After the nuclear war, transmissions from Earth stop suddenly for no reason apparent to the residents of Avernus. By the end of the trilogy, Avernus is a lifeless, empty shell. Dragotha is a powerful undead dragon known as a dracolich and a major player in Dungeon's Age of Worms adventure path. Dragotha was formerly a powerful red dragon, the mightiest consort of Tiamat. At some point Dragotha offended his mistress, and was forced to leave Avernus. Making his way to Oerth, Dragotha fell in with Kyuss, and eventually became a dracolich and Kyuss' greatest servant.

Since Sextus Pompeius had command of the sea on the coasts of Italy, Agrippa's first care was to provide a safe harbour for Octavian's ships. Temple of Augustus in Pozzuoli Lucius Cocceius Auctus (1st century BC and 1st century AD) was a Roman architect employed by Octavian's strategist (and intended successor) Agrippa to excavate the subterranean passageways known as the crypta neapolitana connecting modern-day Naples and Pozzuoli and the Grotta di Cocceio, connecting Lake Avernus and Cumae. Cocceius was responsible for the conversion of the Capitolium in Pozzuoli into a Temple of Augustus with the backing of the merchant Lucius Calpurnius. Cocceius Auctus also built the original Pantheon in Rome.

Set during high summer in the tropical continent, Campannlat. Yuli's settlement is now the capital city of a great empire. Meanwhile, the residents of Avernus are holding occasional lotteries to ameliorate their ennui, the winners being allowed to go down to Helliconia and experience a short period of "real life" before succumbing to the Bone Fever/Fat Death virus. Despite the fatal consequences, the chance of visiting the planet's surface and interacting with its people is considered a great adventure, and the lotteries are popular.

Greenwood Publishing Group 2007, , p. 716 Agrippa cut through part of the Via Ercolana and dug a channel to connect Lake Lucrinus to the sea in order to change it into a harbor. Additionally, Agrippa dug a second, longer channel on the northern side of Lake Lucrinus to connect it to Lake Avernus, a marshy lake further inland, creating a multi-tiered port complex that was not visible from the outer bay where Sextus' ships routinely patrolled. Agrippa named this harbor Port Julius, or Iulius, after Octavian's assassinated great-uncle, Dictator Gaius Julius Caesar.

There was strong support for the naval brigade and in 1864 it consisted of five companies, four in Sydney and one in Newcastle, with an overall strength of 200 men. The naval brigade headquarters was established at Fort Macquarie, where the Sydney Opera House today stands. Since Spitfire was sold to Queensland in 1859, the naval brigade had no ships of their own. This problem was not rectified until the late 1870s, when the government ordered the construction of two second class torpedo boats, Avernus and Acheron; these vessels were constructed in Sydney.

The people of Oldorando learn to domesticate and breed hoxneys, horse-like animals which have emerged with the coming of the Great Spring. The ability to ride hoxneys and use them to power simple machinery triggers a great societal revolution, and Oldorando expands rapidly. As the climate improves and people begin to travel more widely, the city's location makes it an attractive hub, and it develops into a trading centre. Observers from Earth, orbiting Helliconia in the space station Avernus, watch the coming of the Great Spring with interest.

At the bath complex at Baiae, there are remains of a collapsed dome spanning , called the "Temple of Venus", and a larger half-collapsed dome spanning called the "Temple of Diana". The dome of the "Temple of Diana", which may have been a nymphaeum as part of the bath complex, can be seen to have had an ogival section made of horizontal layers of mortared brick and capped with light tufa. It dates to the second half of the 2nd century and is the third largest dome known from the Roman world. The second largest is the collapsed "Temple of Apollo" built nearby along the shore of Lake Avernus.

The abbreviation D.M. at the top of this 3rd-century Christian tombstone stands for Diis Manibus, "to the Spirits of the Dead" Manes may be derived from "an archaic adjective manus—good—which was the opposite of immanis (monstrous)".. Roman tombstones often included the letters D.M., which stood for diis manibus, "for the ghost-gods" or figuratively translated, "for the Manes", an abbreviation that continued to appear even in Christian inscriptions. The Manes were offered blood sacrifices. The gladiatorial games, originally held at funerals, may have been instituted in the honor of the Manes. The Cumaean Sibyl prophesied by “singing the fates” and writing on oak leaves. These would be arranged inside the entrance of her cave, but if the wind blew and scattered them, she would not help to reassemble the leaves and recreate the original prophecy. The Sibyl was a guide to the underworld (Hades), whose entrance lay at the nearby crater of Avernus. The two diseases are caused by the same virus, which is carried by ticks and is triggered by seasonal changes in the environment. The humans therefore have a symbiotic relationship with the virus and — unknowingly — with the phagors, who carry the ticks and hence the virus. Some rare people in remote areas are immune to the virus; these are considered ugly pariahs by the majority of the population, as they are horribly fat or thin compared to the prevailing standard. The virus, while essential for human survival on Helliconia, is fatal year-round to the Earth- humans aboard Avernus, who have no natural defenses against it.

In the late 15th century DR, almost a century after the events of Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, the forces of darkness are on the rise. The player character has been taken captive by the mind flayers, who have launched an invasion of Faerûn, and implanted with an illithid tadpole, a parasite capable of enthralling and transforming them into another mindflayer. Before the mind flayers can transform their victims, the nautiloid flying ship they are all aboard comes under attack from githyanki warriors and flees through multiple realms, including Avernus, the first of the Nine Hells. The player character is freed during the fighting and steers the damaged ship back to Faerûn, where it crashes.

In 2017, Green Ronin Publishing released a setting book written by Mercer, the Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting, which focused on the continent of Tal'Dorei on Exandria, where the first Critical Role campaign with adventuring group Vox Machina took place. In 2020, after Mercer had been working with Wizards of the Coast for about a year and a half on the project, Exandria officially became a part of Dungeons & Dragons through the release of the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount.

River Aire, near Appleby, Yorkshire, by Joseph Clayton Bentley Bentley's engravings included plates for the publications of Fisher, Son & Co.; George Virtue, for whose Gems of European Art, he engraved The Fountain after Francesco Zuccarelli, and A Sunny Day after Cuyp; and for The Art Journal. He also produced work for the Vernon Gallery: The Brook by the Way, after Thomas Gainsborough; Lake Avernus, after Richard Wilson; The Valley Farm after John Constable; The Windmill, after John Linnell; The Way to Church, after Thomas Creswick; and The Wooden Bridge, the Port of Leghorn, and Sea-shore in Holland, after Augustus Wall Callcott. He worked quickly, and was exceptionally prolific. Bentley continued to paint in parallel with his career as an engraver.

In late September 2016, the band announced that Max Karon from heavy metal ensemble I of Tongues has joined them on guitar. In December 2017, the band indicated that they were working on a new album. In late February to mid March 2018 the band were set to tour Australia with supports from In Death..., Rise of Avernus and Hollow World which ended up being cancelled due to the sacking of manager of Sydney venue The Bald Faced Stag who founded the touring company Stag Music Touring for allegedly not paying bands who performed at the venue for over several months. This put the touring company in jeopardy and they worked hard to find a replacement but there was not enough time to do so which led to its cancellation.

Pluto and Proserpina in The Merchant's Tale have been seen as Shakespeare's model for Titania and Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream, a view at least as old as Chaucer's editor Thomas Tyrwhitt (see 1798 edition) and reiterated by Walter William Skeat in his edition of The Canterbury Tales ( 1894 edition). The Scottish poet William Dunbar ca. 1503 also described Pluto as a folkloric supernatural being, "the elrich incubus / in cloke of grene" ("the eldritch incubus in cloak of green"), who appears among the courtiers of Cupid.William Dunbar, The Goldyn Targe (1503), lines 126–7, as cited by Ian Simpson Ross, William Dunbar (Brill, 1981), p. 252. Compare also Arthur Golding's "elves of hell" to translate Ovid's Avernales ... nymphas, "nymphs of Avernus" (Metamorphoses 5.670, in his account of the abduction).

The dyne-field connects planets and yet seems to merge them, the decayed industrial wasteland "Carter's Snort" in Britain merges with the slums of Junk City on Avernus. These worlds are stagnant, controlled by corrupt politics, organised crime and the bizarre "Opener" religion, who see "honesty of bodily function [as] the sole valid praise of God." These landscapes are Truck's natural home and a hiding place from General Alice Gaw of the Israeli World Government and Colonel Gadaffi ben Barka of the United Arab Socialist Republics. (True to the strong vein of Anarchism in Harrison's work, neither of these political entities resemble their twentieth century counterparts.) Truck is being hunted because of his ancestry, as he is half-Centauran (the rest of his race having been killed by human bombing some decades earlier) and the only person who can activate the newly unearthed Centauri Device.

Musco's Tehom incorporates deep heavenly waters bursting with life and dark spirals of humanity propelled together with grace and tension–some floating and others fighting to make contact and engage the viewer. Two years in production, the show includes Musco's photo installation Hadal (which was shown at the 53rd Annual Venice Biennale in 2009, presented by the Moscow Museum of Modern Art), a swirling vortex of two thousand bodies reminiscent of a floating nest or a school of fish, each a recurring theme of his work; Avernus, which explores human forms in natural constructions and depicts not the vast open sea but rather an inland lake, one supposed by the Romans to be the entrance to Hades; Progeny, an 8’ x 8’ bundle of limbs and torsos floating like a giant human egg; and Sibille, a triptych of eleven women breaking the surface of the water with an otherworldly attitude that directly references not only Greek mythology, but Musco's numerological reference to his time in the womb. Since its debut, Tehom has been internationally exhibited and admired, and its first edition is now part of the permanent collection of Maison Particulière Art Centre in Brussels, Belgium.
