A large rostrum or "saw" from a largetooth sawfish with several teeth missing (black marks on ruler are apart) As suggested by the alternative name common sawfish, it was once plentiful, but has now declined drastically leading to it being considered a critically endangered species by the IUCN. The main threat is overfishing, but it also suffers from habitat loss. Both their fins (used in shark fin soup) and "saw" (as novelty items) are highly valuable, and the meat is used as food. Because of the "saw" they are particularly prone to becoming entangled in fishing nets.

Dolphin Tale is a 2011 American 3D family drama film directed by Charles Martin Smith, from a screenplay by Karen Janszen and Noam Dromi and a book of the same name. The book and film are inspired by the true story of Winter, a bottlenose dolphin that was rescued in December 2005 off the Florida coast and taken in by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Winter lost her tail after becoming entangled with a rope attached to a crab trap, and was fitted with a prosthetic one.

The plot deals with Mahiru Shiraishi, a young woman with the ability to grant others good fortune by touching them. In June 1795, Dido was ordered, with HMS Lowestoffe, to detach from the fleet off Menorca and search for the French Mediterranean Fleet near Toulon. On 24 June 1795, at roughly the midpoint between Menorca and Toulon, Towry encountered a French squadron of two frigates on an identical mission from the French commander Contre- amiral Pierre Martin. The squadrons engaged, Dido narrowly avoiding being crushed during a ramming attempt by Minerve and becoming entangled in the French ship's rigging.

In physics, the no-cloning theorem states that it is impossible to create an independent and identical copy of an arbitrary unknown quantum state, a statement which has profound implications in the field of quantum computing among others. The theorem is an evolution of the 1970 no-go theorem authored by James Park, in which he demonstrates that a non-disturbing measurement scheme which is both simple and perfect cannot exist (the same result would be independently derived in 1982 by Wootters and Zurek as well as Dieks the same year). One should note that the aforementioned theorems do not preclude the state of one system becoming entangled with the state of another as cloning specifically refers to the creation of a separable state with identical factors.
