The event attracted some of the best bred fillies on the East Coast of the United States with several future Champions winning the race including Hall of Fame inductees Affectionately and Ruffian. The Fashion Stakes was placed on hiatus after the 1984 edition and was not run again until being revived on June 3, 1999.

Pope was bought in 1812 for 1,000 guineas by Lord Lonsdale for the Marquess of Sligo and was relocated to Ireland for use as a racehorse. Lord Lonsdale wrote to the Marquess that "he [had] sent him the best bred horse in the world save one," with the exception being Swordsman. The other Pope (sired by Shuttle) was sold to a Mr. Browne and was also relocated to Ireland. Pope (renamed Waxy) debuted at the Curragh Meeting on 7 September in a 200-guinea sweepstakes race, finishing second to Pope by Shuttle.

She was the most important soprano of her age.Queens of Song, Ellen Creathorn Clayton, 94-109 A woman of great personal charm and dynamism, Charles Burney referred to her as "the most intelligent and best-bred virtuosa" that he had ever encountered. The excellence of her vocal artistry is reflected in the fact that she was able to secure long-term engagements in three of the most prestigious operatic centers in her day outside of Italy (Vienna, St. Petersburg, and London).

Evans was a supporter of economic planning who was very conscious of his origins in the industrial midlands of England; in a debate in February 1946 he declared to laughter and cheers that "the elbow grease would be forthcoming from those who had always saved Britain – the common people, the best bred mongrels in the world"."Parliament", The Times, 1 March 1946, p. 8. He distrusted the Soviet Union for its "constant stream of vilification, invective and abuse" directed at the British people,"Parliament", The Times, 24 October 1946, p. 8. and in June 1947 made an outspoken attack on Soviet domination of Europe led by the "hermits of the Kremlin".

Competing in the "Sport of Kings" was difficult it was dominated by the extremely wealthy who could afford to spend vast sums to purchase the best-bred horses. He used his skills to make a living training horses for others plus his knowledge of horses to buy young unraced Thoroughbreds for himself at a price he could afford. Once he developed a young horse into a top runner, he could sell it at a substantial price both as a racer and for its eventual stallion or broodmare value. Profits from the sale of a top racehorse would go to expanding his racing and breeding operation by acquiring new young bloodstock.

Photos of civil war carvings on a huge old tree found on the property are featured in Mary Garry and Irma Raque's upcoming area history book. Nancy Bray's sister, Evalina Bray, married Dr. Samuel Shipp, and inherited the property in 1865, to raise their family here until selling it to neighbor Milton Smith, President of the L&N; Railroad, and wife, Annette in 1885. In 1888, the Smiths sold the farm to George Scoggan in whose family it remained until 1977. George produced many Derby contenders including the famous first winner of the Futurity in 1888, Proctor Knott, the 2:1 Derby favorite of 1889... "the best bred horse in America".

Like her third husband she seems to have been proud, although Lord Dartmouth called her "the best bred as well as the best born person in England".Gregg She showed great skill in dealing with the Queen, her secret, it was said, being never to press the Queen to do anything for her, in contrast to Abigail Masham who constantly asked for favours. She was known as a shrewd observer of Court life and a notorious gossip; even the Queen, who was fond of her, called her "one of the most observing, prying ladies in England".

In the fall of 1971, two-year-old Bee Bee Bee was competing at Timonium Racetrack, a half-mile track far from the limelight that shone on the best-bred stars at top tracks along the Eastern seaboard. After winter racing in Florida, the colt was brought back to Maryland by his new owner where he won two minor races at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore Although nominated for the U.S. Triple Crown series, trainer Del Carroll chose not to run Bee Bee Bee in the Kentucky Derby. However, an impressive seven- length win in the April 29, 1972 Survivor Stakes at 1⅛ miles on the Pimlico track convinced him to enter the colt in the May 20 Preakness Stakes. Bee Bee Bee was confronting Kentucky Derby winner Riva Ridge and standouts Key to the Mint and No Le Hace.

As well as breeding horses and introducing improved machinery, the earl was keen to continue using draught-oxen when they were going out of favour elsewhere. Young records that by experiment traditional wooden yokes were found to be superior to horse-style collars. John Ellman, writing in The History, Antiquities and Topography of the County of Sussex by Thomas Walker Horsfield (1835), writes of Wyndham: > Horses—This county must not boast of their breed. The Earl of Egremont, with > a spirit of liberality which pervades all his actions, gives to farmers, in > the neighbourhood of Petworth, the opportunity of breeding from his valuable > stud; his lordship also affords the eastern part of the county the same > opportunity, by giving the use of one of his best bred horses to Mr. Brown, > the venerable training groom at Lewes; his lordship also gives annual > premiums to the breeders of the best colts, shewn at Egdean fair, near > Petworth.
