Generalleutnant Wilhelm Falley, commander of 91st Infantry Division, was trying to return to his headquarters near Picauville from war games at Rennes when he was killed by a paratrooper patrol. Two hours before the main invasion force landed, a raiding party of 132 members of 4th Cavalry Regiment swam ashore at 04:30 at Îles Saint- Marcouf, thought to be a German observation post. It was unoccupied, but two men were killed and seventeen wounded by mines and German artillery fire. Once the four troop transports assigned to Force U reached their assigned position off the coast, 5,000 soldiers of 4th Division and other units assigned to Utah boarded their landing craft in rough seas for the three-hour journey to their designated landing point.

While other divisions of the IX Corps attacked and were repulsed, the 29th in the 1st Division moved to its assigned position in the late afternoon and received the order to attack. The division, including the 29th, charged from their protected position in a ravine out into an open plain in front of the Confederate entrenchments. According to the regimental historian, "They had scarcely emerged upon the open plain, when the whole crest of the Confederate works was fringed with fire and smoke; grape, canister, and musket balls filled the air.". The 29th was forced to pause in its advance and retired a short distance. She reached Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 22d, received post- shakedown repairs, and conducted further trials that lasted until 1 October, when she put to sea to join the Fleet. She fell in with her sister ship the next day, and the two ships reached Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on the 5th, where Aylwin unloaded a cargo of light freight. After transiting the Panama Canal on 7 October, she paused briefly at Balboa, Panama Canal Zone, before sailing on the 10th for a plane-guard station off Champerico, Guatemala, to provide a directional bearing along the projected track of the experimental flying boat XP3Y-1, the prototype of the PBY Catalina. Aylwin reached her assigned position on 13 October and, the next morning, began laying smoke to serve as marker for the plane.

Boer resistance lasted far longer than the British had envisaged, with peace not being agreed until May 1902, and until then the SAC was involved in military rather than policing duties, being engaged in field operations and on blockhouse lines. Once hostilities were over, each troop took up its assigned position in the two new colonies as soon as possible. In this way a network of posts and patrols was established in a very short space of time. With the SAC patrolling in every direction, including the Portuguese and Tongaland frontiers, they also visited all the farms at least once a week. At the same time, all assets of Nahuelsat S.A. were being transferred to the newly formed ARSAT S.A.. By 2006, Nahuelsat had failed to put a satellite in its second assigned position, 81° West, and had not even ordered a replacement for Nahuel 1A. So the Argentine Government created ARSAT which accepted to assume all Nahuelsat obligations in exchange for all assets of the company. Four of these six men had, at their assigned position, to crouch inside a high space between the roof and the tank's floor. They then had to stand within two narrow troughs, one, behind the driver's seat, used by the gunner and a second square one more to the back, between the suspension elements, used by the cannon loader and the two machine gunners. On 22 August, after taking on fuel from , the attack cargo ship got underway for the Philippines as part of 5th Fleet's Amphibious Group 8 and arrived at Guiuan Roadstead off Samar on the 29th. She then sailed for Manila on 4 September and reached that port late on the 6th. Three days later, Birgit sailed for Lingayen Gulf, routed via Subic Bay, and anchored off Aringay Point on 10 September. There, she loaded 785 tons of ammunition, vehicles, gasoline, and rations, completing the evolution early on the 15th. She then embarked 225 men of the Army's 33d Infantry Division. Birgit took part in a landing rehearsal at Aringay Point on the 17th and then sailed for Japan on the 20th. Birgit navigated the 600 yard swept channel passing through Kii Suido between Shikoku and Honshū and arrived off Wakayama before dawn on 25 September. Reaching her assigned position off the beachhead at 06:23, Birgit lowered her landing craft, getting them all waterborne within 10 minutes. Then, she proceeded to the inner anchorage area, where she anchored at 10:25.
