She became involved in anti-slavery activities and, in 1847, met Henry Bibb, an escaped slave and abolitionist. She became Bibb's second wife in June the following year. After the Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1850, the Bibbs moved to Canada West, settling first in Sandwich and then in Windsor. The couple frequently took fugitives into their home who had arrived in Windsor via the Underground Railroad.
The strength of the Cougars' defense, however, was on the defensive line, particularly in stopping the run, which would be crucial against Colorado State's Kapri Bibbs. Key contributors on the line included sophomore Xavier Cooper, who led the defense with 13 TFL and 4.5 sacks, nose tackle Ioane Gauta, who recorded 41 tackles, 8 TFL, and 3 sacks, and Kalafitoni Pole, who recorded 26 tackles, 3 TFL, and 2 sacks.
While attending college, the switch hitter began his baseball career, playing with the Indianapolis ABCs and the Detroit Stars. His 1937 record with the Cincinnati Tigers—reportedly batting .404 that season—led to his selection to the West squad of the All-Star game. Elizabeth Brizentine-Taft also reported in The Indianapolis Recorder that Bibbs at one time played first base for the "Grays," presumably the Homestead Grays.

Voice of the Fugitive was Canada's first Black newspaper. Founded and edited by Henry Bibb and his wife Mary Bibb, it was first published in 1851 in Sandwich, and moved to Windsor shortly after. It was published until 1853, when on October 9, the office of the newspaper was mysteriously burned to the ground. The Bibbs tried to revive it, but Henry died suddenly in the summer of 1854 at the age of 39.
To keep the discovery a secret, they agree that all of them including Jim's man Cleve must join the search for the wagon train. The nine reach the apparent site but all the dunes have shifted since Johnny was there. Bibbs discovers an ox skull and Old Willy an oxen yoke and they begin digging. The group is joined by Chris Jackson, a woman who followed them from Calexico, where she works in a diner.
Bibbs attended Snow College in 2011 and Front Range Community College in 2012. Before the 2013 season, he transferred to Colorado State. In his only season with the school, he rushed for a school record 1,741 yards and joined Barry Sanders and Montee Ball as the only players in NCAA history to rush for 30 touchdowns in a season. His 2013 season garnered him among the leaders in various rushing categories in the Mountain West Conference.
On the ensuing drive for CSU, they went 75 yards down the field on 9 plays, ultimately scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run by Kapri Bibbs. They took advantage of a pass interference penalty on WSU when Roberts kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired, making the score 35–23 at the half.

In 1948 Edna Griffin along with her infant daughter Phyllis, John Bibbs, and Leonard Hudson sat at the lunch counter at Katz's and ordered ice cream. They were refused and told that the establishment “was not equipped to serve Negroes.” Katz's was convicted of violating the state's 1884 civil rights law, and their conviction was upheld by the Iowa Supreme Court in 1949. Griffin came to known as the "Iowa Rosa Parks", even though her act of civil disobedience predated Parks'.
On July 7, 1948, at 3:45 p.m., Edna Griffin, her infant daughter Phyllis, John Bibbs, and Leonard Hudson entered the Katz Drug Store in Des Moines, Iowa, and ordered ice cream at the lunch counter. The manager refused to serve them, saying, "It is the policy of our store that we don't serve colored." Outraged members of the community responded with sit-ins and picketing directed at Katz and other local lunch counters that refused to serve people because of race.

In 1851, they began publishing a newspaper called Voice of the Fugitive, the first major newspaper targeted at black Canadians. Mary and Henry Bibb were also part of the leadership of the Refugee Home Society, which helped former slaves settle in Canada, providing them with land and building schools and churches. Mary also taught school, educating both children and adults. In 1851, the Bibbs organized a North American Convention in Toronto on how free black Americans and Canadians should respond to the Fugitive Slave Act.
In 1849-50 he published his autobiography Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb, An American Slave, Written by Himself, which became one of the best known slave narratives of the antebellum years. The passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 increased the danger to Bibb and his second wife, Mary E. Miles. It required Northerners to cooperate in the capture of escaped slaves. To ensure their safety, the Bibbs migrated to Canada and settled in Sandwich, Upper Canada, now Windsor, Ontario.
The sculpture was commissioned by Joseph F. Miller, founder of the J. F. Miller Center. The dedication date is listed as March 1999. The Center on West Michigan Street used to house the Second Baptist Church, one of the city’s oldest African-American Baptist churches, until it moved in 2002. The building was renovated to house offices, as the Miller Center, which commissioned the sculpture. Bibbs drew inspiration from the Bible’s book of Ezekiel, from African-American heritage and from an African-American medical clinic located nearby.
Fite's husband, Thomas Lile "Tom" Fite, was the Republican legislative candidate in 2010 in the former District 83. His name was disqualified from the ballot by a judge in Pulaski County who declared that Fite's guilty plea in 1984 to Medicaid fraud constituted an "infamous crime." Democratic Representative Leslee Milam Post hence won that election by default. Tom Fite's name remained on the ballot, but votes for him were not counted. In the 2012 Republican primary in the new District 80, Fite defeated Terry Bibbs, 1,106 (54.2 percent) to 936 (45.8 percent).

On July 7, 1948, Edna Griffin, John Bibbs, Leonard Hudson and Griffin’s one-year-old daughter, Phyllis, were refused service at Katz Drug Store in downtown Des Moines because of racial discrimination. A waitress took their order for ice cream but after she was told not to serve them, she reported that they don’t serve colored people. Requesting to talk to the manager only confirmed the denial of service at that establishment. Griffin launched a campaign to force Katz to serve African Americans by leading boycotts, sit-ins and pickets.

The focal point of the Rams' offense was sophomore junior college-transfer running back Kapri Bibbs, who was "one of the most underappreciated offensive threats in the country". He totaled 254 rushes (tied for 13th in FBS), 1572 rushing yards (eighth in FBS), and 28 touchdowns (second in FBS). Not surprisingly, he was a first team all-conference selection.

Upon receiving the opening kickoff, CSU promptly went three-and-out, giving the ball back to WSU, who started their drive in CSU territory after a 23-yard punt. WSU entered the red zone, but ultimately settled for an Andrew Furney field goal to take the lead by 15 (38–23). CSU's ensuing drive lasted only one play – a 75-yard touchdown run by Kapri Bibbs that made the score 38–30, with Washington State retaining the eight-point advantage. Though they reached the red zone on their next drive, Cory James sacked Halliday twice, and then WSU committed a delay of game penalty, which ultimately moved them out of field goal range, so they had to punt.
They executed two running plays, after both of which Colorado State burned timeouts to conserve time, and then converted a first down. On the next play, Halliday faked handing the ball off, and ran himself; he was hit at the line of scrimmage and appeared to fumble the ball (CSU would have recovered), but video review overturned the call on the field, and WSU retained possession. On the very next play, however, Jeremiah Laufasa rushed the ball, and CSU's Shaquil Barrett forced and recovered a fumble at the WSU 31-yard line, giving CSU the ball with 1:51 to play. CSU ran eight plays on their subsequent drive, en route to a 1-yard touchdown run by Kapri Bibbs.
