, which had been found plundered at Fotö, with its crew slain to death. Hård denied all charges, but her co-accused testified that, while Hård had not been present during the attack on the ship, they had planned the whole act in her home, with her as the leading figure and brain behind the whole plot.

In January-February 2016 Thompson presented a sculptural ready-made work Sucu Mate/Born Dead (2016) at Hopkinson Mossman in Auckland. The work consists of nine headstones that were given on loan to Thompson for two years from the Balawa Estate cemetery in Lautoka, Fiji. When the work was shown later that year at the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane, the gallery said: > This cemetery contains the graves of colonial migrant labourers from India, > China, and elsewhere in Asia, who were indentured to sugarcane plantations. > The cemetery is segregated along racial and social hierarchies. Colonisers’ > graves occupy the upper part of the graveyard, which is set on a hill. > Indigenous people are buried in the central section—including the artist’s > own grandmother—while migrant labourers are interred at the bottom in an > area which floods heavily.

The name of the new album, A Shipwreck in the Sand, was announced on 29 January 2009, when the band concluded a viral marketing campaign by announcing the track listing via an album website, also revealing it would be a concept album. Along with the demo of "Broken Stars", which the band had been performing during their final U.S. tour in support of "Arrivals and Departures", short clips of the songs "Vices", "Born Dead" and "American Dream" were made available on MySpace On 17 March, the band filmed a music video for "Vices" with director Robby Starbuck. Later, on 23 March 2009, the band posted the full album to stream on their official MySpace page.

"Cryptopsy - The Unspoken King review Metal Storm Canadian review site Grayowl Point was very critical of the album, accusing the band of abandoning technicality in favor for a more brutal sound. Reviewer Michael Rhombus went on to say "Believe it or not, the vast majority of metal fans couldn’t care less about brutality and are more concerned with musicianship. Matt McGeachy apparently thinks his audience are fourteen year olds jerking off looking for crunchy guitar noises and has for the most part ditched the abstract part of Cryptopsy." Reviewer Kevin Stewart-Panko of Decibel gave some lukewarm praise in a 2011 retrospective article about the record, stating that the opening track "'Worship Your Demons' is about as good a Cryptopsy album opener as there ever has been. It’s surprisingly catchy without sacrificing any technicality [...] However, when they conclude the typical Cryptopsy of [the song] 'Born Dead' with more singing and an anthemic, almost modern-rock chord workout, it seems more tacked-on than natural or flowing.
