Rubchinskiy's headquarters in Moscow, located near the Barrikadnaya metro station in the shadow of one of Stalin's skyscrapers, are barely a 15-minute walk from the store of Ulyana Sergeenko, a 37-year-old Muscovite who shows her dressy, sometimes fussy clothes — bustiers, gypsy skirts, ball gowns aplenty — on the Parisian haute couture schedule.

Fringed, shredded houndstooth and tweed were inspired by black and white tile flooring; glinting silver sequin tunic capes and jackets provided a jolt of silverware (silverwear); mint green and black feathered fantasias escaped from the aviary; and asymmetric ball gowns of beaded fringe and under-feathers, tulle and lace, teetered alluringly close to the edge of coming undone.

The unexpected mini moment is a far cry from the singer's previous Met Gala designs (in the past, she opted for long ball gowns), but we'd be lying if we said it hasn't been fun watching Swift step out of her red carpet comfort zone and into "rock 'n' roll chick" style persona Anna Wintour has created for the star.

At Off-White, it meant Hadids of all ages (Bella and Gigi and mother Yolanda) plus other famous models (Karlie Kloss and Alek Wek and Carolyn Murphy) in a bit of this, a bit of that: slick sapphire-and-white cow-print pencil skirts and trench coats; hallucinogenic houndstooth-check suiting; mint green leather jumpsuits and amethyst knits; billowing tulle ball gowns spliced on top with Arc'teryx technical jackets, the taffeta of the outdoor rec world.

Viktor & Rolf, celebrating their 25th anniversary in business, decided to revisit 25 of their greatest surrealist hits, remade in white satin: the bedclothes show of 2005, in which sheets and pillowcases were transformed into all-in-one dresses; the chainsawed tulle show of 2009, in which giant chunks were bored out of ball gowns (the credit crunch was making everyone cut back); the Russian doll couture show of 1999, when the model Maggie Rizer was swallowed up by 10 layers of clothes.

She went where no similar brand had gone before: not just to the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she was widely photographed on the red carpet mixing feathered ball gowns and crew-neck sweaters (and, last year, with Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner of "Girls" both channeling Ms. Lyons's look), but also into the pages of Vogue, and finally to New York Fashion Week itself, as J. Crew held presentations in the official collection venues.

More cutting is Lorde's 2013 song "Royals," which seems to be aware of how mismatched the music is to the times: "But every song's like gold teeth, Grey Goose, trippin' in the bathroom / Bloodstains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room / We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams ..." Part of what looking across the genres shows you is that the big-selling, celebrity-driven mainstream of just about every style of music offers very little social or economic critique.
