Merry explored themes of body dysmorphia and humans’ relations with food with the video performance, “Body Dysmorphia on Pink”. The performing woman, fully nude and painted entirely pink, was offered a buffet of food options. As the model applied paint to her body with the food, the performance asks the audience to observe how certain foods are treated and perceived by the young actress. “Body dysmorphia on Pink” ultimately questions how society “wears” food and why foods are thought of as either good or bad .

After the war, with the additional skills that he had acquired, Smith released his pent-up energy and ideas in a burst of creation between 1945 and 1946. His output soared and he went about perfecting his own, very personal symbolism. Traditionally, metal sculpture meant bronze casts, which artisans produced using a mold made by the artist. Smith, however, made his sculptures from scratch, welding together pieces of steel and other metals with his torch, in much the same way that a painter applied paint to a canvas; his sculptures are almost always unique works.

French artist Yves Klein applied paint to models' bodies which were then pressed into or dragged across canvas both as performance art and as painting technique. In 2010 at the Museum of Modern Art, a retrospective of the work of Marina Abramović included two nude models standing in a narrow doorway through which visitors passed, replicating a work performed by the artist and a partner in 1977.
