The Treaty of Utrecht (1713) had regulated Anglo- French commercial relations prior to the Eden Treaty. The reciprocal trading rights stipulated in the treaty never became operative however, because Great Britain refused to ratify the crucial Articles 8 and 9 of the agreement, and in the wake of the British refusal the French quickly returned to their historic prohibitive policies. It was dreaded among airliner pilots for its runway, which was not only short (the largest planes that could be accommodated were the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737) but was also built on a high embankment which fell away abruptly towards the sea. It often experienced updrafts which tended to lift landing aircraft in an unpredictable fashion. In an accident on November 19, 1977 that killed over 150 people, TAP Portugal Flight 425, landing in unfavorable weather, overshot the runway and dropped off the cliff.

On December 31, 2005, the "Perchlorate Best Management Practices" were adopted and became operative on July 1, 2006. In early 2006, EPA issued a "Cleanup Guidance" and recommended a Drinking Water Equivalent Level (DWEL) for perchlorate of 24.5 µg/L. Both DWEL and Cleanup Guidance were based on a 2005 review of the existing research by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Lacking a federal drinking water standard, several states subsequently published their own standards for perchlorate including Massachusetts in 2006 and California in 2007.

Massachusetts would ratify the Constitution with recommended provisions in the ratifying instrument that the Constitution be amended with a bill of rights. (The Federalists contended that a conditional ratification would be void, so the recommendation was the strongest support that the ratifying convention could give to a bill of rights short of rejecting the Constitution.) Four of the next five states to ratify, including New Hampshire, Virginia, and New York, included similar language in their ratification instruments. As a result, once the Constitution became operative in 1789, Congress sent a set of twelve amendments to the states. Ten of these amendments were immediately ratified and became known as the Bill of Rights, with one of the other two becoming the 27th Amendment—almost 200 years later.

The station was originally proposed to be named Øyslebø, the name of the municipality at the time. Instead a new name was constructed by folklorist Knut Liestøl. He took the name of the river, Mandalselva, used its genitive form marnar and added suffix dal which means "valley". The name was so quickly adopted by the locals that it was used as the name of the new municipality in the municipal amalgamation that occurred in 1964. The station in 2009, before the platform upgrades Work on the line started in 1930 and by 1934 work had reached Marnardal. During the following years the population increased with 300 due to the influx of workforce for the railway. The station building was completed in 1942 after designs by NSB Arkitektkontor. It was originally proposed to be named Øyslebø, but this was changed to Marnardal. Irregular revenue traffic commenced on the line on 17 December 1943 and the station became operative from the same day.
