Beggarman, Thief is a 1977 novel written by Irwin Shaw. It was a sequel to his 1970 bestseller Rich Man, Poor Man. The miniseries adapted from the original novel had a 1976-77 sequel entitled Rich Man, Poor Man Book II, broadcast prior to the publication of Beggarman, Thief and was not based on the second novel. A television adaptation of Beggarman, Thief followed in 1979, and starred Jean Simmons, Glenn Ford, Lynn Redgrave, Andrew Stevens, Tovah Feldshuh and Bo Hopkins.

"Short a Couple a' Bob" is reminiscent of the Beggarman in that it is catchy, quick and, tells the tale of a poor, but happy soul. The band's second foray into the Irish language is about An Cailin Deas Rua (the beautiful red-haired girl). The instruments featured are beautifully played and the lyrics, while telling about an unappreciative girlfriend, are extremely catchy.

The album contained the first recording of "Lament for Brendan Behan," a recently composed tribute to the late Irish author, Brendan Behan, whom the Clancys had personally known. Tommy Makem wrote "The Curlew's Song" for the album. Two more songs, "Butcher Boy" and "Beggar Man" (a.k.a. "The Little Beggarman"), Makem learned from his mother, Sarah, a source singer for folk song collectors.

Dwiggins' love of wood carving led to his creation of a marionette theatre in a garage at 5 Irving Street, which was behind his home at 30 Leavitt Street in Hingham, Massachusetts. He also created a puppet group named the Püterschein Authority. In 1933 he performed his first show there, "The Mystery of the Blind Beggarman." Dwiggins built his second theatre under his studio at 45 Irving Street.

At Home with the Dubliners is the first album that The Dubliners made with producers Bill Martin and Phil Coulter. Their contract with Major Minor had ended at this point and they signed with EMI-Columbia Records. Some rare pressings feature the tracks "Bold Princess Royal" and "The Beggarman". The former can only be heard on YouTube, while the latter is available on the box set Best of the Original Dubliners.

Control, chief of the Circus, suspects one of the five senior intelligence officers at the Circus to be a long-standing Soviet mole and assigns code names with the intention that should his agent Jim Prideaux uncover information about the identity of the mole, Prideaux can relay it back to the Circus using a simple, easy-to-recall codename. As the news sent Control into a catatonic state the duty officer called Smiley's home and left a message with Smiley's wife. Bill Haydon arrived soon after and cleaned out everything related to Prideaux's assignment. Smiley guesses that Haydon was at Smiley's house with Ann, with whom he was having an affair. Smiley visits Prideaux who says his Budapest mission was to relay the identity of the mole to Control via a code name: Tinker for Alleline, Tailor for Haydon, Soldier for Bland, Poorman for Esterhase, and Beggarman for Smiley.

His greatest success came in the 1837 Derby on Phosphorus, who, because he had been lame prior to the race, started a 40/1 outsider. Edwards also won the 1839 1,000 Guineas on Cara, emulating his brother Edward's success from the previous year. After retiring from riding, stud manager to the Duke of Orleans Count Cambis appointed him to train the Duke's horses. At a Goodwood stable sale, he bought a horse called Beggarman for £500 and trained him up for the Duke to win the 1840 Goodwood Cup.

Upon completing the recording of their first album, the band's Live agent sent a copy to Jalapeno Records, who offered the band a deal within an hour of listening to it. In the 1970s Sterling was a vice president and the spokesman for a company that implemented the software for one of the first supermarket barcoding and computer inventory systems. Benny the Dip was a dark brown (officially "bay or brown") colt with a white star, bred in the United States by Landon Knight who raced the colt in his own colours until August 1997 when he sold a share in the colt to Claiborne Farm. The colt was sired by Silver Hawk out of the mare Rascal Rascal. Silver Hawk was an American-bred son of Roberto who raced successfully in the United Kingdom before moving back to the United States where he became a "very good" stallion, siring good winners such as the St Leger winner Mutafaweq, the Arc de Triomphe runner-up Mubtaker and the leading American turf runner Hawkster. Rascal Rascal produced several other winners including Cryptic Rascal (Palm Beach Stakes) and Beggarman Thief (Horris Hill Stakes).

He was among those who signed a petition asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review the John Howard Lawson and Dalton Trumbo convictions for contempt of Congress, resulting from hearings by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Accused of being a communist by the Red Channels publication, Shaw was placed on the Hollywood blacklist by the movie studio bosses. In 1951 he left the United States and went to Europe, where he lived for 25 years, mostly in Paris and Switzerland. He later claimed that the blacklist "only glancingly bruised" his career. During the 1950s he wrote several more screenplays, including Desire Under the Elms (based on Eugene O'Neill's play) and Fire Down Below (about a tramp boat in the Caribbean). While living in Europe, Shaw wrote more bestselling books, notably Lucy Crown (1956), Two Weeks in Another Town (1960), Rich Man, Poor Man (1970) (for which he would later write a less successful sequel entitled Beggarman, Thief) and Evening in ByzantiumEVENING IN BYZANTIUM Kirkus Review.
