The Old Sartell Bridge is a bridge that spans the Mississippi River in the city of Sartell in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Though still standing, it is closed to traffic and was replaced by the Sartell Bridge constructed about 850 feet downstream. The bridge is around 1000 feet downstream of the Sartell Dam. The bridge was built during a six-month period in 1914, but over the years the bridge became congested and less able to carry heavy traffic.

On March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747 passenger jets, operating KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736, collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport) on the Spanish island of Tenerife. Resulting in 583 fatalities, this accident is the deadliest in aviation history. A terrorist incident at Gran Canaria Airport had caused many flights to be diverted to Los Rodeos, including the two aircraft involved in the accident. The airport quickly became congested with parked airplanes blocking the only taxiway and forcing departing aircraft to taxi on the runway instead.

As URR struggled to rebuild after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, a shortage of motor cars resulted from conversion of former cable car lines to electric power. The Philadelphia and Western Railroad had ordered twelve motor cars from the Saint Louis Car Company; but these cars were sold to URR when the original purchaser couldn't pay for them. These cars were promptly put into service on the San Mateo line where they became known as the Big Subs. Their size became a problem as the streets they used became congested with automobiles, and they required too much power on hills.

The canal was completed in August 1789. In the 19th century the street had the "by-wash" running through its centre, an open sewer that ran from the Rideau Canal to the Rideau River. The by-wash was removed and replaced with a tree lined boulevard, making King Edward one of Ottawa's prettiest streets in the early 20th century. With the construction of the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge and the Queensway, however, the street became congested with large commercial vehicles and quickly became dirty and dangerous. In 2013, the National Capital Commission recommended that a new bridge be built serving as a new truck route for access to Gatineau.

With intensive building in southern areas of (the then) Leningrad in the 1950s, Ligovsky Avenue and the roads around Obvodny Canal Quay became congested. The 14 metre-wide ‘Erakov’ bridge--built in 1848--was too narrow to cope with the volume of traffic using it and, thus, a decision was taken to substantially widen the bridge. The current bridge was designed by architect L. A. Noskov and was constructed between 1968 and 1970, developed by engineers N. P. Agapov and A. D. Guttsajt. The ‘Guttsajt’ bridge was substantially wider than its predecessor--at just under 45 metres in width-- and was opened to public use on November 7, 1970.

The freeway as initially built had eight lanes (four in each direction) between downtown and I-610, six to Farm to Market Road 1960, and four north of FM 1960. Southbound I-45 entering downtown Houston Like the Gulf Freeway, the North Freeway soon became congested. The oil boom of the 1970s resulted in large-scale residential development along the highway, most notably The Woodlands. Since the corridor was strongly directional, with 65% of peak-hour traffic going in the peak direction, a contraflow lane for buses and other high-occupancy vehicles (HOV) was implemented later that decade, opening on August 28, 1979 between downtown and Shepherd Drive (exit 56B).

Despite being called a motorway (), it was a single carriageway, two- lane road with all of its intersections at-grade. Due to a shortage of construction material, the wearing course was executed in various materials-- mostly concrete slabs, with some asphalt concrete sections and even some cobblestone-covered sections. The road was originally designed to carry approximately 9,000 vehicles per day, and the original construction plans provided for subsequent conversion of the road into a four-lane motorway. In 1971, as the road gradually became congested, the plans to build the motorway on the route were approved by the Parliament of the Socialist Republic of Croatia.

The joint airport proposal was revisited in 1961 after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) refused to invest more money in separate Dallas and Fort Worth airports. Although the Fort Worth airport was eventually abandoned, Dallas Love Field became congested and had no more room to expand. Following an order from the federal government in 1964 that it would unilaterally choose a site if the cities could not come to an agreement, officials from the two cities finally agreed on a location for a new regional airport that was north of the abandoned GSW and almost equidistant from the two city centers. The land was purchased by the cities in 1966 and construction began in 1969.
