The Ivor Novello Awards – Nominees Dropped by EMI despite the Ivor Novello nomination and worldwide success of Beta Male Fairytales, the band formed their own label and recorded their second studio album in Autumn 2008. The first single from the album, "Apologise", was released in early 2009 and was co-written with Natalie Imbruglia (who recorded a version for her forthcoming album). The band was then signed to Island Records for the forthcoming singles from the album Battling Giants, which contains a duet with Anastacia, "Stalemate", and other vocal collaborations including Jason Mraz on the title track and Jack MacManus, Cass Lowe and Pete Gordeno doing group harmonies on the other tracks. On 15 February 2010, Hartman announced via his Twitter page that the band would continue to release music without the support of the label Island Records.

The third song, "Beta Male Strategies", is a pop rap-oriented noise rap song with "manipulated vocal sample, hand claps, rave-ready drums, and a smidge of guitar" which confronts and pokes fun at the alt-right and internet trolls. The instrumental "JPEGMafia Type Beat" is an Atari Teenage Riot homage, which critics interpreted as ridiculing "type beats" in contemporary hip hop production and his comparisons to Blackie and, more frequently, Death Grips. "Grimy Waifu" is a mellow guitar-backed singer-songwriter downtempo ode to a gun disguised as a love song, inspired by his time spent in the military; it is followed by "PTSD", an anxious song backed by murky synths and breakbeats "channeling his military past". "Rap Grow Old & Die x No Child Left Behind" references Bobby Brown and Michael Jackson to mock whitewashing in the music industry, where he also sings about "the unfair cycle of society".

To promote the reissue, the line-up of Dando, Ruhtenberg and Ashley performed the album in full at a number gigs between March and May 2008. Later in 2008 the band toured again in Europe with Vess Ruhtenberg and P. David Hazel (drums) of Beta Male. On April 23, 2008, at the inaugural NME US Awards ceremony at the El Rey in Los Angeles, Dando received the classic album award for It's A Shame About Ray, and also performed "My Drug Buddy" and the album's title track acoustically.

In 2009 the Lemonheads released Varshons, a collection of 11 covers, including tracks originally recorded by Gram Parsons, Wire, GG Allin, Christina Aguilera; the album featured vocal performances by actress Liv Tyler and model Kate Moss. For many of the tours since 2010, The Lemonheads have included the entire It's a Shame About Ray album on the setlist.
