In 1750 Charleton published A Chemical Analysis of Bath Waters. The book describes a series of experiments to determine the mineral constituents of the thermal springs at Bath. The chemical system of Hermann Boerhaave was followed. He published a second tract An Inquiry into the Efficacy of Bath Waters in Palsies, and reprinted it in 1774, with his first publication and Tract the Third, containing Cases of Patients admitted into the Hospital at Bath under the care of the late Mr. Oliver, with some additional Cases and Notes.

The volume is dedicated to Thomas Osborne, 4th Duke of Leeds, who was one of Charleton's patients. It contains case histories, and argues that part of the reputation of the Bath waters as a cure for palsy was due to the large number of cases of paralysis from lead poisoning who arrived with useless limbs; and were cured by abstinence from cider having lead in solution, and by frequent bathing.

He was established there as a physician, as well as in London, which was his home, his address in 1701 being the Old House, Ludgate Hill. Dr. Baynard is said to have been the ‘Horoscope’ of Garth's ‘Dispensary.’ Sir John Floyer's treatise on cold bathing, entitled ‘The ancient Psychrolousia revived’ (1702), has appended to it a letter from Dr. Baynard ‘containing an Account of many Eminent Cures done by the Cold Baths in England; together with a Short Discourse of the wonderful Virtues of the Bath Waters on decayed Stomachs, drank Hot from the Pump.’ Dr. Baynard's popular work entitled ‘Health, a Poem.

Baylies was a native of Worcestershire and practised for some years as an apothecary. After marrying the daughter of Thomas Cooke, a wealthy attorney of Evesham, he began the study of medicine, obtained the degree of M.D. at Aberdeen on 18 December 1748, and was elected a fellow of the Edinburgh College of Physicians on 7 August 1757. Baylies practised for many years at Bath. He published in 1757 Reflections on the Use and Abuse of Bath Waters, which involved him in a dispute with a Dr. Lucas and a Dr. Oliver, the two being the chief doctors of the city.

Until 1 May 1761, when he and Peirce both resigned, he ruled the institution. The third article in Charleton's Three Tracts on Bath Waters, 1774, consisted of ‘histories of hospital cases under the care of the late Dr. Oliver,’ a subject on which he had himself contemplated the publication of a volume; and Some Observations on Stomach Complaints, which were found among his papers, were printed in pp. 76–95 of the same work. Peirce and Oliver were painted together by William Hoare, R.A. in 1742, in a picture now in the board-room of the hospital, in the act of examining three patients, candidates for admission.

Rusthall, which derived its name from the rusty nature of the local water, also had its own wells known locally for their curative powers. A cold water bath house used to be situated on the south side of Rusthall Common, in the grounds of what is now the Beacon Hotel. The bath waters were known for their coldness and the clearness of the water which were observed to be "as excellent as any in the kingdom".Clifford, J. Barnes took to hiding in the communal bath waters in the dressing room to avoid Ferguson's famed 'hair- dryer' treatment. He was transferred back to Manchester City in 1987, but soon fell out of favour and was loaned out to Bolton Wanderers, Port Vale and Wimbledon. After leaving Maine Road in 1988, he embarked on a remarkable tour of global football, playing a handful of games for Hull City, SC Farense (in two spells), Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland, Stockport County, Footscray JUST, Bury, Drogheda United, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Stafford Rangers, Northwich Victoria, Wrexham, Radcliffe Borough, Mossley, Hamrun Spartans, and Cliftonville. This took him to Portugal, Australia, Malta, the United States, and both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

" On 15 February 1780 he wrote > An ill state of health, the effect I believe of a cold Climate, has obliged > me for some years past to drink the Bath Waters & the doctors now thinking > the same absolutely necessary, I have to request your Lordships procurring > me His Majesty's Gracious Permission for that purpose. I shall not however > leave this [place] before the Month of May or June, nor I have given Your > Lordship every necessary information respecting the Transactions in > question. The reply from the Secretary of State read, "As the present Situation of Affairs would make your Absence from your Post prejudicial to His Majesty's Service by depriving Us of the useful Intelligence you transmit, I hope you will be able to deferr your Journey to Bath". Following a further request for leave the Secretary of State wrote to Corry on 16 May 1780 saying, "I have laid Your Letter before the King and I have Pleasure to acquaint You that His Majesty is graciously pleased to permit You to return to England as soon as it may suit Your Convenience.
