When a man named Cliff's car breaks down, he is towed into the nearest town by a female motorist. It turns out the woman is named Bonnie, and she is the owner of a soon-to-be-opening beauty parlor that has riled up the town. When she bleaches her hair to stimulate business, a local women's group comes to protest, but she orders them out. But then Cliff's wealthy mother brings Bonnie to a yacht party as her guest of honor, and the local women change their tune and decide to patronize her business; soon she pays off her mortgage and is proposed to by Cliff.

Raimundi-Ortiz's early work often examined pop, hip-hop and comic culture, depicting famous people (like Celia Cruz) or her own epic characters (like Wepa Woman and Chuleta) in mural form. But her most notable work is multi- disciplinary or performance-based such as RicanStruction that was featured in Performa '05 Biennial creating a pop-up stereotypically Nuyorican beauty parlor. Another of her more interactive performance works was featured in "The Post Millennial Black Madonna," an exhibition at Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts in 2007. Meanwhile, as the murders in the barrio continue to persist, Remington tells his mother about his dream and tries helping her by identifying available suspects. Concerned, his mother asks if he might be closet gay, to which Remington adamantly denies. His mother berates him for not wanting to go to Manila for college and asks what he truly wants in his life, to which he doesn't reply. Later that night, as another gay man gets murdered inside a beauty parlor, Remington dreamt of mistakenly boarding a tricycle thought to be Jigs', only to discover that the driver was the same strange man who attacked him in his first dream.

Danielle, a rich, elderly woman, accompanied by her nephew, Luke, goes to a beauty parlor to get her hair done. While she is there, she begins to struggle breathing, due to two-thirds of her lungs being missing. When Danielle's beauty girl, Kassia Lancaster, sees this, she calls Danielle's other nephew, Wylie, who is with a girl when she comes to pick him up. Kassia takes Wylie to her parlor and explains that after she saw Danielle, or Danny as Wylie calls her, collapse, she got the idea to kill Aunt Danny by shutting off the oxygen supply in the oxygen tent she uses every night.

The 1873 Morrison Hotel housed the Boston Oyster House in its basement. In the skyscraper hotel, the Terrace Casino opened in 1936 with a performance by Sophie Tucker and was an important Big Band venue; the Carousel in the Sky was the world's highest nightclub; the Jockey Club on the first floor was the site of protests by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that forced removal of its black jockey statues. Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy and Vice-Presidents Barkley and Nixon stayed at the hotel; boxer Jack Dempsey was also a frequent guest. Gorgeous George was a daily client of the beauty parlor.

Bernard Kuehn mugshot, 1941 Bernard Julius Otto Kuehn (sometimes referred to as Kuhn) and his family were spies in the employ of the Abwehr for Nazi Germany who had close ties to Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. In 1935, Goebbels offered Kuehn a job working for Japanese intelligence in Hawaii; he accepted and moved his family to Honolulu on August 15, 1935. The family included Dr. Kuhn, 41 years old; his wife, Friedel; a daughter, Susie Ruth (at 17, she was the former mistress of Goebbels); and her two half-brothers, Hans Joachim, and Eberhard. His daughter dated U.S. military personnel and opened a beauty parlor that offered the best and cheapest services in the city.

The most socially positive professions are gynecologist and sexual pathologist.

Early tenants of the building included W. E. Pierce & Co., Pierce-Hopper Insurance Agency, Boise Title & Trust Co., Senator William Borah, United States Forest Service, Joy Drug Store, Ada County Attorney, Wayland & Fennell, Margaret Giles beauty parlor, and the chairman of the local Republican Party. Later, the Democratic Central Committee leased offices in the building. In 1969 the Idaho Building was considered for demolition along with other buildings in a 60-block area of Boise's historic core when a developer designed a large, outdoor shopping mall as part of a plan for urban renewal. In 1970 the outdoor mall plan was adjusted to spare the Idaho Building, but in 1976 the building was again slated for destruction.

Other active businesses in Rosemark in the early decades of the 20th century included a blacksmith shop and a beauty parlor. A doctor set up a medical office in the community in 1896 and maintained his practice there until 1946. As of the early 21st century, Rosemark is part of suburban Memphis, but retains the characteristics of an intact rural community. By 1919 they started to buy land at 3rd and E to build a new, larger store, which launched on November 7, 1927, with three floors plus a mezzanine, basement and roof garden. There was a tea room, lunch counter, beauty parlor, barber shop, sit-down soda fountain, candies, stationery, grocery store called Sage's Market, and a restaurant, Café Madrid. The main entrance archway fitted with Italian marble rose 29 feet, while the interior lobby ceiling was an impressive 32 feet high; the doors were made of hammered copper. The outside face of the building had alternating intricate stone and wrought iron ornamental grillwork, with the Harris coat-of-arms molded into the stonework.

Not long after his final release, Wimberly embarked on a crime spree in Oakland, beginning with the November 8th rape and shooting of a 12-year-old girl in the west side. More than a month later, on December 23, he broke into the home of 24-year-old secretary Anne Arevalo, raping and then shooting her multiple times. Wimberly then stuffed her corpse in a closet, before ransacking the house and then fleeing, leaving Arevalo's twin baby daughters crying, but unharmed, in the adjacent room. On January 24 the following year, Wimberly entered a beauty parlor in West Oakland, demanding money from the two employees present: Vicky J. Russo, from Concord, and Marilyn A. Moore, both 35.

Prior to founding Virco, Julian Virtue had cofounded Virtue Chrome Plating (later known as Virtue Brothers Manufacturing Company) with his brother Philip Virtue in August 1926. This company was quite successful, initially providing custom nickel and chrome plating for furniture manufacturers. By the mid-1930s, the company began to directly manufacture its own furniture from its factory on West Century Boulevard, producing dinette sets for restaurants and consumer homes, chrome- plated chairs for offices, and beauty-parlor equipment. During World War II, the company became a significant supplier of furniture for the military, providing furniture for the sleeping quarters and mess halls of US Navy ships, and thousands of bunkbeds for US Army and Marine barracks.

Marie Laveau I started a beauty parlor where she was a hair- dresser for the wealthier families of New Orleans. Of Laveau's magical career, there is little that can be substantiated, including whether or not she had a snake she named Zombi after an African god, whether the occult part of her magic mixed Roman Catholic saints with African spirits and Native American Spiritualism, or whether her divinations were supported by a network of informants she developed while working as a hairdresser in prominent white households. She excelled at obtaining inside information on her wealthy patrons by instilling fear in their servants whom she either paid or cured of mysterious ailments. Laveau was also known as a female religious leader and community activist.

Lily is mainly a housewife, and her duties include spreading garbage around the mansion and "dusting" with a vacuum cleaner operating in reverse so that it blows dirt about in the nine-room-and-a-dungeon house. During the course of the series, Lily works as a welder in a shipyard, a fashion model, and a palm reader in a tea room. In one episode she forces Herman to give her money so that she and Marilyn can open a beauty parlor, but this soon goes out of business, as Lily assumes her clientele wants to look more like her. These part-time jobs never seem to stick, and Lily would be back to being a homemaker by the next episode.

The time is 1905, the place New York City, where Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to black prostitutes. Her skills and discretion are much in demand, and she has managed to stuff a good sum of money into her quilt over the years. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. Her plan is to find the right man and use the money she's saved to open a beauty parlor where black women will be treated as royally as the white women she sews for.

Mehreen is a Pakistani-American director who is a 20 year veteran of the industry, with a prolific career as Director/Producer of gritty, hard-hitting films and TV series for Pakistani and South Asian Television which have earned her both critical and commercial success. Mehreen has also made a number of narrative shorts that have been screened internationally in film festivals as well as on TV. Her award winning short films and TV dramas include ‘Daughters of the Late Colonel”, “Beauty Parlor”, “Doraha”, “Daam”, amongst others. In 2008 Mehreen directed her debut feature film ‘Ramchand Pakistani’ for which she was awarded the ‘Global Film Initiative Grant’. The film premiered in competition at the Tribeca Film Festival and continued a successful festival run.

Estela Cox (Coca Guazzini), the owner of the place has everything resolved: a "Voice" will be instructing their every move –by means of a small transmitter– every step of the way, how to handle clients, how to treat them, and what style to apply to each and every one of them. Then everyone will want to know who is this "Voice", and why she lives in hiding and does not show her face.

Mahoney's reliance on violence is emphasized in the opening scene of the pilot; she sees a bank robbery while she is in a beauty parlor, shoots and kills three of the perpetrators, and returns to the salon for a pedicure. Television critics and the show's promotional materials called Mahoney "Dirty Harriet" and "Dirty Harriette", comparing her aggressive behavior to Clint Eastwood's character Dirty Harry, and Jon Anderson of the Chicago Tribune described her as "somewhat like Quick Draw McGraw with touches of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood". According to Rose, Mahoney was inspired by Dirty Harry, Wayne, and Rambo. Mahoney and other characters refer to the number of excessive-force complaints filed against her during the series, and she often has difficulties with Internal Affairs.

When the Great Depression coincided with the decline of the extractive economy in Greater Seattle, Cascade began to decline both economically and in terms of population, with its most stable remaining industries being shipbuilding and other marine activities. Howard Wright General Contractors were operating out of 409 Yale Avenue N, where they are still located as of 2008. There was also a business district between the 300 and 600 blocks of Eastlake, mainly on the west side of the street, including grocery stores, a pharmacy, a meat shop, automobile repair, furniture repair, a cabinetmaker, a beauty parlor, a barbershop, several drinking establishments, and a dye works. Although no buildings remain on the east side of the street, which abuts Interstate 5, many of these west-side buildings survive.

St. Wilma. Bedrock's City Hall welcomed visitors to the prehistoric town which included the homes of the Flintstones, the Rubbles, Mr. Slate, and Mr. Granitebilt. Other features included a working movie cinema, playhouse theatre (featuring a show by the Flintstone Trio: Fred, Wilma, and Dino), radio station, telephone company, grocery store, police department, dentist's office, beauty parlor, stone scraper, fire department, Water Buffalo lodge, auto garage, and bank buildings.

Each chapter centers around Henry's ideas to get a bicycle, including selling boxes of bubble gum he found abandoned in an alley and buying a bike from an auction. One day Henry and his family attend the grand opening of the town's new supermarket. At the event, Henry's name is drawn in a raffle to receive $50 worth of beauty-treatment coupons at the supermarket's beauty parlor. After his friend Beezus Quimby asks to buy one of the coupons from him, Henry manages to turn his initial humiliation at winning what he had considered a useless prize into a windfall; he agrees to sell Beezus the coupon she wants, and his mother helps to stir up interest amongst her friends and acquaintances for the majority of the rest.

Following the fire, despite hoping to rebuild the business, Kenneth was evicted from his old salon due to a fire-or-earthquake clause held by his landlords. In addition to this, it emerged that the company was not an S corporation, meaning he would have had to pay both personal and corporate tax on any insurance money, effectively cancelling out any reimbursement. Kenneth rented six chairs in a beauty parlor in the Helmsley Palace Hotel for two years, followed by one third of his staff, and after two years, relocated to the Waldorf-Astoria hotel. Although on a much smaller scale than the original salon, the Waldorf-Astoria establishment retained many of the pampering touches such as finger sandwiches for clients and free bottles of nail polish to accompany manicures.

Soul Food, told through the eyes of 11-year-old Ahmad (Hammond), follows the trials of the Joseph family, a close-knit Chicago family that gets together to have Sunday dinner every week, with plenty of soul food to go around. Mother (Big Mama) Joe (Hall) has three daughters, who each have had varying success in life: oldest daughter Teri (Williams) has become a successful lawyer, but has a strained relationship with younger sister Maxine (Fox), who stole and eventually married Teri's former boyfriend, Kenny (Sams). Teri is currently married to Miles (Beach), a lawyer who quits his job to pursue his dream of being an R&B; musician, which Teri doesn't support. Youngest daughter Robin (Long)—nicknamed "Bird"—has just opened a barbershop/beauty parlor, and married Lem (Phifer), an ex-convict.

Silvano and Alfio are mediocre students who manage to snatch away a degree at the university where they both studied medicine with abysmal results. After a few years Silvano (now a peddler of beauty products who on the side sells pornographic material and sex toys) meets Alfio again, now running a beauty parlor fueled with the money of his neurotic wife. After a comic mishap with a customer left too long in a sauna machine who has apparently suffered a stroke Silvano, seeing the large country villa where Alfio lives with his family, proposes him to turn it into a dieting-farm where rich customers will pay hefty sums to get rid of excess fat. The operation is run haphazardly with several incidents; in the end Alfio suffers a nervous breakdown and goes catatonic.

The movie follows the lives of Prashanth (Sathish Ninasam), an idler with well-to-do parents, and Nandini (Sruthi Hariharan) who is the sole breadwinner of her family of four. Prashanth falls in love with Nandini, who agrees to marry him only on the condition that he gives up his carefree ways and behaves responsibly. The couple's honeyed existence is abruptly cut short when police Inspector Kodanda (Achyuth Kumar) stages a raid on the beauty parlor Nandini was working at, proclaiming that sex-trade activities were being carried out there, and displays condom packets which were apparently found there as proof of the illegal activities being carried out there. Video clips of Nandini and her friend Ratna are circulated continuously on TV, leading to Ratna attempting suicide due to the immense emotional trauma.

Lady Yardly had previously appeared in the short story, "The Adventure of the Western Star" from the Poirot Investigates collection. In chapter 25, Hastings tells Donald Ross that Poirot has left for an appointment relating to his investigation of another case, "the strange disappearance of an Ambassador's boots". When Poirot returns from the appointment, he tells Hastings that it was a case of cocaine smuggling, and that he had spent the last hour in a ladies' beauty parlor. This case sounds identical to the one in the Tommy and Tuppence story, "The Ambassador's Boots" from Partners in Crime (1929), except that Poirot mentions a girl with red hair (Hastings is often described by Poirot as partial to redheads), while the girl in "The Ambassador's Boots" has blonde hair, or black hair when in disguise.

Everything spins around Estela Cox (Coca Guazzini), a successful entrepreneur, but at the same time a very cold tempered woman, willing to do anything to achieve her goals. On the other side, Margarita (María Elena Swett), daughter of the servant and the husband of the powerful Estela, a man that by the way has died in strange circumstances. On a particular day León (Jorge Zabaleta), Emilio (Cristián Arriagada) and Danilo (Francisco Pérez-Bannen), who have one of the most prosperous business in the city, see how their projects fall hard to the ground, when an accident ends the life of the restaurant where they had invested all their valuables. Without financial support, without work, and thinking how are they going to start over, they receive an offer they could not resist: to transform themselves in hair-dressers for a well known beauty parlor.

Pieces such as Beauty Parlor (1933) and Demonstration (1932) depicted women's preoccupation with the culture of beauty, while pieces such as Cold Comfort (1935) more directly address the objectification of women for the pleasure of men. In the late 1930s, Citron became involved with the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project, working as a teacher from 1935 to 1937, and completing numerous government mural commissions between 1938 and 1942. Her work includes the oil on canvas murals titled Horse Swapping in the Manchester, Tennessee post office and TVA Power in the Newport, Tennessee post office, commissioned by the Treasury Section of Fine Arts, and completed in the early 1940s.

Once called “the Queen of Memphis” and “the most complex, the most fabulous building in Memphis,” the Sterick Building featured a white stone spire topped with a green tile roof; its own bank, pharmacy, barber shop, and beauty parlor; and stockbrokers' offices. The first three floors were made from granite and limestone. From the lobby, which was said to “rival the beauty of a Moorish castle,” its eight high-speed elevators ferried the building's 2,000+ workers and guests to the upper floors, including the Regency Room restaurant on the top floor. The original lease of land for the property, dating from the late 1920s, required the $1,500 monthly payment to be paid in gold coin “of standard weight and fineness or its equivalent.” An unsuccessful 1975 lawsuit by the land owners sought to recalculate the rent at the then-current price of gold, or roughly $13,500 per month.

Angie and Brad later marry (they first eloped due to the arguments between their families over the wedding plans, but they would later have a small Catholic family wedding set up by Theresa), merging their two very different families: the blue-blooded suburban Bensons and the blue collar urban Italian-American Falcos. The characters of Hillary Benson and Didi Malloy were not continued after the first season. Angie and Theresa later open a beauty parlor together, where they had to contend with a pleasure- seeking hairstylist, Gianni (Tim Thomerson). The series drew many comparisons to the CBS hit sitcom Rhoda, in which the character of Angie Falco was seen as an Italian-Catholic version of Rhoda Morgenstern (Valerie Harper); both characters strove to break away from their ethnic, close-knit families to find their own voice in the world (however, Pescow, like the Rhoda character, is Jewish in real life).

Mona completed high school in Sandusky at the age of 16, after which she moved to Chicago to attend Poro Beauty School, a cosmetology school run by pioneering African American entrepreneur Madam Annie Malone. Mona graduated, returned to Sandusky, passed the licensing exam, and started working at a beauty parlor owned by one of her sisters. She soon realized that her true talents were in bookkeeping, not cosmetology, and she returned to Chicago to work as an assistant to Madam Malone. When she left Sandusky, Mona's mother advised her, “You’ve known the church all your life. There are a lot of devils in the world, but the ones you’ll find in church are more likely nicer than what’s on the street.” Mona took her mother's advice and quickly joined a church in Chicago where she sang in the church choir directed by Hilda Robinson, the mother of double bassist and photographer Milt Hinton.
