At the beginning of the 20th century two stone, arched bridge forms were built on the river. During the war, the fascist invaders smashed them, but the foundations of the bridges remained. In the deep girder Temernichki in abundance grew black elder. In 1932-1933 the river behind the village was blocked and a deep lake was formed to the very bridge.

Sambucus nigra is a species complex of flowering plants in the family Adoxaceae native to most of Europe and North America. Common names include elder, elderberry, black elder, European elder, European elderberry, and European black elderberry. It grows in a variety of conditions including both wet and dry fertile soils, primarily in sunny locations. Elder is cited as a poisonous plant for mammals, and as a weed in certain habitats.

The park contains an exceptionally diverse flora, and has been considered the 'Botanical Garden of America'. Its high and low mountain-forest ecosystems, located in the Nudo de Sabanilla pass, and its very humid mountain and premontane forests in the basin of the Numbala River, have more than 4,000 species of plants including trees that can measure up to 40 meters, like the romerillo (Podocarpus glomeratus) which gives its name to the park, and many other valuable species like the Cinchona - the national tree of Ecuador - and a huge variety of orchids. Among the main species found in the region are chilca (Baccharis sp.), laurel, San Pedro cactus, uvilla, black elder, pumamaqui (Oreopanax sp.), sappanwood, arrayán, cashoco, alder, acacia, sage, guato blanco, cedar, castor-oil plant, walnut, yumbingue (Terminalia guyanensis) and canelón (Swartzia littlei).

It had been to the home of the Beckstead brothers' father, Alexander (an LDS leader in the Ontario region), that a violent mob once had pursued "the Negro preacher" with tar and feathers and a trumped-up accusation of a family's mass-murder, but Beckstead safely hid Abel away. Brother Beckstead later professed that he had triumphed in dispersing the mob by getting "his wife to shoot them" (Stevenson, 2013, p. 200). What seems most to have agitated Elijah's colleagues was Abel's presumption of his status within the church but also the confident, lofty views he seems to have espoused regarding his priesthood office and, especially, that he viewed himself — a black elder of the restored Church — as perhaps helping to create a "welding link" between the races, bringing them together in a "bond" of love and mutual understanding. Abel was correct in his view that the offices of elder, Seventy, and high priest within the church possess the "same authority," for they do — the Melchizedek Priesthood.
