Those Darlins performing in San Diego in 2014 Jessi Zazu, Nikki Kvarnes, and Kelley Anderson formed Those Darlins after meeting at the Southern Girls Rock & Roll Camp in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. They began by covering Carter Family songs and employed traditional southern instrumentation, including washboard and clogging, as well as less traditional instruments like the baritone ukulele. The three adopted the stage name Darlin, a practice that continued until Anderson's departure in 2012. They released their first single, "Wild One" in 2008 and received coverage from Pitchfork Media among others.

Kings County Queens are a Brooklyn-based country music band known for their authentic, Nashville-like sound. The band was formed in early 2000, and their debut album, Big Ideas, was released by Rubric Records on May 7, 2002. Its original lineup consisted of Suzanne Price (accordion), Chris Bowers (vocals, guitar), Daria Klotz (vocals, baritone ukulele), Rennie Elliot (snare drums), and David Wm. Sims (bass guitar). Elliot and Sims later left the band to pursue other projects, after which they were replaced by Johnny Rock and Eric Eble, respectively.

The baritone ukulele usually uses linear G6 tuning: D3–G3–B3–E4, the same as the highest four strings of a standard 6-string guitar. Bass ukuleles are tuned similarly to bass guitars: E1–A1–D2–G2 for U-Bass style instruments (sometimes called contrabass), or an octave higher, E2–A2–D3–G3, for Ohana type metal-string basses. Sopranino ukulele tuning is less standardized. They usually are tuned re-entrantly, but frequently at a higher pitch than C; for example, re-entrant G6 tuning: D5–G4–B4–E5.

Tenor guitars are normally tuned in fifths (usually C3 G3 D4 A4, similar to the tenor banjo, mandola, or the viola) although other tunings are also common, such as "Chicago tuning" (D3 G3 B3 E4, same as the top four strings of a standard guitar or a baritone ukulele), "Irish" or "octave" tuning (G2 D3 A3 E4, like an octave mandolin or tenor violin, one octave below the usual violin/mandolin tuning) and various "open" tunings, for slide playing. He is also an original member of the Guys All-Star Shoe Band on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion. He has performed in concert with William Warfield and Earl Wild at the Lewisohn Stadium, at Town Hall with Andrea Velis, and with Charles Bressler, playing the American premier performance of songs for tenor and guitar by William Walton and Benjamin Britten. In 2009, he played banjo, mandolin, and baritone ukulele onstage in the Broadway show Chicago at the Ambassador Theatre.
