She comes from a large Capetonian family with a mother of Jewish stock and a father of Portuguese descent. Her family were very musical and Natalia excelled in school becoming Student of the Year in her Standard 10 (1974), then equivalent to Grade 12 today.

The son of a Swedish immigrant, Richard Vinroot was raised in Mecklenburg County schools becoming student body president at East Mecklenburg High School. Vinroot became a high school athlete in three sports and captained the basketball and football teams. Vinroot won a Morehead Scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a bachelor's degree and a law degree in 1963 and 1966, respectively. He served as class president in his junior and senior years.

Takemoto began her education at the Hāmākua Poko Grammar School when she was four and then transferred in 4th grade to the Kaunoa English Standard School a mostly-white school attended only by students who could speak English and pass the entrance examination. She felt isolated and found the atmosphere unfriendly. She entered Maui High School one year before Honolulu was attacked by Japan. Despite the local Japanese being treated as if they were enemies, Takemoto ran for and won her first election, becoming student body president in her senior year.

For the 2009/2010 academic year the Student Direct began to split into its component parts, with the Manchester edition becoming "Student Direct: Mancunion edition". By the 2010/2011 academic year they had fully transitioned to The Mancunion and The Salfordian, the student newspaper of the University of Salford Students' Union. The Mancunion drew national attention in 2013 when a secret recording was made during a society meeting, at which it was suggested that the Islamist speaker supported the execution of homosexuals in Britain. The controversy that arose regarded both the sensitive content of what was said, as well as the ethical questions behind such investigative reporting methods.

Due to uncertainty and despair, Shu replaces Arisa Kuhouin as the student council president after regaining control of a chaotic school assembly. After becoming student council president, he rules the school with dignity and respect and refuses Yahiro's suggestion to implement a Void- ranking system which determines how much vaccine and care someone receives, believing that it will lead to discrimination between the students. However, when Hare is killed during an attempt by Souta to find vaccines from a nearby hospital, Shu falls into despair and implements the ranking system. After the successful take down of the Tokyo Tower and the Ghost Team, Shu was betrayed by Arisa Kuhouin and his fellow students.

Neptune High also had a policy of "Pirate Points", where students who were involved in certain activities, like sports, student council, and cheerleading, were allowed extra privileges (like getting to have food delivered on-campus). Duncan Kane, upon becoming student council president, restructured the Pirates Points system to allow those in band, the school newspaper, school plays, on the honor roll, or those in vocational trades receive points as well ("Return of the Kane").

An English translation of Freezing is currently being published in 2-in-1 omnibus editions, starting with Volumes 1-2 by Seven Seas Entertainment in June 2015. The manga is put on hiatus due to circumstances regarding the authors. A spinoff manga, called , illustrated by Jae-Ho Yoon (the illustrator of Lim's light novel-based manhwa The Phantom King), began serialization in the November 2011 issue of Comic Valkyrie (released on September 27, 2011), and ran four chapters until the March 2011 issue (released January 27, 2012). A prequel to the original series, the story centers on Chiffon Fairchild and Ticy Phenyl's first year at West Genetics prior to them becoming Student Council President and Vice President, and also explains the origin of Chiffon's title, "The Unmatched Smiling Monster".
