He undertook studies in pharmaceuticals, an area in which he became competent. In 1809 he developed the foundations of a fluid magnesia, which contained a base ingredient of magnesium sulfate. He modified it for it to act as an aid for "weak nerves", low fever, spasms, cholera, and diarrhoea. He named his recipe Fluid Magnesia, and set up the company Sir James Murray & Son to successfully market it.

Matidia became competent in her affairs and when her sister became empress, she would often travel with her and her brother-in-law. Matidia underwrote the restoration of the theatre of Sessa Aurunca which was probably damaged by an earthquake during the rule of Emperor Antoninus Pius (138-161). Her generosity was commemorated with a statue here. Matidia lived to an advanced age and outlived most of her relatives.

Victoria Mallory also became competent in tai chi chuan, and served as a model in the many martial arts photographs in a book by Marshall Ho'o, who wrote of her: "I also wish to express my gratitude to Victoria Mallory who appears with me in the photos of this book. She learnt her midwifery skills from her grandmother, Marigemma, a midwife who also helped to deliver five of Narasamma's own babies. In 1940, at the age of 20, Narasamma assisted at her first birth when she helped with the delivery of her aunt's baby. Narasamma had the opportunity to keep practice her midwifery skills whenever nomadic tribes arrived at her village. She also learned the art of preparing natural medicine for pregnant women and soon became competent in checking the health and position of the baby.

Carter studied at the progressive Bedales School (where he was a friend of John Rothenstein), and at Queen's College, Oxford "where he became competent in French, German, Spanish, and Russian". (He would later learn Arabic, and design a Hebrew font.) Though he was studying law, Carter became interested in typography and bought a printing press. His first work with type came in 1928 and 1929 as an apprentice at the Monotype Corporation. At this time he formed friendships with Jan van Krimpen, Stanley Morison, Francis Meynell, and Oliver and Herbert Simon (cousins of his school-friend, John Rothenstein).

In the early days, the animation was very basic, originally viewers had to click on the character's speech bubble each time they said something. The two learned to use layers effectively, insert sound, motion tweens, morphing and became competent in using Macromedia Flash. After going to Canberra for their grade six camp, they included photos of the War Memorial and Parliament House and then included John Howard (Who had the letters "PM" on his head which, of course, stands for "Prime Minister"), Simon Crean and Ian Thorpe into the animation. The 20 Cent Quest has been shown on local Geelong television, The National Film and Sound Archive, in Canberra and many other places.
