Balzer, Shamanism, 12–21 The use of purification by fire is an important element of the shamanic tradition dating back as early as the 6th century. Two Fires is the fourth studio album by the Australian rock singer Jimmy Barnes, and his first United States release for Atlantic Records. It was released in Australia by Mushroom Records and was his fifth consecutive No. 1 album, peaking on release in September 1990 and remaining at the position for four weeks. On 16 June 1991, Two Fires again reached #1, making it the only Barnes album to achieve such a feat. The title track, "Between Two Fires", was co-written with the hit songwriter, Holly Knight.

"Wonderland", written by Betsy Cook who also provided backing vocals on the album, reached #24 in the UK (Cook would later release her own version of the song on her 1992 album The Girl Who Ate Herself). "Some People" reached #56 in the UK and #65 in the U.S., while "Why Does a Man have to be Strong" reached #63 in the UK. After the numerous covers contained in the previous two works, Between Two Fires contained many more self-penned compositions, and Young actually co-produced, co-wrote and co- arranged most of the tracks.

He poroposed that, when the fleet was to windward, the centre should break through the enemy centre. In the process of breaking through, the enemy's centre ships immediately astern of the break would be forced away to leeward, so disorganising the enemy rear and isolating it. Meanwhile, the enemy van would have no choice but to stand on to avoid being put between two fires, and it would thus become completely separated from the remainder of the fleet. Exactly the same movement might be executed from leeward, though in that case the enemy's rear would be forced to give way to windward, thus exposing itself to the fire of the centre and rear ships of the attacking fleet.

It was then that the reserve of the attacking forces were able to position themselves between Kurski's troops and the river ford which had until then protected their rear, cutting off any possible retreat. David Clay Large, Between Two Fires: Europe's Path in the 1930s (1991) FAI milicia during Spanish Social Revolution The Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) was marked by numerous small battles and sieges, and many atrocities, until the rebels (the Nationalists), led by Francisco Franco, won in 1939. There was military intervention as Italy sent land forces, and Germany sent smaller elite air force and armoured units to the Nationalists. The Soviet Union sold armaments to the leftist Republicans on the other side, while the Communist parties in numerous countries sent soldiers to the "International Brigades." The civil war did not escalate into a larger conflict, but did become a worldwide ideological battleground that pitted the left, the communist movement and many liberals against Catholics, conservatives, and fascists.

At the mosque called the Ashrafia they separated, one party proceeding to the Al-Azhar Mosque and the houses of certain sheiks, and the other continuing along the main street and through the gate called Bab Zuweyla, where they turned up towards the Cairo citadel. Baker returned home in late 1807 and joined the under Captain William Roberts, then under Captain Rowley again, and under George Sayer. In August 1809, he took charge of a gun-boat, and was particularly mentioned by Sir George Cockburn for his part at the bombardment of Vlissingen during the Walcheren Campaign. On 15 August 1810, he assumed command of a 10-gun schooner named Anholt, and served as second in command under Captain James Wilkes Maurice at the defence of Anholt, in March 1811 when that island was attacked by a Danish force at least four times larger than the British garrison. Baker in Anholt played a major part in the defeat of the enemy by bearing down along the northern shore of the island, and placing them between two fires. This was acknowledged, on his arrival in England with despatches, by promotion to the rank of commander dated 8 April 1811. On 28 October 1812 Baker was appointed to command of the brig , and on 18 March 1814 to the brig-sloop , both on the North America Station.

After working for the piano-drums duet of the title track of Igloo, Anzovino and Franz Di Cioccio consolidated their relationship into the project of a live set: Di Cioccio on drums and Anzovino on piano, one against another, to represent the clash between two fires, and the meeting of two generations of musicians and two worlds. In the Mayangna language, ‘autonomy’ translates as “alas yalahnin lani” – ‘to live our system of life.” However, the current autonomous political system falls far short of this ideal in the eyes of the Mayanga, who feel that despite countless sacrifices they are still caught between two fires; with the advancing ‘agricultural frontier’ of mestizo peasants, who invade their communal lands and despoil their forests, on the one side, and on the other, once again, the Miskitu leaders, who ignore their distinct problems as a people and yet still portray themselves as representatives of all of the ‘Indians’ of the Coast, depriving the Mayangna of the chance to ever make themselves heard. The Mayangna look to the Sandinista-run central government as their only ally, and hope that the gradual progress of territorial demarcation and the titling of lands that has taken place under the Ortega government will eventually usher in a real autonomy for the Mayangna. In 2001 the Mayagna of the small community of Awas Tingni (then 1100 people) won an important ruling from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, established in 1979 by agreement among the signatories of the Organization of American States (OAS).
