The building is set on a sloping lot, exposing the basement in the rear, and there is a two-story ell there, which provides pit toilet facilities for the building. As commercial flying increased, the Bureau encouraged a group of airlines to establish the first three centers for providing air traffic control (ATC) along the airways. In 1936, the Bureau itself took over the centers and began to expand the ATC system. The pioneer air traffic controllers used maps, blackboards, and mental calculations to ensure the safe separation of aircraft traveling along designated routes between cities. In 1938, the Civil Aeronautics Act transferred the federal civil aviation responsibilities from the Commerce Department to a new independent agency, the Civil Aeronautics Authority.

After a grueling eleven-day standoff, the convicts finally made their desperate escape attempt just before 10 PM on Saturday August 3, 1974. They moved out of the library toward the waiting vehicle in a makeshift shield consisting of legal books taped to mobile blackboards that was later dubbed by the press the "Trojan Taco". A pace stick is a long stick usually carried by warrant officer and non-commissioned officer drill instructors in the British and Commonwealth armed forces as a symbol of authority and as an aid to military drill. While the financial reward of his day job was appreciated, Reed's passion was religious education and he saw his mail order business as doing God's work. By 1911, turnover for the business, which they called Sunday School Supply Stores, had reached ₤1,000 a year. On reaching this milestone, Reed sold his typewriter business to focus solely on the mail order business. Sunday School Supply Stores provided a range of goods, from cards, badges, clocks, hymn sheets, blackboards and the like to religious games, as well as bibles, tracts and testaments.

As stated in a 1952 Chicago Tribune article to commemorate its opening, the building was “state-of-the-art” and included curved walls and an arched auditorium ceiling to reduce echoes, sound-absorbent pads in the recital hall to push sound into the audience, and green “blackboards” and yellow chalk in classrooms to “reduce the long- standing gripe from students about blackboard glare.” While some of those “state-of-the-art” features have since been replaced to make way for 21st- century technology (electronic "smart" boards, no more blackboards), many of the building's features remain to help preserve its history.

The original wood-trimmed alcoves — present in all four classrooms — contain coat hooks, cubby holes, and a storage closets. The floors in the original portion of the building are stained maple tongue-and- groove, and the floors in the 1930s-era classrooms are colored concrete. All of the original doors are intact, but much of the historic door furniture was replaced over the years. The plumbing fixtures within the boys’ restroom may be original, while the fixtures within the girls’ restroom are not.

For 40 years he taught courses in general biology, general botany, plants & people, and plant identification. Windows are covered with a specially produced paper product made of mulberry tree fiber. A symbolic back door leading to a windowed bay that faces Heinz Chapel alludes to a door in the Myeong-nyudang which leads to the Sungkyunkwan's courtyard. The south wall displays three documents that explain the letters and principles of the Hangul, or Korean alphabet, which was created by the court of Sejong the Great in 1443. A display niche to the right of the classrooms blackboards contains a book illustrating Crown Prince Hyomyeong's matriculation to Sungkyunkwan in 1817, while another niche displays the Four Treasures of the Study: brush, ink, paper and ink-stone.

Coming into the Derby, Empire Maker was the "chalk" (horse racing term for favorite, taken from the days of a bookmakers chalking the odds on blackboards). Both of Frankel's Derby entries were beaten by the longshot Funny Cide, but Peace Rules led for over a mile and held on for third place and a check for $110,000. In the Preakness Stakes, Peace Rules was the second choice on the morning-line at 8-5, behind only the Derby winner in a full field of twelve colts.

Traditionally merchant seamen were administered from a Mercantile Marine Office; the local port office of the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen. Such offices existed in major Ports such as Glasgow, Leith, Newcastle/South Shields, London, Southampton, Cardiff and Liverpool. The "MMO" was managed by a Mercantile Superintendent of the Civil Service and his team of clerks and messengers. Much of the TPLF nationalist appeal made the point that peasant poverty and lack of infrastructure in the villages were the result of state domination by an Amhara elite that wanted to keep Tigray in subjugation. Peasants responded by asking the TPLF as "sons of Tigray" to supply their communities with the facilities they needed, and high on the list were schools. The Front responded by preparing the curriculum and overseeing construction of "green" (camouflaged) schools that could be hidden from the Derg. Merchants typically supplied blackboards, exercise books and materials from the towns, and maintenance and salaries of 100 Birr a month were paid by local residents.

The Coaches Pavilion is the school's gymnasium, which was renovated in 2005 and again in 2007. The floor was renovated in the fall of 2008, 2009, and 2014. Late 2006 saw the construction of the Salem Student Commons, a new cafeteria and study hall area. During the summer of 2008, Conal hall underwent a major renovation, in which many aspects of the hall were upgraded, most notably: the installation of larger and more energy-efficient windows; the addition of LCD projectors in every room; the replacement of traditional blackboards with whiteboards, as well as the replacement of all lockers, ceilings, and lights; and upgrading the electric and network infrastructure of the campus.

The second floor held eight women's cells with mattresses, plus a bathroom with a porcelain bathtub and "all the modern conveniences". Brant's "especial pride" was the boys' reformatory school room, with blackboards, where he said he was willing to teach if necessary. The rear part has one story, 122.8×35 feet with 30 steel cells for up to 120 adult male prisoners "so as to separate the young prisoners from those old and hardened in crime" because "mixed up with the men, they can learn nothing but wickedness". The outer walls are very thick, potentially expandable upward to add a second story of men's cells and a permanent chapel, though that would never happen.

In the years to follow, the new facility allowed for increases in both the size of the student body and the number of faculty members. Such facilities as a drafting room, photographic darkroom and a soda fountain were appealing to the students. The school also featured, according to news accounts of the day, such modern innovations" as a public address system linking the principal's office to all rooms of the school and green glass chalkboards, replacing the old familiar blackboards." On November 16, 2006, it was announced that alumnus Jack Cullen had made a gift of $2 million to support construction of new science laboratories and classrooms, as well as the annual school musical.

Slate in Pennsylvania (1933) by Charles Behre Quarries in this region of the country remained active throughout the first quarter of the 20th century producing roofing slate, slate for electrical uses, as well as being the largest producer of school slates and chalkboards in the country. The Slatington Slate Trade report for January 4 of 1880 showed that quarries in the town of Slatington alone had shipped 81,402 squares of roofing slates (over 8 million square feet) as well as 40,486 cases of school slates and 243 cases of blackboards. The Slate Valley (the district of Granville, New York) is well known for its slate. Slate was quarried in 1839 at Fair Haven, Vermont.

Whiteboards are analogous to blackboards, but with a smoother surface allowing rapid marking and erasing of markings on their surface. The popularity of whiteboards increased rapidly in the mid-1990s and they have become a fixture in many offices, meeting rooms, school classrooms, and other work environments. The term whiteboard is also used metaphorically to refer to features of computer software applications that simulate whiteboards.

The first floor served as a school for handicapped students until 1960, when the school board sold the building to Rhea S. Plack, wife of Milton Plack of Squirrel Hill, who used it as storage for L & M Sales, his wholesale hardware and contracting supplies firm. In 1997, Milton Plack sold the building to Frontier Lofts of the South Side, which converted it to condominiums under the direction of Pittsburgh real-estate developer Joedda Sampson. Among eight units, several of which have loft space, all have features of the original classrooms, including hardwood flooring and lighting fixtures, and many retain original blackboards. The renovation is described in this 2002 Pittsburgh-Post Gazette newspaper article.

The themes of war, nuclear holocausts, environmental devastation, and human vulnerability have dominated much of Bonifacho's work, as noted in an article by social activist and author Christian Parenti in his comments about Bonifacho's 25-year retrospective show at Belgrade's Progress Gallery (Galerija Progres) in 2000.Parenti, "Art in the Enemy Camp; Letter from Bohemian Belgrade", p. 26 The first paintings to gain Bonifacho critical acclaim in Canada were the Blackboards series produced between 1978 and 1982.

Morrison was one of his professors during both his junior and senior years. “She had blackboards in her office,” he recalled during an interview after she had passed away on August 5, 2019, “and she would have these kind of looping, perfectly proportional, symmetrical letters, and she would write these gorgeous words.” Jarrett said that when he decided to pursue a graduate degree “[Morrison] agreed to write me a letter of recommendation. When all the lines have been filled with scores the top lines are erased and scores are again written from the top. The advantage of the blackboard type is that mistakes in adding and recording the score are easier to spot, because previous scores should always be seen. As well, it is easy to keep track of frames played using small numbers written down the scoreboard. (Note that in western USA and western Canada, scoreboards (blackboards) run from side-to-side, but the principle is the same.) Courts are available for use on residential decks or on any solid flat surface, in the form of roll-out plastic mats, or adjustable arrays of plastic tiles.

The German Classroom The German Classroom was designed by German-born architect Frank A. Linder to reflect the 16th century German Renaissance as exemplified in the Alte Aula (Great Hall) of the University of Heidelberg. The woodwork of the room was done by German-born Philadelphia decorator Gustav Ketterer and includes walnut paneling framing the blackboards, columns carved with arabesques flanking the two entrance doorways, and support broken-arch pediments surmounted by carved polychromed crests of the two oldest German universities: Heidelberg (1386) and Leipzig (1409). The doors are mounted with ornate wrought-iron hinges and locks, and their upper panels are decorated with intarsia depicting the central square of Nürnberg on the front door and the fountain of Rothenburg on the rear door. Carved in the architrave above the paneling are the names of famous philosophers, poets, musicians, artists, and scientists.

In 1840, Brickfields Free School held its last lessons and in September 1841, its pupils and staff moved to a new purpose-built premises at Saint Luke’s Cross. The new school, which had space for many more students was called St. Patrick's School and in a fundraising letter written at the time of opening the school manager, Rev. Patrick William Coffey, described the new building as having two floors, with the boys using the upper floor and entering the building from the Ballyhooly Road (just above where the pedestrian crossing is now) and the girls using the lower floor and entering from Alexandra Road. Coffey described the interior as having been kitted out with desks, blackboards, lockers, and two fireplaces. At the time of its opening Saint Patrick's School had 300 pupils on the books, 174 boys and 126 girls.

The Springfield Elementary School Math team is competing against Waverly Hills Elementary's Math team, in an event organized by Benjamin, Doug, and Gary. Lisa boasts that their poor school will surprise them all, which they do by scoring no points at all. Lisa is especially despondent, because Waverly Hills Elementary has way more funding than Springfield Elementary, and thus can afford the latest in technology, while Springfield Elementary is stuck using antiquated tools. After this educational embarrassment, the nerds decide to modernize Springfield Elementary School by cutting a massive check directly to Skinner (similar to Mark Zuckerberg's $100 million direct donations to the public schools of Newark, NJ) which enables each student to receive a tablet connected to a school network, replacing the blackboards with a giant touchscreen device and even building a 3D printing lab.

Three architectural firms had collaborated on the design of the building; Peabody & Stearns, Coolidge & Carlson and Maginnis, Walsh and Sullivan. The buildings were red brick with terra cotta and limestone trim and included all the latest advances in electricity and heating. Although the electric light bulb had been invented in 1879, new completely electric buildings were still somewhat of a novelty. For the first time, the school had working telephones with service provided by New England Telephone and Telegraph Company and other new “telephonic services” including switchboard, desk telephones, clocks and bells. Over the door leading to the courtyard were inscribed the words in Latin, “Here is an open field for talent; appreciative recognition is assured to the deserving; diligent application is honored with due rewards.” The average classroom was much smaller, and held approximately 56 desks. New features had been introduced like “battery blackboards” that provided more than one surface of natural slate and slid up and down like windows; wall maps and wall charts.

In 1905, the Missionary Society of the Church of England opened Moose Fort Boarding School. In 1906, it started to receive funding from the Canadian government to operate the school, at which point the school became part of the residential school system. Some non-status Cree children attended the school, but the Canadian government did not pay any of their costs. Initially, Cree parents wanted their children to go to school, because they wanted them to have access to education. Later, many came to see the school as harmful to their children, but didn't take them out because the Indian Act, as of 1920, required children to attend school until they turned 16, which the RCMP started to enforce in the 1930s. Starting in the 1950s, some Cree families began moving to Moose Factory so their children could attend day school instead of Horden Hall. In 1937, the Church built a new residential school planned to house 100 children, for which the federal government provided desks and blackboards. The buildings were officially occupied December 29 and included a two-storey annex.

By beginning of the 1990s the school had managed to certify their students with English as a second language providing Cambridge certification, provide an ubiquitously environmental education and to be the first school in Acapulco with a computerized multimedia hall. In the year of 1995 the school made an agreement with Lions Clubs International to buy their facilities and transform it from a social club into a school campus. The school has maintained the leadership in each of this matters, specially that of technological culture, being the first school in Acapulco in obtaining the service that allows the parents of our lower school students to see their children work in the classroom via Internet and being again the first school in Acapulco to have a technological partnership with Apple Inc. In 2008 the school designed new architectonic facilities to provide the students with the latest technological advances that go from interactive blackboards to promoting the use of laptops or iPad amongst the students instead of the traditional books and notebooks.
