The oracle's advice worked like magic and, that was how Sunkungbade (he who cried to get a crown) was added to his names; the Ifa priest called Oladunjoye foretold that Sunkungbade would at adulthood request that he be allowed to leave to found his own community and that should not be disallowed. Literature arguing for this hypothesis is based upon the fact that there are some syntactic environments under which a null C head would violate the rules of government under the Empty Category Principle, and thus should be disallowed. Other work focuses on some differences in grammatical adjunction possibilities to “that” versus “that-less” clauses in English, for which the CP Hypothesis apparently cannot account.

A sleeper bet is not given the option to raise if other players call, and the player is not buying last action; thus the sleeper bet simply establishes a higher minimum to call for the table during the opening round and allows the player to ignore their turn as long as no one re-raises the sleeper bet. Sleepers are often considered illegal out-of-turn play and are commonly disallowed, but they can speed up a game slightly as a player who posts a sleeper can focus their attention on other matters such as ordering a drink or buying a tray of chips.

Steven Skiena recounts a practical application in transit fare minimisation, an instance of the shortest path problem: given fares and for trips from departure A to some intermediate destination B and from B to final destination C, with only certain pairs of fares allowed to be combined, find the cheapest combined trip from A to C. Skiena's solution consists of sorting the pairs of fares as an instance of the X+Y sorting problem, and then testing the resulting pairs in this sorted order until finding one that is allowed. For this problem, one can use a priority queue of pairs, initialized to contain a single pair with the cheapest overall pair of fares. Then, when a pair (x,y) is found to be disallowed, two more pairs formed by combining x and y with their successors in their respective sorted lists of single-hop fares can be added (if not already present) to the priority queue.
