On 18 December 2003, Reserve Bank of India was rocked by one of the most sensational frauds in its history, when Uma Subramaniam, the then Regional Director of RBI, Bhopal, received a call from a person claiming to be a relative of the Governor Dr Y V Reddy, who "badly needed Rs 20 lakh in cash". Without verifying the identity of the caller, Uma Subramaniam arranged the money by asking her employees to immediately withdraw their cash. Subramaniam herself went in an autorickshaw and handed over the cash to the unknown person, who quietly walked away. Later it was discovered that the "Governor's relative" was an impostor.

In Mumbai and other metropolitan cities, 'autos' or 'rickshaws', as they are popularly known, have regulated metered fares. A recent law prohibits auto rickshaw drivers from charging more than the specified fare, or charging night-fare before midnight, and also prohibits the driver from refusing to go to a particular location. Mumbai and Kolkata are also the only two cities which prohibit auto rickshaws from entering a certain part of the city, in these cases being South Mumbai and certain parts of Downtown Kolkata. However, in cities like Chennai, it is common to see autorickshaw drivers demand more than the specified fare and refuse to use fare meter.

Masonda Ketada Olivier was a Congolese national who died after being assaulted in the Indian city of New Delhi on the night of 22 May 2016. Olivier had been in New Delhi as a student, and also taught French in a language school in the city. On the night of his death, he is said to have been returning from a party with his friends, and attempted to hail an autorickshaw in the Vasant Kunj suburb of Delhi when he got into an altercation with some local men, who then assaulted Olivier. He was rescued by another group of local people and taken to AIIMS, but succumbed to his injuries on the way.

On 2017, Shakib Khan was sued with fraud and defamation of 5 million for using the personal mobile number of a man named Ijazul Mia of Habiganj, Bangladesh, in a dialogue for the film Rajneeti. The film's director Bulbul Biswas and producer Ashfaq Ahmed were also charged in the same case. Autorickshaw driver Ijazul Mia filed the case in Habiganj Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court in Habiganj on 29 October 2016. Ijazul Mia mentioned in the charge sheet of the case that, actress Apu Biswas said while giving a dialogue in a sequence of the film Rajneeti (26 minutes and 12 seconds of the film), 'I will not let go of my dream prince again and again.

An auto is a three-wheeler vehicle for hire that does not have doors and is generally characterised by a small cabin for the driver in the front and a seat for passengers in the rear. Generally it is painted in yellow, green or black colour and has a black, yellow or green canopy on the top, but designs vary considerably from place to place. The color of the autorickshaw is also determined by the fuel that it is powered by, for example Agartala, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune and Delhi have green or black autos indicating the use of compressed natural gas(CNG), whereas the autos of Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad have green autos indicating the use of LPG.

His anger increases when his daughter has been arrested for staging a protest, during the time he meets his friends every evening inside the vacant shop and they bond every night over a few drinks. Bhujanga sees a prostitute Susheela (Priyamani) and wants to bond with her, however despite his intentions Bhujanga gets scared fearing that his reputation will be tarnished. During one such evening, Shiva (Satyadev Kancharana / Aravind Kuplikar) an auto rickshaw driver and a friend of Rajeeva brings the prostitute and locks her along with Bhujanga inside the vacant shop promising to unlock the shop shutter after they spend some time together inside the locked shop. Meanwhile, Shiva meets one of his passengers, a film director (Prudhviraj / Achyuth Kumar), who had forgotten his bag in Shiva's autorickshaw that morning.
