In many modern pop musical groups, a lead singer performs the primary vocals or melody of a song, as opposed to a backing singer who sings backup vocals or the harmony of a song. Backing vocalists sing some, but usually not all, parts of the song often singing only in a song's refrain or humming in the background. An exception is five-part gospel a cappella music, where the lead is the highest of the five voices and sings a descant and not the melody. Some artists may sing both the lead and backing vocals on audio recordings by overlapping recorded vocal tracks.

While at Berklee College of Music, he offered advice to young singers who wanted to become famous. "Everyone starts out dreaming, and then you get married, have a baby, buy a house and a car, and what I want to let people know is that there are so many jobs out there. My thinking is, if you're a musician and you can make music instead of digging a ditch, make it." During the mid-70s, she joined up with David Gates, founder member of the band Bread, and became his backing singer for a number of his solo tours, alongside her future husband. However, Eddi returned to Glasgow (where she lived with her grandmother in Pollok) to finish her compulsory schooling. She began playing the guitar at the age of ten, and started her musical career busking, first in Glasgow's Sauchiehall Street, then in the early 1980s in London and around Europe (where she also worked with circus and performance artists). Back in Scotland, while finding factory work in Irvine and working part-time in Sirocco Recording Studio in Kilmarnock, she answered an advert in the music press and travelled to London to audition and join the punk band Gang of Four, who needed a backing singer for their appearance on British television music show The Old Grey Whistle Test and for their UK tour. As a result of his family's links with autism and Asperger's syndrome, Kennedy became co-patron (with his wife) of the charity Autism NI in 2010.
QED only released one album and disbanded by 1985, Morris continued session and touring work with other artists, Belton went on to Mondo Rock, and Goh to Eurogliders. Morris recorded a duet with INXS lead singer, Michael Hutchence, on a cover of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood's hit "Jackson", it was included as a bonus track on the April 1984 (cassette only) INXS EP, Dekadance, which reached number two on the charts. Morris and INXS performed "Jackson" live at the 1984 Countdown Music and Video Awards held on 19 May 1985. Despite having worked with her family on The Jacksons variety TV show and having been a backing singer for the likes of Betty Wright in the late 70's, Jackson was the last Jackson family sibling to release an album at the age of 34, mostly due to wanting to raise her two young daughters, Stacee and Yashi, in a secure family environment, waiting until she felt they were old enough. The recording of the album was a family affair, as her brother Michael Jackson wrote, produced and sang backing vocals on the title track. Brothers Marlon, Jackie, Tito and Randy co-wrote "Come Alive It's Saturday Night", with the latter two producing the song as well. Tito also co-wrote "Hey Boy" with his wife, the late Delores "Dee Dee" Martes.
The album finds Newman bitter and satirical – as "biting as ever, yet unafraid to tackle personal and heartfelt concerns". Newman tackles issues such as the state of American culture in "My Country", which chronicles suburbia's growing dependence on television, and "The World Isn’t Fair", which takes a look at the world through the eyes of Karl Marx. Another subject is aging - "Shame" takes a negative look at an "older man courting a younger woman" via the barbed lyrics and an exchange between the lead vocalist and the backing singer. "I’m Dead (But I Don't Know It)" is more self-referential in dealing with aging rock stars and commenting: "Everything I write sounds the same / Each record that I’m making / Is like a record that I’ve made / Just not as good".
Their follow-up single was a re-working of "Born Free" (made famous by fellow UK finalist Matt Monro) which was a charity single to raise money for the Quality of Life Animal Sanctuary in Devon. Sam has his own band in America called California Screaming.
As a drummer/backing singer, Abbot joined the Black Abbots (founded by Robert Turner) in Chester during the mid-1960s and released several singles to modest chart success on minor labels in the early 1970s. The band only signed their first major recording contract in 1977, putting out a series of comedy singles and one live album (Abbot now taking lead vocals) before disbanding in 1980. Subsequently he appeared as a comedian, winning the 'Funniest Man On Television' award five times. Abbot appeared on the television show The Comedians under his birth name (Russ Roberts). From 1980 onward, he released some albums as a solo artist and appeared in several TV series. The most successful of his music singles, "Atmosphere", did well in the UK top 10, peaking at No. 7 in 1985.
Acacia's third single (and their first release for Radar Records) was 1995's "Hate" EP. By this time, Acacia had gained a part-time fifth member in the shape of backing singer Imogen Heap, who was recruited to the project by Sigsworth after he had heard her voice on a demo tape. Although Heap would never become a full-time member of the band, she was featured prominently on almost every song the band recorded from then on, and would perform at Acacia's live gigs whenever possible. Members of Acacia would return the favour by performing in Heap's backing band for her 1996 showcase at the Prince's Trust Concert in Hyde Park, London. Acacia's fourth single, released later in 1996, was "Sway", a song of bisexual intrigue which gained the band some more press attention (although not much mainstream attention).

The Beatles were also known for their close style of vocal harmonies – all Beatles members sang both lead and backing vocals at some point, especially John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who frequently supported each other with harmonies, often with fellow Beatle George Harrison joining in. Ringo Starr, while not as prominent in the role of backing singer as his three bandmates due to his distinctive voice, can be heard singing backing vocals in such tracks as "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill" and "Carry That Weight". Examples of three-part harmonies by Lennon, McCartney and Harrison include "Nowhere Man", "Because", "Day Tripper", and "This Boy". The members of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Bee Gees all each wrote songs and sang back- up or lead vocals and played various instruments on their albums and various collaborations with each other.
Frankie Valli, lead singer of the Four Seasons, became very angry backstage and subsequently fired not only DeLoach, but also several other band members and the band's manager. Although this first stint with the Seasons did not end well, DeLoach went on to appear with the band for two additional tours over the next 30 years. After continuing to perform in various Las Vegas show bands, DeLoach got the opportunity to be a substitute in the band backing singer, comedian, and impressionist, Danny Gans at The Rio hotel in Las Vegas, before he joined the band permanently when it moved into the theater built for Gans at The Mirage. DeLoach provided backing vocals and played the keyboards in Gans' shows, following Gans to his final showroom at the Encore Theater at the Wynn, in February 2009.

Lorenz again served as Carey's backing singer on her March 16, 1992 appearance on the television show MTV Unplugged, where he and Carey sang a cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" - a duet the two reprised at Michael Jackson's memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on July 7, 2009. In 1991, he co-wrote "If You Go Away" for New Kids on the Block, which was included on their last studio album, Face the Music.
During the later days of indie pop group The Field Mice, frontman and songwriter Robert "Bobby" Wratten and backing singer Anne Mari Davies, already musical partners in the group, formed a romantic relationship just before that group disbanded in 1991; their last album, For Keeps, documented the start of their personal relationship. The couple formed Northern Picture Library in 1993, a band which former Field Mice drummer Mark Dobson soon joined, which moved the couple into a dub-influenced dream pop direction that nonetheless retained the jangle pop guitar sound from the Field Mice. Primarily studio-only artists at this point, Davies began suffering from stage fright, strong enough to make live performances impossible for her, and in some of the band's contemporary material, Wratten and Davies had begun questioning their relationship. Soon after, the couple split up, both romantically and as musical collaborators, thus also ending Northern Picture Library.
Tyrell first appeared with Bruce Springsteen in 1992 on his Lucky Town album, as a backing vocalist. She subsequently performed on every Springsteen album of new studio material since that time, primarily as a violinist and backing singer, including the albums The Ghost of Tom Joad and Devils & Dust, which were not E Street Band albums, making her the musician who has performed on more Springsteen albums in the last twenty years than most of the other members of the E Street Band, with the exception of Patti Scialfa and Springsteen himself. In 2002 her violin became a key part of the sound on Springsteen's album The Rising, and Tyrell joined the E Street Band for the subsequent 2002–2003 Rising Tour. She also played a prominent role in his non-E Street, big band folk-oriented 2006 album We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions and the subsequent Sessions Band Tour.

Seven-piece Paris Angels formed in Manchester. Lead singer Rikki Turner, guitarist Paul Wagstaff and bassist Scott Carey were the group's original members, writing songs in the style of Echo & the Bunnymen, but later additions to the band brought other influences, including backing singer Jayne Gill, who was a fan of the Velvet Underground, and Steven Tajti, who was interested in Moog synthesisers, and his addition to the band contributed to what Carey described as "that Donna Summer/Kraftwerk (in our minds) edge." As the group performed Velvet Underground and Bunnymen covers, they began listening to electro and early house music. The group arrived on the music scene as the Madchester scene was peaking in popularity, and the scene caused the band to change direction and begin fusing acid house with indie music; Carey later told Louder Than War: According to Damon Wilkinson of Manchester Evening News, the group combined their love of acid house, post-punk and the Velvet Underground to "create their own unique take on Baggy," a combination brought together on their best-known song, "Perfume" (1990), which was the group's debut single, released after singing to independent label Sheer Joy.
