In 1990, Xenocide was ported to the IBM PC by Manley & Associates (programmer Doug Deardorff), however without the involvement of Pangea Software. This new team successfully defeats the E-Street Bloodsuckers, a gang of Harvard drop-out super-powered hoodlums, thanks to a well-timed slap from Mary. The Super Buddies are then kidnapped during their first team meeting by Roulette, who brainwashes them into serving as gladiators in her intergalactic metahuman arena.

The band was formed in 1987 by high-school friends Nenad Jovanović (guitar, vocals), Dejan Radovanović (guitar), Zlatko Šetvić (bass guitar) and Zoran Aković (drums). Starting under as Salame (The Salamis), and then Krvopije (The Bloodsuckers), the band finally chose the name Lutke (The Dolls). The lineup for a short while had also featured Saša Pavlović on guitar (who later had become a monk at the Mount Athos), which was one of the many lineup changes the embryonic band lineup had featured. The default lineup recorded a demo recording during 1987, featuring the songs "Ti si tako otrovna" ("You Are so Poisonous") and "Ja sam opet tu" ("I Am here Again"), produced by Srđan Babović, later known as a turbo folk producer.

In ancient times, myths of blood-drinking demons were widespread, including Lilith who feasted on the blood of babies. Fictional vampires—haematophagic parasites—began in the modern era with Count Dracula, the title character of Bram Stoker's 1897 gothic horror novel Dracula, and have since appeared in many books and films ranging from horror to science fiction. Along with the shift in genres went a diversification of life-forms and life-cycles, including blood-drinking plants like the "strange orchid" in The Thing from Another World, aliens like H. G. Wells's Martians in The War of the Worlds, "cyber-vamps" like "The Stainless Steel Leech" and "Marid and the Trail of Blood", and psychic bloodsuckers, as in Arthur Conan Doyle's The Parasite and Robert Wiene's 1920 film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

In 2002, Burton, Jim Steinman, and David Ives had worked on a theater production called Batman: The Musical. Steinman has revealed five songs from the musical. The first is the opening theme for "Gotham City" and the entry of Batman with his tortured solo "The Graveyard Shift"; followed by "The Joker's Song (Where Does He Get All Those Wonderful Toys?)", "The Catwoman's Song (I Need All The Love I Can Get)", "We're Still the Children We Once Were" (the climactic sequence) and "In the Land of the Pig, the Butcher is King", sung by the corrupt bloodsuckers ruling Gotham; the last song mentioned here was covered on the Meat Loaf album Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose. After production was cancelled, these songs were released on the Batman: The Musical memorial site.

It was now a national emergency and was the fault of one person: a morbidly obese girl named Bunty Porker, who ate almost every hour and threw her containers and other used packets across her neighbourhood and town, creating a litter mountain the size of two mountains. The UK smelt terrible and attracted insects from all over the world, from bloodsuckers to disease-spreaders. The Queen telephones the Prime Minister and demands that he fixes the issue, so Parliament decides that Bunty should be captured by the army, led by Colonel Buffy.

With the rise to power of the dictatorial regime after World War II, the Vrioni were stigmatized by the ideologues of the "Class conflict" as the symbol of traitors of the nation and class enemies. For four consecutive decades, in all textbooks the Vrioni were portrayed as bloodsuckers and associates of the country's enemies throughout centuries of the Albanian nation, turning so to the ideal enemy of the dictatorial regime. The dictatorial regime expropriated and nationalized all the Vrioni properties and destroyed much of their cultural heritage, including historic manors in Berat in 1947, of which only the ward where the Berat Conference of May 1944 was held in, was retained. The state executed by hanging and firing squad, or imprisoned and exiled to concentration camps and forced labor camps nearly all members of this family.

Rick Swan reviewed House of Strahd for Dragon magazine #205 (May 1994). He said that House of Strahd for the Ravenloft setting was the "best thing to come flapping out for this setting in many a moon", declaring the original 1983 classic I6 Ravenloft module one of the finest adventures and that "the re-issue improves on the original". He called Strahd's castle, consisting of almost 100 rooms, "an architectural masterpiece, as opulent as it is creepy" and of the main villain, declared that a "high-level necromancer of incomparable cunning, Strahd holds his own with Count Dracula as one of horror's most memorable bloodsuckers". Swan felt that the "elements that made the original so much fun" were still there, but it was the updating "that pushes the revised version over the top" and notes that Nesmith "touched up the descriptions, clipping the clutter and beefing up the sensory details".

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Eurasianism gained influence in Russia, claiming that a genetic unity of the peoples of Eurasia had to be established, since they were threatened by chimerical, parasitic influences - namely by the Khazars, a medieval Turkic people of Jewish faith. The stereotype can also be found in anti-Semitism, which is widespread in Islamic countries in connection with the Middle East conflict. After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, wealthy Jews in the country were accused of exploiting their Muslim workers as "bloodsuckers" and transferring the profits for arms purchases to Israel.

In 1937, the anti-Semitic writer Louis-Ferdinand Céline (1864-1961), in his Bagatelles pour un massacre, published in Germany in 1938 under the title Die Judenverschwörung in Frankreich (The Jewish Conspiracy in France), took up the accusations of the early Socialists and denounced "the Jew" as "the most intransigent, most voracious, most corrosive parasite". He expanded the metaphor by equating it with a cuckoo, a breeding parasite that does not build its own nests, but hatches its young from other birds, raises them, and lets their young die. The stereotype was also widespread in the Russian Empire and served to justify acts of violence against Jews. During the expulsion of the Jews from Moscow in 1891, Konstantin Petrovich Pobedonostsev, a close advisor to Tsar Alexander III, to an English guest, declared: Around 1900, the journalist Pavel Alexandrovich Krushevan (1860-1909), a member of the Black Hundreds, regularly rioted against the Jews in the magazine Bessarabetz, calling them "bloodsuckers, fraudsters, parasites and exploiters of the Christian population".

Any anautogenous adult mosquito would need a host to supply a blood meal before it could lay viable eggs; it would need time to mate, mature the eggs and oviposit in suitable wetlands. These requirements would not be realistic in Iceland and in fact the absence of mosquitoes from such subpolar islands is in line with the islands' low biodiversity; Iceland has fewer than 1,500 described species of insects, many of them probably accidentally introduced by human agency. In Iceland most ectoparasitic insects live in sheltered conditions or actually on mammals; examples include lice, fleas and bedbugs, in whose living conditions freezing is no concern, and most of which were introduced inadvertently by humans. Some other aquatic Diptera, such as Simuliidae, do survive in Iceland, but their habits and adaptations differ from those of mosquitoes; Simuliidae for example, though they, like mosquitoes, are bloodsuckers, generally inhabit stones under running water that does not readily freeze and which is totally unsuited to mosquitoes; mosquitoes are generally not adapted to running water.
