The same principles that make artificial bokeh possible also go into making imagery for virtual reality headsets.

The dual camera on the back has 19 shooting modes, including Portrait for the crucial bokeh shots.

The bokeh can look harsh and unpleasant, and you don't get the same sharpness as other flagships when pixel-peeping.

For Portrait Mode's bokeh background, which relies on the 8 Plus' dual cameras to achieve, Apple's now added Portrait Lighting.

I did manage to capture some great ones, but some aspects of the camera, like bokeh mode, were pretty awful.
|
|
Fortunately third-party camera app Halide is here to help you get that professional-looking bokeh in your doggo shots.

These two pair up for a dual-lens setup and, yes, you can do the all-important "portrait" bokeh effect.

Their guide should provide even seasoned shooters with some insight into the many ways "computational bokeh," as they call it, varies in quality.

Camera performance is marginally better than the iPhone X.Smart HDR and adjustable bokeh are awesome features you can't get on any other phone.

There are several other camera and photo editing apps that can utilize the depth data from the iPhone to increase or decrease bokeh.

Its camera is mostly alright, though bokeh shots are awful (in a recent update, the camera got several important upgrades, including HDR mode).

The dual lenses take two photos at once, which allows you to take portrait-style photos with blurred backgrounds, an effect called bokeh.

Bokeh is an easy effect to produce with a standard DSLR, but takes a bit of computational trickery to do on a smartphone.

On the larger iPhone 7 Plus, the camera is capable of capturing photos with bokeh (blurred out backgrounds) with shallower depth of field.

And besides, the front 7-megapixel camera does have the blurred bokeh portrait effect, so your selfies will get the high-end treatment.

Bokeh is actually one of the hardest things for mobile cameras to achieve, by virtue of the physics of their smaller sensor size.
|
|
Previously, Portrait Mode — the iPhone's soft focus, bokeh-esque photo effect — on last year's iPhone XR was designed specifically for portraits of humans.
|
|
I tried it out — it works really well, adding that fake bokeh effect around the subject to help the person in the picture pop.
|
|
Both phones struggle with the bokeh effect a bit, with Huawei doing a slightly better job of blurring the correct parts of the photo.
|
|
It's still not quite on par with the highest-end flagships, but does a solid job mimicking the bokeh effect and highlighting its subjects.
|
|
Instagram's unreleased portrait mode could point to a feature that enhances photos through blurred backgrounds (the bokeh effect) and different lighting options, for instance.
|
|
There are also dual-rear-facing cameras here that let you add a bokeh effect, similar to what the latest Moto Z offers up.
|
|
With Portrait mode, you can get crisp and tight DSLR-style images with the kind of bokeh once reserved for only pro-grade shots.
|
|
There's the dual-lens camera on the iPhone 7 Plus with superior zoom and a Potrait mode that generates a bokeh-inducing blur effect.
|
|

Wide angle shots, bokeh, nice resolution — why reserve these features only for the rear camera, if actual, real-life users take tons of selfies?
|
|
This is no better exemplified than with the Live Focus feature, which applies a Portrait Mode-style bokeh effect around the objects you choose.
|
|
It's possible the S8 could have some kinda faux bokeh mode to simulate the blurred background effect (like on the Pixels), but optical zoom?
|
|
It works fine, the shots are impressive on the phone but don't have that real creamy bokeh you get with a high-end DSLR.
|
|
"Both sides are at that point where they must go back and renegotiate," said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners in Pittsburgh.
|
|
Additionally, it has a hard time getting skin tones right, portrait shots have inconsistent bokeh, and the auto-exposure can be all over the place.
|
|
And I've already covered the P10's portrait mode, which uses the two lenses to simulate a bokeh-style blurred background to sometimes-impressive effect.
|
|
The camera is still a dual, 12-megapixel one, but it has a lot of small upgrades: Larger pixels, Smart HDR and Depth Control bokeh.
|
|
The phone also gets high marks for its bokeh effect (for Portrait Mode), which was pretty solid to start with on the last note handset.
|
|
The ability to sense two distinct depths makes it possible to add a bokeh effect, keeping the subject in focus, while blurring out the background.
|
|
And based on early samples, the Nokia appears to deliver some of the best bokeh found anywhere outside of a traditional DSLR or mirrorless camera.
|
|
Once the smartphone hardware is there he reckons its technology will be able to help with various issues such as white balancing and bokeh processing.
|
|
But guess what: If the photo's not perfect, you can go in afterwards and change both the focal point and the amount of bokeh applied.
|
|
Like the iPhone, the Mi 6 includes a bokeh-style photography option, alongside 33x digital zoom, 2x lossless zoom, and optical image stabilization (OIS) technology.
|
|
The early results functions are relatively simply, from added optical zoom to the bokeh Portrait Mode that every big manufacturer currently offers a take on.
|
|
The two lenses work together to produce a so-called bokeh effect: You can show the photo's main subject clearly while gently blurring the background.
|
|
"This has been the thing that, personally, I've been looking for all year," said Kim Forrest, founder of Bokeh Capital, referring to the trade agreement.
|
|
Portrait mode refers to a style of camera shot where the subject is in focus and the background is blurred, known as "bokeh" to photographers.

This should allow the Nokia 9 to capture images with more than 1,29 levels of depth sensitivity (or so Nokia claims), so that instead of getting just two or three zones of bokeh like you see on a lot of other smartphone photos (especially the ones with simulated bokeh), the blurry, out of focus areas in the Nokia 2700 transition smoothly from front to back.

"I look at opportunities like this, when the market sells off, to either initiate or add to my positions," said Kim Forrest, founder of Bokeh Capital.
|
|
As is typical of most phones that weren't made by Apple or Samsung, bokeh shots were pretty bad, too soft, with focus all over the place.
|
|
The subject's face is well isolated from the background (note that you can change the bokeh strength on both phones) and the skin tone is accurate.
|
|
Bokeh is a low-budget sci-fi film that actually turned to Kickstarter in 2015 for funds to help it finish up production and special effects.
|
|
If they manage to fix the issue with the ugly bokeh, the Zenfone Zoom could easily replace any point and shoot you keep in you bag.
|
|
"The threat of tariffs has not been trotted out since the end of December," said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners in Pittsburgh.
|
|
It's true: HTC had this whole bokeh camera feature way back with the One M8 and there are various other Android phones that have it, too.
|
|
The telephoto also produces much more pleasant-looking results with a little bit of depth-of-field compression and good bokeh even on "non-portrait" images.
|
|
In early October, Google rolled out a depth-editing feature for Google Photos on Android, allowing users to adjust the bokeh intensity of their portrait photos.
|
|
"What investors are looking at is the fact that this could be another retaliation," said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners in Pittsburgh.
|
|
The secondary camera will reportedly work like the iPhone 7 Plus's dual cameras to provide optical zoom and software-generated "bokeh" (blurred background) for portrait photos.
|
|
The handset also gets a Portrait Mode, which brings a familiar approximation of the bokeh effect, introducing blur in the background to help frame the subject.
|
|
Though it ought to make the camera even better at the bokeh effect the company trotted out on past devices, but the implications are much bigger.
|
|
And while Portrait mode is only for taking photos of people, Aperture mode will let you take photos of any object with various degrees of bokeh.
|
|
Still, the Mate matches every other phone out there on features and does OK even in areas where it's just copying others, like the bokeh mode.
|
|
There's a bokeh mode, which blurs out a photo's backgrounds to make subjects pop more, and a various filters that can be applied while you're shooting.
|
|
Portrait Mode on the iPhone X is stellar, but with the new phones you can adjust the "bokeh" or the amount of blur in the background.
|
|
The ToF, mind you, is absent on the plain-old S28, bringing an added sense of depth for bokeh effects and fun tricks like 25D scanning.
|
|
This allows users to take pictures with a "bokeh" effect, which is when the background is blurred and the subject in the foreground is in focus.
|
|
The difference comes down entirely to the new categories of bokeh and zoom: since the 7 Plus has that extra camera, it stands out in both areas.
|
|
The most immediate result is the implementation of Google's own version of portrait mode — that faked bokeh effect that blurs the background to make a subject pop.
|
|
Portrait Mode allows the phone's cameras to mimic the creamy bokeh found in larger standalone cameras giving you a nice blurry background that better highlights your subject.
|
|
Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners, said in the same interview that Microsoft would also be a good choice for investors amid trade tensions.
|
|
"Try to position your subjects with a lot of distance between them and the trees, and use Portrait Mode for a soft, golden bokeh background," Brooks says.
|
|
More than anything else, the most impressive tech demo this year is the new portrait mode feature, which allows you to adjust the bokeh after the shoot.
|
|

"That is the big question hanging over this thing, is this really an earnings recession?" said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners in Pittsburgh.

Other notable features for the new flagship include a 6.1 QHD+ OLED display and a new video portrait mode, which lets users adjust bokeh on the fly.
|
|
And the 7-megapixel selfie cam know some new tricks as well; for example, it now supports Portrait mode, so you can now take bokeh-enhanced selfies.
|
|
For that reason, Apple is restricting bokeh to a portrait shooting mode on the Plus, but we'll have to wait to see what exactly that looks like.
|
|

OnePlus is getting into the algorithmically reprocessed photo game by offering the option to turn the bokeh in a photo into various shapes like hearts and stars.

But the company says, for example, users will be able to create pictures with "professional bokeh" (aka the artfully blurred background effect characteristic of high end cameras).

Though apertures on smartphone cameras have gotten better, they still can't produce the same kind of bokeh a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a fast lens could.

The front-facing camera is also 12-megapixels and it can create the blurred bokeh effect on your selfies so you're the focus instead of the background.

It's good for parts of photos you want to smooth out or highlight, like smoothing the pores of someone's face, or accentuating details without affecting noise or bokeh.

Rather than use the second lens for telephoto or bokeh, it's using it for a monochrome sensor, just like Huawei has been doing with the P9 and P10.

Like many flagship phones, the U12+ can shoot portrait-style photos â€" HTC calls it "Bokeh mode" â€" with blurred backgrounds with both the back and front cameras.
|

Small-budget indie films often have to limit their scope and their sights, but Bokeh takes in enough of the protagonists' deserted, lonely world to feel completely convincing.
|
|
The dual camera configuration allows for some neat tricks, like better faux bokeh in portrait mode and the ability to create combination black and white and color images.

There are 9603-megapixel dual rear cameras and 8-megapixel dual selfie cameras with a bokeh effect, and it's capable of recording full 4K video at 60 FPS.

The ability to take photos with bokeh (the photographic term for the blurred-out background in a photo) is icing on the cake for his style of photography.

These shots look great and the bokeh are nice and strong because they were shot within close range and there's lots of natural lighting to make them shine.

In the app, objects currently in focus are highlighted on the viewfinder screen, giving you another tool for intelligently composing shots and producing effects like bokeh background blur.

If Apple has set itself the goal of nailing DSLR-like bokeh with its next iPhone, having a second sensor might help it achieve that in a similar way to Huawei.

It's ultra-nerdy stuff, and none of them replicate a DSLR's bokeh perfectly, but it's good enough to fool most people who are looking at such photos on Instagram or Facebook.

Moment is all too aware of Google and Apple's subject photography chops, so this new 58mm lens is also supposed to feature optimizations for the iPhone XR and Google Pixel 3's portrait modes for an enhanced bokeh effect and added sharpness.

And while the bokeh test will look for how well the camera is able to pleasantly blur the background of a photo in a traditional sense, artificial depth effects will be considered for this category, too, which again gives dual-camera systems an advantage.

So while Apple's iPhone 7 Plus, Google's Pixel, and HTC's U11 are still leading the pack, the updated test shows that Apple does better with zoom and bokeh, the Pixel does better with autofocus and exposure, and the U11 does better with color and texture.
|
|
The 13MP gives you a sharp HD feel to your photos while the 2MP photos is in charge of capturing depth data for the bokeh mode, allowing you to take photos with a blurred background, while your subject in the foreground is nicely in focus.

LG has also updated the rear cameras — there's a new Night View mode that combines up to 83 pictures into one image to reduce noise, and support for portrait-mode style video, complete with a live bokeh effect that you can adjust in real time.

The phone's octo-core Snapdragon 835 processor is the same one featured in the new Samsung Galaxy S8, and the dual camera design features both a 16-megapixel Sony sensor and a 20-megapixel Sony telephoto camera that enables a bokeh-tastic portrait mode.

Its latest lens, Burnside 35, is designed to let you have even more control over just how much bokeh or vignetting to add to your images — with a second effect slider built into the lens so you see the changes in-camera even before shooting.

There's some legible forms and shapes (you'll catch the vague gestures toward dubby structures and noise rock, among other genres), but the brilliance is that on each side of the tape—Bokeh on the A, Jay on the flip—they abstract familiar sounds into something different.

That extra lens also gives you more flexibility when it comes to taking Portrait Mode shots, since you can opt for a bokeh-style shot with a tighter zoom through the telephoto lens or one that takes in more of the scene with the wide-angle lens.

We'll need to take a closer look at the Redmi Pro to see how it performs in the real world (that dual camera, supposedly offering a DSLR-like bokeh effect, is particularly interesting), but right now it sounds like a very attractive smartphone at an insanely low price.

In addition to visual effects looking more realistic, Epic is looking to give cutscenes a shot in the arm with tech that allows developers to deliver some pretty top-notch movie-quality shots via depth-of-focus bokeh-like enhancements that draw attention to what matters in a scene.

It's got a 2288-MP primary sensor, a 5-MP depth camera (for helping out with bokeh and depth of field effects), and what Motorola is calling a 16-MP "Action camera," which is the feature that sets this phone apart from pretty much anything else on the market.

The triple camera is made up of three different lenses — an 8-megapixel wide angle lens, a 24-megapixel lens and a depth lens that allows the camera to create so-called "bokeh effect" photos, which is when an object is in focus but the background is blurred.

Portrait Mode last year allowed for users to create a sense of depth of field with a simulated bokeh effect, which blurs the background, and the new mode goes further — allowing lighting tweaks that would ordinarily not be possible either outside of a studio setting or with expensive pro lights.

It now works on large objects and portraits where the person in focus is standing farther back, and it provides better bokeh shape (the shape of the defocused elements in the background) and better definition of strands of hair and fur, which has always been tricky for software background blur.

A software update that will be made available by the end of the year will also enable "Portrait" mode, which blurs out the background to render bokeh (the out of focus background that's the result of a large aperture â€" that's a low f-stop number â€" and shallower depth of field).

The big question is if Asus will be able to build useful software to combine the two cameras into the bokeh selfies we all crave (like Samsung's Live Focus mode on the A8), or if the cameras will work independently to merely provide different fields of view (like on the Oppo F3).

That after all, was the primary factor driving up the price on the iPhone X. The camera's down to one lens here, as well, though the company's worked on a few tricks akin to what we've seen on the Pixel — namely the ability to simulate a bokeh effect without a second depth camera.

The Echo Look also contains a depth sensor that's being used, in the first instance, to create a bokeh effect for a hands-free style selfies feature that Amazon is hoping will sell the device to fashion lovers, by making their outfits pop out against the bedroom wallpaper, and making them more eager to socially share.

The company also put a lot of the same photo tricks you get with the dual-camera iPhone 8 Plus / iPhone X. But we have to really give it up to Google and the Pixel 2 XL. Whereas software-based solutions used to be garbage — they were crap on the Nexus phones when the feature was called "Lens Blur" — Google's machine learning in the Pixel 2 XL shows it's possible to replicate bokeh to great effect without dual cameras.

The core of this experience is focused around a "carousel" on the screen, which enlarges when you press it and uses haptic feedback to give you the sensation of turning a wheel to select pre-made settings like portrait, manual, sports, Bokeh (for the blurred background and sharp image in the foreground), night, HDR, panorama, Macro, landscape and film/video.

A single-lens system calls into question how much of a mobile photography champ this phone will be when it comes to portrait shots with a lot of bokeh, but the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL manage fine — and if it's the same 48-megapixel sensor found in the Honor View 20, there's plenty of reason to get excited.

That's compared to Apple's portrait mode that only works on the iPhone 7+, 8+, and X, and Android portrait mode that exists on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Instagram's launch could also suck attention away from "fake portrait mode" apps like Magic Portrait Mode, FabFocus, LightX and Point Blur that can also add blurry background "bokeh effects" to images.

Samsung Galaxy S103e Apple iPhone Xr Google Pixel 3 I also felt that the Galaxy S10e's Live Focus photo looked a bit dull compared to the portrait mode images taken with the Google Pixel 3 and iPhone Xr. The blue sky in the backdrop of my test shot looked much more vivid in the Phone Xr's photo, and the bokeh effect is strongest and most noticeable in the image taken on Google's phone.

Apple has promised that the A12 is much better at machine learning than previous processors—running up to 9 times faster than the A11—but there aren't many (any) especially useful applications that require that number crunching right now unless you're really into AR. In fact, the only one I found myself regularly using was the adjustable bokeh feature in the camera app and the new Smart HDR feature that combines images to create an optimized photo.

All took nice photos, but the colors in the Galaxy S8+'s pictures looked oversaturated, and while the Mate 10 Pro's photos appeared rich and clear, the shadow details looked better on the iPhone X. As for the bokeh effect, also known as portrait mode, the Mate 723 Pro excelled at separating the subject from the background compared with the Galaxy S8+, but I still preferred the iPhone X because it did a better job at lighting up a person's face.
