It is Jackson's first documentary as director. Jackson, whose grandfather (to whom the film is dedicated) fought in the war, intended for the film to be an immersive experience of "what it was like to be a soldier" rather than a story or a recount of events. The title was inspired by the line "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old" from the 1914 poem "For the Fallen" by Laurence Binyon, famous for being used in the Ode of Remembrance.

One line from the song, "more things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of", is from a Tennyson poem called "The Passing of Arthur", which inspired the writing of the song. The song "I Don't Want to Be a Soldier" is unusual for the Junkies because it has a rap break in the song. The band was jamming on the song, and they set up a drum loop. When they listened to their session, they realized there was a hip-hop motion to the loop, so they invited a friend of theirs, Kevin Bond, also known as Rebel, to improvise and record a rap element, using the album themes as a basis.
Vichai was born in a poor farmer family at Sena District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. He had a dream of wanting to be a soldier since childhood, but cannot enter the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School, so he changed the way to become a police officer, starting from being a non- commissioned officer and was promoted to the rank of commissioner until finally. He is widely known as chief of Metropolitan Police Division 1 and deputy chief of Metropolitan Police Bureau, by being a police buster. He earned the alias "Black-Eared Buster" (มือปราบหูดำ) because his left ear has a black birthmark, but the general people often call him "Commander Taem" (ผู้การแต้ม) according to his nickname.
After he had taken minor orders, the bishop refused to ordain him as a priest, telling him that the Church was not his vocation, and that everything in him showed that he ought to be a soldier. Cabrera followed this advice and took part in Carlist conspiracies on the death of Ferdinand VII of Spain. The authorities exiled him and he absconded to Morella to join the forces of the pretender Don Carlos. In this First Carlist War (1833–1839) he rose in a very short time by sheer daring, fanaticism and ferocity to the front rank among the Carlist chiefs who led the bands of Don Carlos in Catalonia, Aragon and Valencia.
The bustling and busy military life in the capital after 1801 left Gotthold wanting to be a soldier. When he was 13 he got into Frikorporalinstituttet, where he in 1810 departed as a second lieutenant in Prince Frederik Ferdinand's Dragoon regiment. The regiment was made in 1807 and didn't yet have a permanent garrison, but just stayed around the country, where Müller led an enjoyable, unbounded life, that soon continued beyond Zealand, without it leading to a serious fight. In December 1813 the regiment combined with the Kolding reserve corps, where Prince Charles of Hesse-Kassel took them down to Flensburg; but shortly after it had to march back to the army on Funen at the king's command.
The decision was controversial for several reasons. Senator Simpson's submission argued that the law had never required Cody to be a soldier, which was untrue, as every version of the law had required this. Simpson's submission cited a book, Above and Beyond, to illustrate this point, but the source listed the correct law that required Cody to be an enlisted soldier. Another problem was the questionable authority of the Board for Correction to contravene several federal statutes; the Medal of Honor revocation had been expressly authorized by Congress, meaning that the restoration went against the law in force in 1872, the law requiring the revocation in 1916, and the modern statute enacted in 1918 that remains substantially unmodified today.
Three years after the events of Blade Runner, the Tyrell Corporation has developed the new Nexus-8 line of replicants, who now possess natural, open-ended lifespans equivalent to that of a regular human. This causes a massive backlash among the human populace, who begin hunting down and killing replicants, seeing them as a now very credible threat to humanity. One of these replicants, Trixie, is attacked by a group of thugs but is rescued by Iggy, who effortlessly disarms and kills them. Iggy reveals to her that he used to be a soldier on a planet called Calantha but deserted when he realized the enemy soldiers he had been fighting and killing were also replicants.
The first season began September 27, 1847, with The School for Scandal. Lester Wallack made his American debut (using the name John Lester) in the afterpiece, Used Up. The company also presented Love's Sacrifice, The Rivals, Temper (a new comedy by Robert Bell), Money, Buckstone's Flowers of the Forest, Ernestine, George Barnwell, She Would Be a Soldier, Robert Macaire, Old Heads and Young Hearts, and London Assurance, the last two starring Blake. Thomas Talfourd's new play, Glencoe, and H. P. Grattan's new drama, Advocate, were also produced. Short pieces included Ladies, Beware; The Jacobite; Thomas Haynes Bayly's Ladder of Love; Captain of the Watch; Box and Cox; and a new farce, Young America.
As early as 1789, leaders had considered how they would sustain their Revolutionary army. In December, Dubois de Crancé, who was both "a man of the left" and "a military man, having served as a King's Musketeer", spoke to the National Assembly on behalf of its military committee. He called for "a people's army, recruited by universal conscription, from which there could be no escape by purchase of a replacement". He said to the National Convention: "And so I say that in a nation which seeks to be free but which is surrounded by powerful neighbours and riddled with secret, festering factions, every citizen should be a soldier and every soldier should be a citizen, if France does not wish to be utterly obliterated".
The Stockton church registers go back to 1561, though some early pages are missing. The “Stockton Town Book”, a manuscript volume containing churchwardens’ accounts for the years 1625-1712, has also been preserved. Among the information included in the Town Book that for the English Civil War (1642-1649) provides a glimpse of a small Norfolk village at the time. Two villagers and the rector went away to fight. Thomas Bande was paid 10 shillings in 1640 “for being content to be a soldier for the Town”; John Bird, parish clerk, received 15 shillings when “impressed” for the same purpose in 1643, and his wife was supported by the parish until he returned “maimed from Naseby fight” (14 June 1645).
Noah moved to New York, where he founded and edited The National Advocate, The New York Enquirer (later merged into the New York Courier and Enquirer), The Evening Star, and The Sunday Times newspapers. Noah was known to use his power as an editor of The National Advocate and law enforcement powers as a sheriff to personally shut down rival plays produced by black theater groups that drew attention and revenue away from his own productions, with some reports that the performers continued to recite their lines as they were dragged from the stage to their cells. In 1819, Noah's most successful play, She Would Be a Soldier, was produced. That play has since established Noah as America's first important Jewish writer.
Born in the county of Wu, as a young man, he was raised to be a soldier, for the sake and the glory of the Sun family. In 212, his elder brother Jiao was promoted general and left in charge of Xiakou, in Jiangxia, in replacement of the general Cheng Pu (程普) who settled the defenses of this territory since it was transferred to Liu Bei, two years ago.. Since then, Sun Huan enter his military service under his elder brother Jiao, and stay by his side for several years. In 219, Jiao died and he inherited the command of his men. He was then named General of the Household acting as Administrator of Jiangxia, tasked with protecting the contested border with Wei.
In 1614, the King and Council decided to create a permanent national army, to augment the war-time mercenary army. Four thousand soldiers would be raised from the peasantry; 2,000 in Jutland, 200 in Funen, 200 in Zealand, and 1,600 in Skåne, Halland, and Blekinge. At first the basis for recruitment was crown land; the tenant of a crown farmstead had either to be a soldier himself, or keep a suitable man, against freedom from taxation. In 1620, all land - most land in Denmark was owned by the nobility - was required to hold soldiers; nine farmsteads keeping one soldier, who had to serve for three years; the soldiers only serving under the colours in time of war; the weaponry kept at armouries by the churches.
In a letter chiding John Bulkley, Barry's older brother, for abandoning legal studies for the military, 19-year-old Barry wrote: "Was I not a girl I would be a Soldier!". Barry's interest in medicine was probably encouraged by the liberal-minded friends of the late James Barry RA, and just before travelling to Edinburgh to enroll as a medical student in 1809, Barry assumed a male identity. A short stature, slight build, unbroken voice, delicate features and smooth skin led others to suspect that Barry was not a man but a pre-pubescent boy. This identity was maintained through surgical training and recruitment into the British Army which, at officer rank level, did not then require a medical examination.
The Army Nurse is a short documentary propaganda film commissioned by the US military to highlight the role and contributions of Army Nurses. The film opens with a combat scene in the summer of 1945, when the war becomes a million men old (presumably the Battle of Okinawa) one of the soldiers is shown getting wounded and the scene goes woozy. The narrator notes "This is the time for you to decide what you're gonna be: a soldier that gets injured and dies, or a soldier that gets injured and lives." The GI soon realizes that he is no longer on the battlefield but in a hospital, and he is being taken care of by a familiar face, the Army Nurse.
P.18 The song's success and its resulting political strength brought supporters to the pacifist movement whose main priority was other issues. Unreconstructed Southerners appealed to popular distaste for the war in Europe in order to argue that the Civil War had been no more justified, and suffragists joined the peace movement because of its political potential and leverage in the campaign for women's right to vote. As with the later 1930s hit "God's Country", it shows that American popular music "generally reflects the isolationist tendencies of the public" and that pro-war songwriters were rarely successful. "I Didn't Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier" was praised especially by Anti-Britain groups in the United States: Irish, German, and Church ministers of many denominations.
Pub (trans. Jack) is the first solo album released by Serbian and former Yugoslav singer-songwriter Đorđe Balašević. The album was produced by Josip Boček, who also played guitar on the album. The album featured the songs such as "Ratnik paorskog srca" which tells of a peasant who returns from World War I and who "wasn't made to be a soldier", "Za sve je kriv Toma Sojer" which tells of three boys which ran away from home influenced by The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, "Boža zvani Pub" which tells of a legendary gambler nicknamed Pub (Jack), romantic ballad "Lepa protina kći" ("Beautiful Priest's Daughter"), social poem "Za treću smenu" ("For the Third Shift") and existential ballad "Na pola puta" ("Halfway Point").
A robot designed by Max Young, but built by Alistair Smythe, the Mark XIV possessed artificial intelligence and three distinct personalities (based on aspects of Max himself) in each of its three heads. Attacking Spider-Man and Black Cat at a prison, the Mark XIV seemed to have the upper hand, until Spider-Man caused the robot's minds to quarrel with one another; in the end, the Slayer blew up its own head. The Amazing Spider-Man #371 Another Mark XIV, this one lacking a mind, was created by Alistair to be a soldier in his Spider-Slayer army and was destroyed by Spider-Man. The Mark XIV could fly through the use of a jetpack, could shoot energy beams out of its fingers, and possessed super-strength.

In 2016, the film was screened at the Independence Day Film Festival by the Directorate of Film Festivals and the Ministry of Defence. On Independence Day in 2017, ZeeTV premiered the film on Zee Classic. In the backdrop of the 2017 Doklam standoff Haqeeqat was again remembered by the Indian media as a comparison for 1962 and the current tensions; to be specific the last stand of Ahir Company,13 Kumaon led by Major Shaitan Singh at Rezang La. In the backdrop of the 2020 China–India skirmishes, on 6 July 2020, an article in The Quint by Pankhuri Shukla comments on the "unsanitized" two-hour long portrayal of war in the film. The fights are not "sugarcoated" and the internal conflict of what is means to be a soldier are depicted.
As a youngster I spent every moment I could hunting. I used to come home from school at 2:30 in the wintertime and I was out of the house, hunting until sunset." Masters completed high school at Anderson in 1927 at age 16, delivering the valedictory speech when he was still only 16, saying, "If we fail to prepare for our role in society, we play falsely with our God, our country, and with the inner man, our conscience."Original copy of the valedictory speech, in Masters Family library, 1927 Though he had appointments to both the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy upon high school graduation,Oral History Collection: "I felt driven, somewhere deep inside me, I wanted to be a soldier, or a sailor, or a Marine.
Joining the Collins Street Independent Church, John became interested in social questions and adopted feminist and anti-conscriptionist views that were quite radical for the time. She was a friend of Vida Goldstein and assisted in her attempt to enter Parliament in 1913, and was a member of the anti-conscription Australian Freedom League. When Australian Prime Minister Billy Hughes proposed compulsory military service in order to provide reinforcements for the depleted Australian Imperial Force, John and other anti-war feminists reacted by forming the Women's Peace Army (WPA), which worked to oppose both conscription and militarism. John was especially noted for singing at WPA events, leading authorities to ban public performances of her signature song I Didn't Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier; a ban that John proceeded to ignore.
The band continued to play shows during the spring of 1995 before going on hiatus so that the members could return to work with their main bands. During this time the band released the Live at the Moore concert film, which was a live performance recorded at Seattle's Moore Theatre on April 29, 1995. Also, during this time the band contributed a cover of John Lennon's "I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier" to the 1995 John Lennon tribute album, Working Class Hero. In 1996, a live version of "River of Deceit" surfaced on the Bite Back: Live at Crocodile Cafe compilation album, although by this time Mad Season had long been dormant from live work as McCready and Martin went back to work with their respective bands and Saunders joined The Walkabouts.

Prince Felix Constantin Alexander Johann Nepomuk of Salm- Salm, was born at Anholt Castle, the Residenz of the former Principality of Salm, which had been incorporated into the Prussian Province of Westphalia by 1815. He was the third and youngest son of Prince Florentin, the formerly reigning Prince of Salm-Salm (1786–1846), and his wife Flaminia di Rossi (1795-1840), a Corsican noblewoman and niece of Prince Felice Pasquale Baciocchi. The 1815 Congress of Vienna confirmed the Salm dynasty's loss of sovereignty but recognized the retention of royal privileges of the Princes of Salm-Salm as a Mediatized House in the German Confederation. Felix grew up training to be a soldier at a cadet-school in Berlin and became an officer in the Prussian 11th Hussar Regiment in 1846.
It was almost impossible to sing anti-war songs on the music-hall stage. The managers of music halls would be worried about their license, and the singalong nature of music hall songs meant that one needed to sing songs which had the support of the vast majority of the audience. In the music hall, dissent about the war drive was therefore limited to sarcastic songs such as "Oh It's a Lovely War" or bitter complaints about the stupidity of conscription tribunals (for example "The Military Representative"). When the anti-war movement had, for a few months in 1916, a mass audience, anti-war music hall songs from the United States such as "I Didn't Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier" were sung at anti-war meetings, but not on the music hall stage.

They were apparently motivated by Britain's involvement in the Iraq War and other conflicts.. In response, Dr. Afifi al-Akiti, the KFAS Fellow in Islamic Studies at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, and the Islamic Centre Lecturer in Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Theology – University of Oxford, wrote an internationally acclaimed Fatwa against terrorism titled "Defending the Transgressed by Censuring the Reckless against the Killing of Civilians". In May 2013, British soldier Lee Rigby was publicly killed in Woolwich, London. Two converts to Islam of Nigerian heritage were found guilty of the murder, one of them having claimed to be a soldier of Allah as his unsuccessful legal defence. In 2017, there were four terrorist attacks: the Westminster attack, the Manchester Arena bombing, the 2017 London Bridge attack and the Parsons Green train bombing.
During the investigation, Voitov claimed that he lived through robbing people, stealing mobile phones from passers-by. But the numerous cases listed by him, with the exception of one, were not confirmed, or at least there were not reports to the police from the victims. From five to thirteen years old, he lived with his parents on Izmailovsky Boulevard, then, after his parents divorced, he spent some time in Riga with his father, where in 2012 he was sentenced to a year of imprisonment for the desecration of graves at a Jewish cemetery. He wanted to be a soldier, so, together with Karataev and Pavlov, he tried to go to war against the rebels in the nationalist battalion "Azov", but all three were instead deployed on the Russian-Ukrainian border, and then returned home to Moscow by bus.
In July 2012, Barrett Martin confirmed that Mark Lanegan would be singing several songs on a new Mad Season release. In October 2012, Barrett Martin announced a Mad Season box set, which will be released on March 12, 2013. In the interview Martin said that: Legacy Recordings released an expanded deluxe edition of Above in April 2013. A three-disc boxset comprising two CDs and one DVD, it includes a digitally remastered version of the studio album, the John Lennon cover "I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier", some unreleased tracks from the band's unfinished second album with lyrics and vocals by Mark Lanegan, the band's "Live at the Moore" performance on April 29, 1995 on CD, DVD, and vinyl, and a previously unreleased full concert video of the band's New Year's Eve performance from the now-defunct Seattle club RKCNDY.
The widowed Charlotte did not wish to remarry, but she met and was attracted to the intelligence of Philippe de Mornay, lord of Plessis-Marly, a Huguenot fighter in the religious wars of the Protestant Reformation and a leading French Protestant. In 1576, at age 26, with an eight-year-old daughter from her first marriage, she married Philippe (age 27), who was also a writer and who had escaped the St. Bartholomew massacre as well. He continued to be a soldier but soon became adviser to then-Huguenot King Henry of Navarre, who wanted the French throne. Philippe was a well- respected soldier and author and was called the Pope of the Huguenots. In marrying Philippe de Mornay, Charlotte’s life course changed dramatically; she was now set on traveling with her husband as much as she could.
Seven Beauties () is a 1975 Italian language film written and directed by Lina Wertmüller and starring Giancarlo Giannini, Fernando Rey, and Shirley Stoler. Written by Wertmüller, the film is about an Italian everyman who deserts the army during World War II and is then captured by the Germans and sent to a prison camp, where he does anything to survive. Through flashbacks, we learn about his family of seven unattractive sisters, his accidental murder of one sister's lover, his imprisonment in an insane asylum—where he rapes a patient—and his volunteering to be a soldier to escape confinement. For her work on the film, Wertmüller became the first woman nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director, a feat not matched again until 1993, when New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion was nominated for The Piano.
Sometimes a nobleman was himself the only soldier that his manor provided for the cavalry and possibly with less-than-adequate equipment. In some cases, some impoverished nobles provided a cavalryman together (it was actually unavoidable if a manor of lesser gentry was divided between several heirs, as the Swedish inheritance law provided, contrary to the primogeniture inheritances of French countries). It was also possible to have the obligation fulfilled by a paid employee - no particular condition required the lord himself to be a soldier (as evidenced by lord Bo Jonsson Grip, fiefholder of most of Finland, never becoming a soldier himself), it was just the evolving lifestyle of the noble class. Soon it was also agreed that the king should govern the Swedish realm (to which Finland belonged) in cooperation with a Privy Council (or Royal Council) where the bishops and the most distinguished magnates (i.e.
This opposition was not welcomed by Hughes, and Ryan was the only state premier to openly oppose the federal government on the issue. The split became serious by 1917, with Ryan acknowledged as the de facto leader of those advocating a "No" vote in the 1917 plebiscite on conscription, and the state and federal government at odds on other issues including industrial disputes, price controls, and coastal shipping. The federal government responded to this anti-conscription sentiment in the community with a series of censorship measures, enabled by the War Precautions Act 1914 which permitted the federal government to censor speech which in their view would have interfered with the war effort. Some of these censorship measures were unorthodox even for the time; the public performance of I Didn't Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier was prohibited, a ban that was openly flouted by radical anti-conscription campaigner Cecilia John.
Lehrer remained in Harvard's doctoral program for several years, taking time out for his musical career and to work as a researcher at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. He was drafted into the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, working at the National Security Agency (NSA). (Lehrer has stated that he invented the Jello shot during this time, as a means of circumventing the base's ban on alcoholic beverages.) These experiences became fodder for songs, such as "The Wild West is Where I Want to Be" and "It Makes a Fellow Proud to Be a Soldier". It was many years before Lehrer publicly revealed that he had been assigned to the NSA, since the mere fact of its existence was classified at the time; this left him in the interesting position of implicitly using nuclear weapons work as a cover story for something more sensitive.
Frank C. Stanley died of pleurisy in 1910. He was replaced in the group by John H. Meyer, and Henry Burr took over as their lead singer and manager, a position he retained until the group dissolved in 1928. The Peerless Quartet's popularity peaked in the years between 1911 and 1918. Their most successful recordings over the period included "I Want A Girl (Just Like The Girl That Married Dear Old Dad)" and "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" (both for Columbia in 1911); "The Ghost of the Violin" (Columbia, 1913); "Don't Blame It All On Broadway" (Columbia and Victor, 1914); "I Didn't Raise My Boy To Be A Soldier" (Columbia, 1915); "My Bird of Paradise" (Columbia and Victor, 1915); "The Lights of My Home Town" (Victor, 1916); "Over There" (Columbia, 1917); and "I Don't Know Where I'm Going But I'm On My Way" (Columbia and Victor, 1918).
Set against a historically authentic backdrop of Indonesia's struggle for independence in 1947, during the Van Mook offensive into the heart of republican territory in Central Java, Merah Putih is a story about young Indonesian cadets who bond together despite their differences in religion, ethnicity, class and culture, to become guerrilla fighters for Indonesia's independence. The film was inspired by the real-life experiences of the brave cadets massacred in Lengkong, and all the men and women who fought for a free and united Indonesia between 1945 and 1948. The movie depicts the diversity of Indonesians through its unique and different characters. There is Amir, a quiet and devout Muslim, (played by prominent actor Lukman Sardi) who gives up his job as a teacher and even leaves his beloved wife to become a cadet, while hot-headed Tomas (Donny Alamsyah) comes all the way from Sulawesi to be a soldier in a bid to get revenge against the Dutch soldiers who slaughtered his family.
" Eisenhower believed that other generals such as Bradley should be given the credit for planning the successful Allied campaigns across Europe in which Patton was merely "a brilliant executor". Notwithstanding Eisenhower's estimation of Patton's abilities as a strategic planner, his overall view of Patton's military value in achieving Allied victory in Europe is revealed in his refusal to even consider sending Patton home after the slapping incidents of 1943, after which he privately remarked, "Patton is indispensable to the war effort—one of the guarantors of our victory." As Assistant Secretary of War John J. McCloy told Eisenhower: "Lincoln's remark after they got after Grant comes to mind when I think of Patton—'I can't spare this man, he fights'." After Patton's death, Eisenhower would write his own tribute: "He was one of those men born to be a soldier, an ideal combat leader ... It is no exaggeration to say that Patton's name struck terror at the hearts of the enemy.
There is, however, no documentary proof that "The Bold Fusilier" existed before 1900, and evidence suggests that this song was in fact written as a parody of "Waltzing Matilda" by English soldiers during the Boer War where Australian soldiers are known to have sung "Waltzing Matilda" as a theme. The first verse of "The Bold Fusilier" is: > A bold fusilier came marching back through Rochester > Off from the wars in the north country, > And he sang as he marched > Through the crowded streets of Rochester, > Who'll be a soldier for Marlboro and me? In 2008, Australian amateur historian Peter Forrest claimed that the widespread belief that Paterson had penned the ballad as a socialist anthem, inspired by the Great Shearers' Strike, was false and a "misappropriation" by political groups."Waltzing Matilda" 'not socialist', BBC News, 5 May 2008 Forrest asserted that Paterson had in fact written the self-described "ditty" as part of his flirtation with Macpherson, despite his engagement to someone else.
Pinder's composition and lead vocal "My Song", a deep, reflective atmospheric item, concluded the Moodies' 1971 album Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, on which he also took co-credit with the entire band for the unusual opening track "Procession" (an attempt aurally to depict the evolution of vocal and musical harmony through time). He also sang a featured co-lead vocal and solo spot along with Hayward, Lodge and Thomas on Edge's song "After You Came". Also in 1971 Pinder guested on John Lennon's Imagine album on the songs "I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier (I Don't Wanna Die)" and "Jealous Guy", playing tambourine rather than the mellotron he intended to play, because by Pinder's account the tapes in Lennon's mellotron looked like "a bowl of spaghetti", hence the switch to tambourine. In 1972 the Moodies, then at the height of their popularity, retreated to Mike Pinder's home studio to record Seventh Sojourn, which included two Pinder-penned and -sung contributions: "Lost in a Lost World", and "When You're A Free Man", dedicated to Timothy Leary.
In the British army, a woman told the following story to researchers in 2006: > ‘A friend was out on an exercise when a group of men ducked her head in a > bucket of water and each time she came up for breath she had to repeat “I am > useless and I am a female”. She told the story and said it was a joke but I > could see she was upset.’ In the Canadian armed forces, demeaning attitudes to women are pervasive, according to the Deschamps Review of 2015: > 'Interviewees reported regularly being told of orders to “stop being > pussies” and to “leave your purses at home” [...] The use of the word > “cunt”, for example, is commonplace, and rape jokes are tolerated. [...] A > commonly held attitude is that, rather than be a soldier, a sailor or an > aviator, a woman will be labeled an “ice princess”, a “bitch”, or a “slut”. > Another saying is that women enter the CAF “to find a man, to leave a man, > or to become a man”.
The potency of these tales can be gauged from the following statement by the poet Robert Burns, writing some three centuries after they were first related. > The two first books I ever read in private, and which gave me more pleasure > than any two books I ever read again, were The Life of Hannibal and The > History of Sir William Wallace [a modernised version of Blind Harry by > William Hamilton of Gilbertfield]. Hannibal gave my young ideas such a turn > that I used to strut in raptures up and down after the recruiting drum and > bagpipe, and wish myself tall enough that I could be a soldier; while the > story of Wallace poured a Scottish prejudice into my veins which will boil > along there till the flood-gates of life shut in eternal rest.letter to Dr. > John Moore, dated 2 August 1787, quoted in M. Lindsay, Robert Burns, London > and New York 1979 The Battle of Stirling Bridge is depicted in the 1995 film Braveheart, but it bears little resemblance to the real battle, there being no bridge (due mainly to the difficulty of filming around the bridge itself) and tactics resembling the Battle of Bannockburn.
