Together, Kirk and Spock engage the Gorn on away missions, travel to another universe and re-take Enterprise when it is captured by alien forces. This two-character gameplay was seen as a unique element, referred to as "bro-op". The Gorn, who previously appeared in The Original Series and Star Trek: Enterprise, were heavily redesigned, with fifteen different classes of creatures created. A replica of the Gorn costume from "Arena" appeared in a viral advertisement alongside William Shatner, which was intended as a homage to the fight between Kirk and the Gorn from that episode.

Swanwick admits having written it both as a homage to J.R.R. Tolkien and in reaction to a handful of writers he claims exploit Tolkien's milieu and the readers' imaginations with derivative, commercial fantasy: The dragon Melanchthon is named after German theologian Philipp Melanchthon, an associate of Martin Luther. Further references to Lutheranism can be found in Swanwick's novel Jack Faust. Excerpts from The Dragons of Babel have periodically been published as short stories.
An iconic scene in A Cross The Universe happens in Las Vegas where, as a homage to US hard rock singer Axl Rose, Gaspard marries a groupie whom he had met three hours previously. During a DJ tour for the release of A Cross the Universe in November 2008, controversy arose when a photograph of Augé DJing with an unplugged Akai MPD24 surfaced. The photograph sparked accusations that Justice's live sets were faked. Augé has since said that the equipment was unplugged very briefly before being reattached and the band put a three-photo set of the incident on their MySpace page.
The single's picture sleeve contains a photo by Brian Cannon. He intended the cover as a homage to the incident where Ringo Starr, having briefly left the Beatles in 1968 during the recording of the White Album, was persuaded to return and George Harrison decorated Starr's drum kit in red, white and blue flowers to show their appreciation. The B-side "Step Out" was originally intended for the (What's the Story) Morning Glory? album but was taken off after Stevie Wonder requested 10 per cent of the royalties as the chorus bore a similarity to his hit "Uptight (Everything's Alright)".
As a homage to his predecessor, Humphreys campaigned for the creation of the Morton Memorial Chemistry Laboratory and commissioned a book on Stevens' founding and its early years to be named in his honor. These initiatives were but foreshadowing of the growth Humphreys would bring to Stevens. By 1924 the campus grew from just over a city block to 23-acres, enrollment quadrupled and endowment grew to $2,864,000 (from $384,800 when Humprheys took office). That year also marked the successful end of the "Million Dollar Campaign," which had attracted donations from alumni as well as George Eastman and Edward Harkness.
He is possessed of extreme arrogance, yet has a deep insight into his own character and epitomizes the melancholy of the Romantic hero who broods on the futility of existence and the certainty of death. Pechorin's whole philosophy concerning existence is oriented towards the nihilistic, creating in him somewhat of a distanced, alienated personality. The name Pechorin is drawn from that of the Pechora River, in the far north, as a homage to Alexander Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, named after the Onega River. Pechorin treats women as an incentive for endless conquests and does not consider them worthy of any particular respect.
"Seven Spanish Angels" was the most successful of Charles' eight hits on the country chart. The single spent one week at number one and a total of twelve weeks on the country chart. Setser had suggested the title "Seven Spanish Angels" and he and Seals had written the song as a homage to the tejano flavored classic hits of Marty Robbins exemplified by Robbins' career record "El Paso" (Troy Seals quote): "When we finished it we thought 'Who in the world's gonna do it?' because Marty was [deceased]." Within two days "Seven Spanish Angels" had been successfully pitched to Willie Nelson.
The gesture seems to have been borrowed from Dr. Rex, a character in "Number 12 Looks Just Like You," an episode of The Twilight Zone. Dr. Evil occasionally uses unnecessary air quotes around now-familiar technical terms such as "laser". The scar on his face is a reference to similar scars on early 20th century movie villains, such as several portrayed by Erich von Stroheim (as well as a homage to Donald Pleasence as Blofeld in You Only Live Twice). This type of scar is usually a remnant of Mensur fencing, an activity in which European student groups participate.

Disney kept The Sorcerer's Apprentice in the final program as a homage to Fantasia.Bonus Material: The Making of Fantasia 2000 at 32:35–32:49 The segment underwent digital restoration by Cinesite in Los Angeles. Disney considered using Clair de Lune, a piece originally made for Fantasia that followed two Great white herons flying through the Everglades at night, but thought it was "pretty boring". An idea to have "a nightmare and a dream struggling for a sleeping child's soul" to Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Sergei Rachmaninoff was fully storyboarded, but fell through.
Palapa, the series of communication satellites owned by Telkom Indonesia, an Indonesian telecommunication company, was named after Sumpah Palapa, the famous oath taken by Gajah Mada, who swore that he would not taste any spice as long as he had not succeeded in unifying Nusantara (Indonesian archipelago). This ancient oath of unification signifies the Palapa satellite as the modern means to unify the Indonesian archipelago by way of telecommunication. The name was chosen by the president Suharto, and the program was started in February 1975. Pura Kawitan Majapahit was built in 1995 as a homage to honour the empire that inspires the nation.
Though the cultivated taste of the Renaissance affected to despise the medieval stories, it adopted them with alterations as a homage to classical antiquity. Hence came the cycle of the "Palmerins" and the Chronica do Emperador Clarimundo of João de Barros. The medieval romance of chivalry gave place to the pastoral novel, the first example of which is the Saudades of Bernardim Ribeiro, followed by the Diana of Jorge de Montemayor, a Portuguese writer who wrote in Spanish. Later in the sixteenth century Gonçalo Fernandes Trancoso, a fascinating storyteller, produced his Historias de Proveito e Exemplo.
Numerous albums have subsequently followed, both in the retail and production music areas, and likewise many sessions, both on guitar, pedal steel and other instruments, including banjo, mandolin, ukulele and harmonica. Subsequently, the French chemist Paul Emile Lecoq de Boisbaudran pointed out that Linnemann's findings could also be attributed to gallium, an element which had been described by Lecoq himself in 1875. Finally, Richard Pribram from the University of Czernowitz set out to settle the question. He was able to conclude that Linnemann's austrium did not constitute a new element but was – as already presumed by Lecoq – nothing but gallium. At the same time Pribram himself surmised that he might have found unidentified spectral lines of yet another new element, for which he as a homage to Linnemann again proposed the name austrium.
Cartoonist Ruben Bolling occasionally satirizes Trump's use of John Barron in comics titled Donald and John: A Boy and His Imaginary Publicist. It is drawn as a homage to the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, about a boy with a rich fantasy life. In season 3, episode 5 of The Good Fight that airs on CBS All Access a character places a fake call to The Wall Street Journal using the name John Barron. Barlow described the song as a "homage to the early years", whilst Owen said it's "the song your dad would write if he was trying to get down with the kids." "If You Want It" is described as a "90s sounding pop banger with big production and an uplifting chorus", again produced by Kurstin. A line in the song, "Everything could be a little bit brighter", is suggested to be a nod to the band's recent struggles. Barlow said that a video for the song could be reminiscent of the early years of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.

On the front square of the Philharmonic has been built in the 1970s an organ- shaped fountain.
From 1865 to 1870, Morris worked on another epic poem, The Earthly Paradise. Designed as a homage to Chaucer, it consisted of 24 stories, adopted from an array of different cultures, and each by a different narrator; set in the late 14th century, the synopsis revolved around a group of Norsemen who flee the Black Death by sailing away from Europe, on the way discovering an island where the inhabitants continue to venerate the ancient Greek gods. Published in four parts by F. S. Ellis, it soon gained a cult following and established Morris' reputation as a major poet.
Skyscraping is the seventh studio album by English pop band ABC, released in March 1997 by Blatant and Deconstruction. The album was produced as a homage to lead singer Martin Fry's several musical heroes, including David Bowie, Roxy Music and the Sex Pistols. It is their first album without founding member, keyboardist and guitarist Mark White, who had up until that point been heavily involved in the composition and production of their work. As the line- up of ABC without White consisted solely of Fry, Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17 and Keith Lowndes were brought in as songwriting and performance collaborators.
Warren was approached by Maxine Julius to make a horror film for her and developed the plot over seven days with line producer Hayden Pearce. Bloody New Year was meant as a homage to 1950s B movies, the film being set on an island trapped in a time warp where it is always New Year's Eve, 1959. Originally the entire film was to have been set in the 1950s, but this idea was abandoned due to budget constraints. According to Warren, the premise was inspired by the real-life contamination of a Scottish island as the result of a failed disease control experiment.
The album was originally going to be called "Noches Cálidas en Bares y Fondas" (Warm Nights in Bars and Taverns), based on the places where the band hung out and played, but in the end it was decided to use the shorter name, with the same meaning. The singles of the album were the energetic "Yo Quiero Morirme Aca" ('I Want to Die Here'), the nervous "Silencio Hospital" ('Be Quiet, This is a Hospital') and the ballad "Basta de Llamarme Asi" ('Stop Calling Me That', a song composed by Vicentico as a homage to his defunct sister Tamara).

In its seven-and-a-half-minute original form, the song only reached number 77 on the UK Singles Chart (although it did make number eight in John Peel's Festive Fifty of that year). After experiencing success as part of the Madchester music scene, a new version was released in March 1991 that was shorter and with new lyrics.

The colors were chosen as a homage to the Florida State Seminoles, as the school's football helmets are embellished with a spear, as well as the color scheme selected by the ballots cast. In 2009, the helmet emblem was revised and now proudly displayed is a tomahawk with the word "Chiefs" written over it. This was done to give Northview High its own unique identity; one that all can be proud of. Rather than accepting business offers to use his Idol fame to release a quick pop album, Lewis decided to work on his own musical style and create original music. From late 2004 to 2006, Lewis spent the majority of his time composing original music working closely with music producer Alex Gibson of Henson Recording Studios, among other notable entities in Hollywood. "Turn to Grey" was among the first songs that he wrote; he composed it while on tour with the Idol finalists. Jon recorded part of the song as a homage to Jennifer Hudson after she told him that she loved singing the song around her house.

Into the Wilderness is the last chapter of the book. It gives an idea of the challenges the Coalition Provisional Authority has faced in that country, and reports on the assassination of the Lebanese Prime- Minister Rafiq Hariri, witnessed by Fisk. The book ends, as it has begun, in the "tiny village of Louvencourt, on the Somme," where Robert Fisk's father has fought. This is not only meant as a homage to Bill Fisk, but is also an implicit reminder of one of the leitmotifs of the book: the volatile situation in the Middle East is a consequence of the political arrangements concluded at the end of the First World War.
Both songs were composed as a homage to disco music, with the latter single being regarded as a gay anthem. Williams and Chambers also wrote the pop/rock track "Kids" initially as a solo single for Minogue, however Robbie Williams became quite fond of the song that he instead altered it to be a duet. "Kids" was released in October, 2000 as the second single from Williams' album Sing When You're Winning and as the third single from Minogue's Light Years. While the majority of the album's songs were original recordings, Minogue did cover the Barry White disco song "Under the Influence of Love".

The next, "Born This Way" is about how everybody is equal, regardless of skin color, sexuality, or creed, and that every person can fulfill his or her dream.
Early concept art of SpaceGodzilla The character was designed as a homage to the monster's hinted progenitor Biollante by incorporating tusks and a hissing roar reminiscent of the latter monster. Creature designer Shinji Nishikawa had initially envisioned SpaceGodzilla as a much more Western dragon-like creature with large fin-like wings on the back.David Milner, "Shinji Nishikawa Interview", Kaiju Conversations (December 1995) Other early designs for the proposed "Astrogodzilla" included it being an albino Godzilla with expensive wings, two tails, and the ability to fire an ice ray. The changing styles, as well as the occasional changes in camera angle and movement, were meant to "accentuate [the] gap between real, modern scenery and the fantasy world" as a tie-in to the game's story. The game was meant to appeal to older players; it was intended as an action-RPG for an older market than Square Enix's action- RPG series Kingdom Hearts. This influenced the decision to have a main character in his 30s, as well as more blood and swearing than typical in a Square Enix RPG. The fusion of different gameplay styles was included as a homage to earlier gameplay styles and genres.

Radioland Murders also shares some inspiration from The Big Clock (1948). When Universal Pictures accepted American Graffiti in 1972, Lucas also allowed the studio first-look deals for both Radioland Murders and an untitled science fiction film (which eventually became the basis for Star Wars).
In late 1972, Wakelin wrote and recorded the original version of the song, under the title "Hungarian Superman (Joe Bugner)" as an homage to the Hungarian-born British-Australian boxer by that name. The single failed to chart, and in 1973 Bugner lost 12-round decisions to former heavyweight champions Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Wakelin got the idea of reworking the original song as a homage to Bugner's rival, the boxing champion Muhammad Ali who fought on 30 October 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire, against George Foreman in a matchup known as The Rumble in the Jungle. Ali gained victory in the eighth round.
Budget constraints kept the film from being released for years, but it eventually saw the light of day in 1999 under the title, Violent Shit III: Infantry of Doom (or Zombie Doom in the US). Andreas also played the killer, Karl, in all three films. His following film was Der Kelch - Goblet of Gore of 1996, although various issues kept it shelved until 2005. As a homage to Italian director Joe D'Amato, he then remade the classic slasher film, Anthropophagous, changing the title to Anthropophagous 2000 (1999). It was also in 1999 that Andreas began preparing for his next film, which he would release as his “millennium shocker”.
Robert Moresby, during his survey of the Maldives in 1834, named a small atoll south of Southern Maalhosmadulhu Atoll after James Horsburgh as a homage to his valuable previous hydrographic work. Horsburgh Island in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands is also named after him as is the Horsburgh Lighthouse, located on Pedra Branca, Singapore, the construction of which was funded by a group of British merchants in Canton, China (now Guangzhou). Horsburgh was the first to document the island now known as Spratly Island, naming it Storm Island. However, Richard Spratly's sighting eventually become the vernacular and led to the naming of the entire region as the Spratly Islands.

The following year, Angham conceived Awal Gawab (The First Answer), her second record, as a homage to Egyptian soul music composer, Sayed Makkawy, and she worked with a variety of lyricists on the record. Sayed Makkawy gave her the copyrights of his song "Aalo Enseeh" ("They Said Forget Him") to add it to the record. The Awal Gawab record was released soon after her debut record but was neither critically nor commercially as successful. "Awal Gawab" and "Hawa elMasayef" ("Summer Love") were her most successful tracks on this record. During 1988, although she occasionally performed live, stage fright prevented Angham from embarking on any major tours.

The other narratives focused on different themes: Mercedes' storyline focused on her maturation into a queen, Velvet's story focused on resolving a mystery, while Cornelius' story narrative modeled after traditional fairy tales as a homage to the early PC game Marchen Veil. As with his other projects, Kamitani included strong female characters, as he felt a woman pushed into summoning the courage to fight deserved victory. There were plans to create backstory elements for characters like Odin and an extra book focusing on Ingway, but the negative impact those elements would have resulted in them being cut. Originally planned to have just an hour and a half of voiced dialogue, the final total was over five hours.
After the Paraguayan War, Paraguay with its population devastated and poor, was receiving European immigrants, who were given land for the agricultural production and cattle breeding. Around 1890, Belgium immigrants founded the Belgium Colony of Mbocayaty, later added by French and Italian people around 1880 and 1890. As time went by the inhabitants of the colony began to work in agricultural, specially in the production of fruit. Later the Belgium people migrated to the properties of a Danish person Emilio Johansen, and later on around 1896, the city became Colonia Elisa, as a homage to his wife, Ms Elisa Von Poleski, of an aristocratic German origin (later a street in the city will also have her name).
As a homage to the original Mega Man series, each Navi has a musical theme, and most of them are rearrangements of the themes used for their Robot Master counterparts in the original games. For example, IceMan's theme is a remixed version of his stage theme from the very first Mega Man game released on the NES. These themes play on the PET menu interface for each Navi, and some Navis have additional remixes of the same themes used for mini-games unique to them. Furthermore, Navis like Roll (who did not have themes from the original games) or ThunderMan (who was created specifically for the Battle Network series) receive new themes for this game.
Vicente Bacallar y Sanna (as in the Spanish and Sardinian use, with both the father's and the mother's surnames) was a military officer and politician who supported Philip of Anjou, the heir appointed by the last Habsburg king Charles II, in the War of the Spanish Succession. For this reason, he had to flow in exile when the other claimant, Charles of Austria, took control over Sardinia. As an award to Bacallar's loyalty, Philip, now Philip V of Spain, made him Viscount of Fuente Hermosa and Marquess of St. Philip (as a homage to his own patron saint). Bacallar became later an important historian, linguist and political philosopher while still serving as military and diplomat.
With arrangement by Yuyoyuppe, "Babymetal Death" begins with a symphonic intro, building up to a death metal number as voices shout out the phrase, letter by letter "Babymetal Death!!". The pun found in the name derives from the Japanese devoicing of the "/u/" sound, which is exploited in the word "death" (desu). As a result, the phrase can be read as "We are Babymetal" (Babymetal desu), which the band members used in the early years. Originally, the song in its original form released as a special feature from the "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!" single, was originally one second long, as a homage to the Napalm Death song "You Suffer", and was used as a final song to close performances for a while.
Blackburn's distinctive acidic vocals are a trademark of the band, and they are also known for wearing surgical masks and costumes while performing, as well as in promotional photos. The band are known to wear different costumes depending on the circumstances of the show: for example, an outdoors show would have them in Hawaiian shirts, while indoor shows would have them in their trademark scrubs. During an interview, Blackburn reveals the sound of the album the band are promoting while touring has an effect on their attire while performing. Ade Blackburn has said in an interview that Clinic wear surgical masks on stage as a homage to San Francisco bands Crime and The Residents.
It is often composed of a white layer covering a person's face with black details on top, often in the shape of crosses or around the eyes. Bands such as Cradle of Filth and Kiss have stated that this has been born as a homage to early silent black-and- white horror movies. Black metal fans also sport goatees, all black outfits, leather jackets (sometimes with black and white band patches sewed on), spikes, jewelry, facial piercings and boots. Power metal fans and musicians such as Rhapsody of Fire often wear attire reminiscent of the Renaissance and the Middle Ages including tight black or brown leather trousers and wide sleeved, buttonless shirts of various colors.
Recorded in the summer of 1974, during breaks between sessions for Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, the song was at the time the only song Elton John and Bernie Taupin had ever consciously written as a single, as John told journalist Paul Gambaccini. John was looking to honour Billie Jean King, and so asked Taupin to write a song called "Philadelphia Freedom" as a homage to her tennis team, the Philadelphia Freedoms. In His Song: The Musical History of Elton John, Elizabeth Rosenthal recounts that Taupin said, "I can't write a song about tennis," and did not. Taupin maintains that the lyrics bear no relation to tennis, Philly Soul, or even flag-waving patriotism.
"Angel of Harlem" is a song by Irish rock band U2. It is the tenth track on their 1988 studio album Rattle and Hum, and was released as its second single in December 1988. It topped the charts in Canada and New Zealand, and peaked at number nine on the UK Singles Chart, number eight on the Dutch Top 40, number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number one on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Written as a homage to Billie Holiday, it was released with two different B-sides; one was an original U2 song called "A Room at the Heartbreak Hotel," while the other was a live version of Rattle and Hums "Love Rescue Me".
They initially wore a black and gold scroll as a shoulder sleeve insignia, but that insignia was later redesignated the Ranger Tab and the Rangers adopted a black, red and white scroll similar to that unofficially worn by Ranger Battalions in World War II. Soon after arriving in Korea, the unit took to the nickname "Buffalo Rangers," which U.S. newspapers had applied to the unit as a homage to the Buffalo Soldiers. "Buffalo" subsequently became both the division's motto as well as its password for patrols upon their return to company lines. The 2nd Ranger Company was the only Ranger company in the history of the U.S. Army to consist entirely of African-Americans.
The signature ride of the rally is the route on Highway 86 and includes the "Devil's Tail" on Hells Canyon Dam Road () between Oxbow, Oregon and Hells Canyon Dam, off the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. The Devil's Tail is a nickname bestowed by 2008 rally attendees on a twisty segment of the road as a homage to the "Tail of the Dragon" through Deal's Gap in North Carolina, another fine motorcycling road. Hells Canyon Dam on the "Devil's Tail" ride was one of the dams on DamTour, a long- distance rally organized by Steve Folkestad that attracted up to 80 riders to visit 20 dams in the Pacific Northwest and ran between 2004 and 2012.
The Eddie Graham Memorial Battle of the Belts was an annual professional wrestling memorial show produced by the Full Impact Pro (FIP) promotion, typically held between February or March. The event was held in memory of Eddie Graham, longtime promoter of the Florida wrestling territory, the first held for Graham since the original Eddie Graham Memorial Shows in 1987-88. The event's title, in particular, was used as a homage to the popular "Battle of the Belts" supercards promoted by Graham during the 1980s. Mike Graham, Eddie's son and organizer of the original "Eddie Graham Memorial Show", opened for the show to speak about his father's legacy and introduced the FIP Florida Heritage Championship.
It was also commercially successful; peaking at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching the Top 10 in several countries including Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, while topping the charts in Italy. The accompanying music video for "Deeper and Deeper" was directed by Bobby Woods. It was seen as a homage to American artist Andy Warhol and Italian director Luchino Visconti; it features Madonna playing a character based on Edie Sedgwick, who goes out to a nightclub to meet her friends and boyfriend. Madonna has performed "Deeper and Deeper" in three of her concert tours; the last being the Rebel Heart Tour (2015–16).
Quoted by Grahame C. Jones, in "Graham Greene and the Legend of Péguy", fn2, p. 139. The Swiss theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar, in the course of describing the history of art as an ongoing, sometimes more and sometimes less successful approximation of God's creativeness, noted that Peguy's Eve was a "theological redemption of the project of Proust", meaning that where Proust was gifted with memory and charity, the Eve of Peguy – not necessarily Peguy himself – was gifted with memory, charity, and direct knowledge of the redemption of God. Catholic University Press, 1998 Geoffrey Hill published a poem in 1983 as a homage to Péguy, entitled The Mystery of the Charity of Charles Péguy.Hill, Geoffrey (1985).
This quickly became the most popular choice and was the runaway winner when the poll closed, with 124,109 votes. The name has been described as a homage to "Hooty McOwlface", an owl named through an "Adopt-A-Bird" program in 2012 that became popular on the internet. On 6 May 2016, British science minister Jo Johnson announced that the choice had been made to name the ship after naturalist Sir David Attenborough, but that Boaty McBoatface would be the name of one of David Attenborough remotely controlled submersibles. A petition calling for Sir David Attenborough to change his name to Sir Boaty McBoatface "in the interest of democracy and humour" soon received over 3,800 signatures.
Rodney Mullen then named it the McTwist. The trick is derived from a combination of the "Mc" in McGill and the word "twist"—twist had previously been introduced by Lance Mountain and Neil Blender, with their invention of the "Gay twist" (a mute-grab, fakie 360-degree aerial). Inspired by the McTwist, McGill's teammate Tony Hawk invented a 720-degree aerial—a double Gay twist—and, as a homage to McGill, named it the "McHawk". The trick was groundbreaking when it was first executed and continues to be performed in the 21st century—snowboarding has also adopted the trick and Shaun White was filmed performing a double McTwist on a snowboard at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Cold Feets cast and crew were frequently praised for their depiction of real-life social issues on the series. When Cold Feet began, Christine Langan stated, "The real challenge was to overcome the traditional view that many of the issues we cover—jealousy, guilt, money, sexual problems, parental death—are ordinary issues, hardy perennials and, as such, not interesting enough for drama." The fourth episode of the first series was controversial due to its depiction of the characters freely discussing their sex lives; in the left-wing New Statesman, Andrew Billen praised it as a homage to La Ronde and, despite the sex-talk, being "intricately constructed as a farce".Billen, Andrew (4 December 1998).
It was conceived by the Publications Co-ordinator on the Green Party of England and Wales#Executive 25-year-old Matt Wootton in late Summer 2003. It was first used in a leaflet at the Green Party's Autumn Conference in Lancaster in 2003. The Real Progress phrase was based on a theme initiated by External Communications Co-ordinator 2000-2004 Dr Spencer Fitz-Gibbon. By the end of the year Wootton had employed graphic designer Jim Killock to unify the words Green Party and Real Progress in a single "badge" and the "lozenge" was born, inspired as a homage to the European Green Party's "rhomb" which Wootton and Killock considered clunky (see Wootton's homepage).
In April 2011, Azam, with Art Below, carried out a dual public art display in the Tokyo Metro and London Underground commuters saw a scene of Antarctica and one artist – a dot in the huge icy canvas. In July 2008 Azam completed two triptychs in zero gravity, done as a homage to the artist Francis Bacon. In February 2010, accompanied by a camera crew, Azam to draw inspiration from the frozen tundra of Antarctica where he endured extreme weather conditions to produce a series of large abstract oil paintings. For 2 weeks, Azam's work was on the billboard space of 2 platforms 6000 miles apart in Tokyo's Shibuya station and London's Liverpool Street Station with images of his Antarctica series.
Following the success of Legends Never Die, R.A. the Rugged Man announced he would begin working on a follow up project. The first single from the album, "Legendary Loser", produced by Psycho Les of The Beatnuts, was released on January 15, 2020 alongside visuals and confirmation of the project title. On April 13, 2020 an official trailer was released for the album. The visual promotion, produced by Thorburn, was created as a homage to various B-Movie action films of the 1980s, as well as Thorburn's own Bad Biology. HipHop Golden Age called All My Heroes Are Dead the best album of the year so far and called “Slayer Club” off the album the best posse cut of the year.
John Adams composed My Father Knew Charles Ives in 2003 as a musical autobiography and as a homage to the early 20th- century American composer Charles Ives, who has been one of Adams's major musical influences. Adams's father Carl Adams did not actually know Charles Ives, but the composer observed many similarities between the two men's lives, and between their lives and his own. In the score program notes, Adams wrote: He continued: The title, Adams observed, may have been unconsciously influenced by Morton Feldman's 1971 chamber piece I Met Heine on the Rue Fürstenberg. The music also contains quotes from "Reveille" and the hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee" in addition to many stylistic references to the music of Ives.
The bells of St Peter's, Aberdyfi can play Clychau Aberdyfi The folk song "Clychau Aberdyfi" ("The Bells of Aberdovey"), popularised in the 18th century, relates to the part of the legend about the bells being heard ringing beneath the waves in the town of Aberdyfi. This song inspired cultural projects in the town involving bells; a new chime of bells was installed in September 1936 in the tower St Peter's Church, Aberdyfi, specifically designed to allow the playing of The Bells of Aberdovey. An art installation by the sculptor Marcus Vergette, a bronze "Time and Tide Bell", was mounted beneath the jetty in Aberdyfi Harbour in July 2011 as a homage to the folk song. The bell is rung by the action of water at high tide.
The opera was first mooted in 1941 as a homage to Sergo Ordzhonikidze, a leading Bolshevik revolutionary, later a member of the CPSU Politburo and long-time close associate of Stalin, who in 1937 had shot himself anticipating arrest from his former friend, but whose death had at the time been given out as caused by heart failure. During the Russian Civil War, Ordzhonikidze, by birth (like Stalin) a Georgian, was a commissar for Ukraine, fighting the White Army under Anton Denikin. The opera, which is set during Ordzhonikidze's campaign against Denikin, appeared in the 1941 workplan of the Bolshoi Theatre with Muradeli named as composer; it was at that time named The Special Commissar (Чрезвычайный комиссар).Vlasova (2010), p. 223.
The Antonyo Awards were created in 2020 by Drew Shade and Darius Barnes, who were both in productions on Broadway before the shutdown of theatres due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Barnes in Mean Girls and Shade on the upcoming musical MJ. Shade founded Broadway Black in 2012, an organization that supports Black theatre and which helped produce the awards ceremony. Ross named the ceremony the "Antonyo Awards" as a homage to the Tony Awards. An additional purpose of the awards is to shed light on systemic racism in the New York theatre, a mostly-white institution, in the light of the racial protests that rocked America after the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others. No one was paid to participate in or run these awards.
Cheng's first screen appearance was in the 1998 film Money No Enough, and the following year he was cast in Liang Po Po: The Movie. Cheng was best known for portraying thuggish, brutal types prone to violence, as a homage to his alleged past career as a loan shark. I Not Stupid was a noticeable first reversal of this stereotypical role – he was cast in a minor role as a police officer tasked with rescuing hostages. Other stereotype role reversals included a minor role as a friend of the three men in That One Not Enough (also his first on-screen appearance without his beard), his portrayal of an effeminate hairdresser in 2004's I Do, I Do, and his last film role as a medium in the 2013 film Judgement Day.
A fan of heavy metal music, Yurnet adopted the ring name "Hammett" as a homage to Metallica's lead guitarist Kirk Hammett after a childhood friend recommend the name. Upon completing his training with Johhny Rivera (also known as Invader No. 3 from his days as an active wrestler), He started his career working on the independent circuit of Puerto Rico, in promotions including Xtreme Wrestling Entertainment (XWE) among others. He later entered the New Wrestling Stars (NWS) in 2005 and was a member of the stable "HP" with Ash, Livewire, and, later on, Stefano. Hammett became NWS's first Junior Heavyweight Champion after winning a tournament on March 26, 2006 but, after having problems with the company, soon vacated the title and left for the International Wrestling Association (IWA).
In October 2014, the film was announced as a Christmas special with Bill Murray to star and Sofia Coppola set to write and direct. In May 2015, the film was picked up by Netflix and was announced as a homage to classic variety shows and would be written by Murray, Mitch Glazer, and Coppola, and directed by Coppola. It was executive produced by Coppola, Glazer, Roman Coppola, and Tony Hernandez with Shaffer as the special's musical director and onscreen accompanist. The film is set at the Carlyle Hotel and its Bemelmans Bar."Bill Murray’s Little Christmas Miracle" by Ian Crouch, The New Yorker, December 4, 2015 Initially, rapper Rick Ross was scheduled to sing "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'" with Murray, but when Ross became unavailable, George Clooney filled in.
The original plan extended up to Euston Road but the Ministry of Defence would not release the site of a building they leased for use by the Territorial Army (and that still stands next to the Centre today). After failing to attract sufficient private buyers on time, the residential section was leased to the London Borough of Camden for use as council housing, while the developer retained ownership of the structure and shopping areas. The exterior of the building was never painted because the Borough could not afford to complete work on the building after they took control. In Hodgkinson's design, the blocks would have been painted cream, a shade typical of the Georgian period, as a homage to the terraced houses that previously stood on the site and those that still surround it.
270–271 Although critics were much less receptive to PopMart, in a 2009 interview, Bono said that he considers that tour to be their best: "Pop(Mart) is our finest hour. It's better than Zoo TV aesthetically, and as an art project it is a clearer thought." In 2005, during their Vertigo Tour, the group often played a short set of songs as a homage to the Zoo TV Tour—"Zoo Station", "The Fly", and "Mysterious Ways"—as part of the first encore; performances of "Zoo Station" included the interference in the background visual effects, and "The Fly" used flashing text effects on the LED screens similar to the Zoo TV visuals. Bono reprised the MacPhisto character during the band's 2018 Experience + Innocence Tour, using an augmented reality camera filter applied to his face.
Billy West provides the voice of Fry. Although Billy West stated in an interview that the name "Philip" was given to Fry by Matt Groening as a homage to the late Phil Hartman, for whom the role of Zapp Brannigan was created, Groening said during the 2013 Futurama panel at the San Diego Comic-Con that Fry was in fact named after Groening's father, Homer Philip Groening, who was also the namesake for Homer Simpson. According to Groening, Fry's character developed over time while still keeping his qualities as a loser and the characteristics which writers hoped would make him appeal to the target young male audience. Fry's character is essentially a bungling, stubborn slob with a heart of gold who cannot get ahead in the world, but still has a slight glimmer of hope.
The bullies then return Martin's ant farm, which they had used to blackmail him into working for them, but Martin is devastated to learn one of their ants has joined the bullies' cause. Later, he hangs himself by his underwear on a clothing hook, giving himself a wedgie after putting on his hall monitor sash (as a homage to the suicide in A Few Good Men as well as that of the character Walt Cummings on Season 5 of 24, who is murdered and has his death framed as a hanging). At the bake sale, the bullies start the three-minute timer for the bomb. Bart, still tied up, manages to contact Lisa by his cell phone, telling her to have Skinner dump the hot dog water to short circuit the ventilation fan.
Froome is an ambassador of United for Wildlife conservation project. His bikes since stage 13 of the 2015 Tour have a rhino graphic on the top tube as a way to show awareness for the plight of the animal, also as a homage to his African roots. He is a Global Ambassador for Best Buddies, an organisation based in Miami helping people with intellectual disabilities; a supporter of She Can He Can, a Monaco-based organisation supporting gender equality; and an ambassador for Ineos' "No Human is Limited" initiative. Froome also co-organised "The Race: Wheels for Heroes" charity virtual race with former cricket star Kevin Pietersen to raise money for Wheels for Heroes, an organisation helping to provide bikes to front-line workers battling the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom.
The footage from his voyage was handed over to Edgar Anstey, who pulled footage of when the camera had fallen over on the deck of the boat to create a storm scene. Granton Trawler was a favourite film of Grierson's, he saw it as a homage to the Isabella Greig that was sunk in 1941 by German bombs when it went out to fish and was never seen again. The Private Life of Gannets was also filmed on the Isabella Greig; the film was shot on Grassholm with Grierson shooting the slow-motion sequence of the gannets diving for fish which took only one afternoon to shoot near Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth. The Private Life of Gannets went on to pick up an Academy Award in 1937.
Balzaretti at Fiorentina Balzaretti was sold to Fiorentina in July 2007 for €3.8 million fee, but failed to adjust with the Viola as he made only six appearances in the first half of the Serie A 2007-08, and was subsequently signed by Palermo on a 3½-year contract in a permanent move (loan with an option to buy according to financial report) during the January transfer market, also for €3.8m (€1.27m for loan plus €2.53m). At Palermo, Balzaretti took the #42 jersey as a homage to his father, who was born in 1942; in his tenure with the Sicilian side, he immediately established himself as a mainstay, playing regularly for the rosanero also in the following seasons and establishing as one of the most praised Italian left backs. In January 2010, Balzaretti signed a new 3½-year contract.
McCartney II was described as an influence on Hot Chip's album Made in the Dark (2008), especially with songs like "Wrestlers", "Bendable Poseable", "Whistle for Will" and "We're Looking for a Lot of Love". "Now There Is Nothing" from the band's later album In Our Heads (2012) has been described as a homage to McCartney II, with their guitarist Al Doyle explaining the song has "quite deliberately quirky time signature changes and key changes and these sort of very wandering harmonies — very typical of that period and McCartney productions." Alexis Taylor of the group has described McCartney II as one of his favourite albums of all time. The album has also been championed by multiple other musicians such as disc jockey Erol Alkan, Chris Carter of Throbbing Gristle, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals and Ty Bulmer of New Young Pony Club.
13 Although the character had the working title of Zarqawi during the planning stages, Gamble insisted that the demon be female. She eventually suggested the mythological Lilith, who the writers had previously learned was in part the basis for the Bloody Mary legend in conducting their research for the first season episode "Bloody Mary". Writer Jeremy Carver said that the debate about what form Lilith would take quickly ended when the writers realized that a little girl "would be the most powerful representation of evil", which Kripke supported, saying, "I think it's just something about the innocence of a child saying truly awful, horror [sic] things." Much of Lilith's actions in "No Rest for the Wicked" served as a homage to the Twilight Zone episode "It's a Good Life", in which a powerful child terrorizes his town.
Initiated in 1999 by the Dhamma Society upon a request from abroad to support the publication of the B.E. 2500 (1957) Great International Council Pāḷi Tipiṭaka Edition in Latin script.Japan Times, "Thais Create Buddhist Studies Landmark" After a preliminary investigation of all the available electronic manuscripts, the Dhamma Society found that it was necessary to undertake anew the entire proof-reading and editing in Pāḷi language of the International Council Edition, both in printing and electronic formats. In 2004, the development of the electronic Pāḷi Tipiṭaka version was completed and was presented to Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Royal Matriarch of Thailand. In 2005, the printing project was finally completed and was published in Latin script in 40 volumes as a homage to the Buddha and in honour of the Buddhist Sovereign Monarchy of Thailand.
AAA has traditionally included a Relevos Atómicos de Locura, or "Atomic Madness" match as part of their major shows for years as a homage to AAA founder Antonio Peña who created the concept years prior. In a Relevos Atómicos de Locura match each team represents the four distinct type of wrestlers that work for AAA, Male, Female, Mini-Estrella and Exótico. While the match is a mixed-gender match there are no rules to limit the interaction between the teams so males wrestle females, Mini-Estrellas wrestle Exótico and so on. For the 2015 show AAA paired up Drago (male), Goya Kong (female), Dinastía (Mini-Estrella and AAA World Mini-Estrella Champion) and Pimpinela Escarlata (Exótico) on the 'tecnico side to take on Daga (male), Sexy Star (female), Mini Psycho Clown (Mini-Estrella) and Mamba (Exótico).
While planning for the massacre, Harris said in his journal that the killing would be "like playing Doom", and "it'll be like the LA riots, the Oklahoma bombing, World War II, Vietnam, Duke Nukem and Doom all mixed together", and that his shotgun was "straight out of the game". A rumor spread afterwards that Harris had designed a Doom level that looked like the high school, populated with representations of Harris's classmates and teachers, and that he practiced for the shootings by playing the level over and over. Although Harris did design custom Doom levels (which later became known as the 'Harris levels'), none have been found to be based on Columbine High School. In the earliest release versions, the level E1M4: Command Control contained a swastika-shaped structure, which was put in as a homage to Wolfenstein 3D.
The protagonists in the novel survive by striving (and succeeding) in escaping from "control dramas" that resemble the games of TA. The twelfth episode of the third season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is called "Games Ponies Play" as a homage to this work. Singer/songwriter Warren Zevon mentions transactional analysis in his 1980 song "Gorilla, You're a Desperado" from the album Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School. Singer-songwriter Joe South's 1968 song, "Games People Play", was based directly on transactional-analytic concepts and Berne's book of the same name. TA makes an appearance in Antonio Campos' 2016 biographical drama Christine, a film covering the events that led TV journalist Christine Chubbuck to commit suicide on TV. She is brought to a transactional analysis therapy session by a colleague, where they introduce her to the "Yes, But..." technique.
Pinhead redesign by Gary Tunnicliffe, as shown in Project Angel: Redesigning an Icon Gary Tunnicliffe, who was responsible for the Pinhead makeup in the last four films, improvised a new design for Pinhead called Project Angel: Recreating an Icon, the photos of which he published in Fangoria. Among Tunnicliffe's redesigns included the usage of square shafted nails for the iconic pins, which were meant to look rusted and handmade. He also designed the new Pinhead as wearing a white priest's robe rather than the original black leather, as a homage to the origins of the word "cenobite" which implies a religious connection. The redesign was criticised by Clive Barker as being too bloody: Pascal Laugier, who was set to write the remake wrote an online statement, stressing that Tunnicliffe's redesign was unauthorised, and that he himself had a very different design in mind.
Leabres is a Filipino-Australian who works as a "performance analyst" with the Cronulla Sharks of the NRL looking to develop rugby league in the Philippines. Only the Indang Rebels responded to Leabres' offer The name of the team was changed to "Central Luzon Crusaders" by Leabres as a homage to his family's home region of Central Luzon and the Clark City Crusaders, a Filipino- Australian team he played for at the Zambalez 9's which was organized by the Philippines National Rugby League. Asa Gorden one of the founding Papuan New Guinean students remarked that the "Rebels" name had "nothing special" and was satisfied of the prospect of joining the national rugby league and promoting the sport in the country. The team will participate at the finals of the 2016 Philippines National Rugby League Championship.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night had also become a critical and financial success over time, establishing that there was a desire by players for Metroidvania-style games. While both series continued to develop titles in this format, the concept of Metroidvanias started to gain more traction when other parties began to develop games in the same style. Cave Story (2004, Microsoft Windows) was developed by Daisuke Amaya as a homage to Metroid and other classic games; the game was critically praised showing the scope of what one person could do, and highlighted another take on the Castlevania and Metroid games, as well as vitalizing the 2D platformer genre as a viable indie game format. Shadow Complex (2009, Xbox 360) by Chair Entertainment was developed based on the premise that Super Metroid was "the pinnacle of 2D game design".
Isaura Teles Alves de Lima lagoon Parque Portugal, also known as Lagoa do Taquaral (), is an urban public park in the city of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. By the late 1990s, aspiring actor and writer Johnny Knoxville had moved from Knoxville to Los Angeles and landed work in commercials in order to support his wife and infant daughter. Among his ideas was to produce an article that involved testing various self-defense equipment on himself as a homage to his hero, gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. The magazines that contacted him refused to cover the story due to liability concerns, but in 1999, Knoxville was contacted by Big Brother, a skateboarding magazine for which Jeff Tremaine was an editor, and convinced Knoxville to do the stunt and film it. The stunt featured Knoxville testing out pepper spray, a stun gun, a taser, and a .38 caliber gun with a bulletproof vest, which was included in Big Brother video entitled Number 2, which also featured an appearance by future Jackass cast member Jason "Wee Man" Acuña.

Lauded for their 'blistering, trashy, punky glam rock sound', the band has been described as 'a homage to Psychedelic Rock/Punk Rock and Grunge of days gone by but ...with a fresh, modern twist.' Black Velvet Magazine praised their 'addictive songs with bounce and energy' and Artrocker wrote 'the band excel at peripherally gothic action rock'. Nina's 'sultry melodic' vocals have drawn favourable comparisons to Chrissie Hynde, Siouxsie Sioux and Patti Smith whist Louder Than War commented that Honey-Jones’ guitars provide an energetic binding agent that helps meld together goth, glam, grunge, punk and psychedelic sensibilities.' Vive Le Rock described 'Delirious Dream' as 'gorgeous yet nightmarish', and Devolution Magazine noted that To be able to take a sound that is recognisable from the 60’s ...and DeLorean it into something fit to please and thrill people well into the 2020’s and beyond is astonishing in itself.
In the wake of the Manchester Arena bombing, a resurgence of popularity and meaning for the single came as a homage to the victims of the event. Fans had started a petition to get the song to the top of the charts. The song re-entered strongly on the record charts across several nations including the UK, where it subsequently rose to a new peak of number two on the UK Singles Chart following the One Love Manchester benefit concert, as well as a new chart peak of number sixteen in Ireland, which was topped the week after by a chart move to number fifteen. It was certified platinum soon after, on June 9, 2017, by the BPI for selling over 600,000 copies, and then double platinum on February 23, 2018 for shipments of over 1.2 million copies in the country, her first single to do so.
In a June 1994 interview with Rebellion co-founder Jason Kingsley by ST Format, it was revealed that the game's title was now changed to Redline Racing, with Jason also stating that the game was created as a homage to Virtua Racing and that the lack of a two-player mode was due to the original commission by Atari Corp. to only create a driving title for only one player. The company's development team was expanded months earlier to assist with work on their internal projects, including artists Stuart Wilson, Toby Harrison-Banfield, and Justin Rae and programmers Robert Dibley, Mike Beaton and Andrew Whittaker, with both Justin working as a graphic designer and Robert as a programmer of Checkered Flag respectively. The game was now being advertised under its third name and was also showcased during SCES '94, with previews showcasing a different look compared to the final release.
Fellini was founded in 1984 by Cadão Volpato, Thomas Pappon and Celso Pucci (or Minho K.), being later joined by Jair Marcos and Ricardo Salvagni. The band's name was coined by Thomas Pappon during a brainstorm; he wanted the band to have a "weird, funny-sounding" name (in contrast to the "serious" and "gloomy" names Brazilian post-punk bands had at the time), and chose "Fellini" as a homage to The Stranglers' album Feline, one of Fellini's major influences alongside Joy Division and The Durutti Column.Interview with Jair Marcos, Thomas Pappon e Cadão Volpato Interview with Jair Marcos e Thomas Pappon Fellini performed their first show at the now-defunct Bar Albergue, in Bixiga; however, Minho K. could not play at the gig because he was drunk at the time, passed out and could not wake up. He left the band afterwards, and would form 3 Hombres alongside Jair Marcos years later.
In her essay "Oni and Japanese Identity", Dr. Noriko T. Reider argues that the work is a heterotopic inversion of classical oni mythology heavily influenced by the supernatural configuration brought about by World War II. She describes the novel as a "...heterotopic site where...contemporary representations of oni reflect past representations, where oni of the past are not simply superimposed upon the present but both act as extensions of each other in an odd continuum". The character of Yasunori Kato is intended as a homage to classic heroes from Japanese folklore such as Minamoto no Raiko (an imperial soldier related to oni) and Abe no Seimei. Whereas those heroes were ardent defenders and valuable servants of the Empire though, Kato is presented as its worst possible enemy. This inversion is also reflected in the character of Taira no Masakado, whom at the beginning is demonized by the narrator and the Japanese government as a national rebel and a threat.
The creation of this new hospital was only possible through the personal involvement of Prime Minister Hintze Ribeiro and a substantial grant from Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the largest Portuguese public banking corporation. Construction concluded in December 1904 and the first patients, transferred from Arroios Hospital, were admitted in January 1906. Rego Hospital (Hospital do Rego), as it was soon after known, was renamed Curry Cabral Hospital in 1929, as a homage to its founder, José Curry da Câmara Cabral, Chief Infirmerer (Enfermeiro-Mor) of the city's general hospital, who had long advocated the establishment of a specialised hospital for communicable diseases. From its inception, Curry Cabral Hospital became a part of the city's hospital centre, then collectively known as "Saint Joseph's Hospital and Annexes" (Hospital de São José e Anexos) and from 1913, called the "Civil Hospitals of Lisbon" (Hospitais Civis de Lisboa, HCL), nowadays the Central Lisbon University Hospital Centre (Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Central, CHULC).
Sliding Void's main polity is the Triple Alliance (often simply the 'Alliance' or 'TA'), a bureaucratic multi-world confederation of the three dominant species, of which humanity is one. Most of the books' events occur in The Edge, a lawless independent region of free worlds bordering the Alliance. While guest of honour at Toronto's Ad Astra convention, Hunt described how he had written the series as a homage to fill the void left by the cancellation of all of his favourite TV science fiction series: Star Trek, Stargate, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica and Farscape (the void of the series title being both an allusion to this, as well as 'Sliding Void' being used by spacers as slang for sub-warp transit). The first novel, Void all the Way Down, focuses on the inclusion of Calder, an exiled prince from a medieval-level failed colony world, into the ship's crew as they embark on running supplies to an illegal mining operation.
"Run-Away" received much praise from reviewers with the Manchester Evening News claiming the track to be "absolutely timeless stuff", likening it to Gruff Rhys "swaggering up to the karaoke and picking out his favourite Roy Orbison ballad" and the NME stating that, "with a chorus as big as guitarist Huw Bunford's new serial-killer beard, it's up there with the most finely polished weapons in the SFA armoury". Website Culture Deluxe claimed the track showed the band at "their pop-best" and proved they "could do no wrong" while the Independent on Sunday called "Run-Away" "outstanding". The Spector-like nature of the track was commented on in several reviews with British television station Channel 4 describing "Run-Away" as "Spector pop", BBC Wales describing the song as "a homage to gun-wielding production oddball Phil Spector", and Yahoo! Music in the UK and Ireland stating that the single "welds a killer falsetto chorus to a latterday incarnation of the 'Wall of Sound'".
Born on October 18, 1953 in Paris to a Swiss-German mother and an Alsatian father, Julien Weiss, a guitarist of classical training which he learned from École Normale de Musique de Paris as a student, had fallen in love with Arabic music in 1976 when he met Munir Bachir, the Iraqi grand master of the oud (oriental lute). He then embarked on the study of this instrument and of the refined laws governing oriental micro- tonal music. Abandoning the oud for the qanûn, a sort of oriental zither which he had learned from great masters in various countries of the Middle East, Julien Weiss had founded in 1983 the instrumental ensemble Al-Kindi conceived as a takht (grouping of soloists) devoted to music of the Arab world. Three years later, in 1986, he converted to Islam and took the name Julien Jâlal Eddine Weiss as a homage to Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī.
Drawing by Mihai Olos At his return from Germany, with the situation becoming more and more oppressive and his health deteriorating, the artist decided to quit smoking making of this another happening, since as a cure of chain- smoking, he will be chain-drawing, to prove that artistic gesture can replace a vicious habit, being a therapy through art. The opening was planned as a homage to Brâncuşi on the 111th anniversary of his birth, in February 1987 and the show consisted in 1275 ink drawings of various dimensions. They drawings for the show had been selected by the members of the family from the thousands of drawings he had made along the years, according to certain themes suggested by the artist. Among them were portraits, nudes, human and animal figures, sketches for his paintings or sculptures, of his past or future projects, such as his project for a monument of Voevod Bogdan of Maramureş (of which there had been also tridimensional pieces made of clay) made later on by one of the younger sculptors, and naturally, of his Universal City.
"I imitate popular art that will not become popular art". With these words Hugo Markl has described his art, which feeds on the media imagery of consumer society, newspapers and porn websites, fashion magazines such as Vogue, logos of multinational corporations like FedEx, and even traffic signs, or objects charged with cultural and social connotations, such as the famous Winchester rifle. Markl deconstructs these symbols, or rather the relationship between the images and their referent, through collages, drawings, sculptures and installations that create a typical estrangement effect, creating a vision that looks both familiar and unknown. The artist sometimes combines references to low or vulgar culture with highbrow culture, as in the case of the IQ drawing series (2009), where the sign 'ROCK' is overlaid on the naked body of a woman, as a homage to conceptual artist Dan Graham-or the sign 'IKEA' is silhouetted against the reproduction of a famous edition of Horkheimer and Adorno's Dialectic of Enlightenment, the Bible for critics of consumer society and mass culture.
Ruth Grogan, "The influence of painting on William Carlos Williams" (1969), in The Penguin Critical Anthology devoted to Williams, pp.290-3 But the close relationship with Charles Demuth was more overt. Williams' poem “The Pot of Flowers” (1923) references Demuth's painting “Tuberoses” (1922), which he owned. On his side, Demuth created his “I saw the figure 5 in gold” (1928) as a homage to William's poem “The Great Figure” (1921). Williams' collection Spring and All (1923) was dedicated to the artist and, after his early death, he dedicated the long poem “The Crimson Cyclamen.” (1936) to Demuth's memory. Later collaborations with artists include the two poem/ two drawing volume that he shared with William Zorach in 1937Penn Libraries and his poem “Jersey Lyric”, written in response to Henry Niese's 1960 painting of the same title:Ilse Munro, “Concerning Craft: Henry Niese and William Carlos Williams", Little Patuxen Review, October 2011 > View of winter trees before one tree in the foreground where by fresh-fallen > snow lie 6 woodchunks ready for the fire Throughout his career, Williams thought of his approach to poetry as a painterly deployment of words, saying explicitly in an interview, "I've attempted to fuse the poetry and painting, to make it the same thing….
