Passarello is a Whiting Award-winning essayist and former actor whose previous collection, "Let Me Clear My Throat" (2012), tackled the subject of the human voice in a series of essays that ranged from the Wilhelm scream to the apostrophized voice of a sentient ventriloquists' dummy.

In Chapter 16 of Our Mutual Friend (1864–65), Charles Dickens described the character Sloppy as a "Full-Private Number One in the Awkward Squad of the rank and file of life". Two preceptive works in Arabic are ascribed to Ibn al- Muqaffa', al-Adab al-kabīr and al-Adab al-saghir, but only the first, now known as Kitāb al-ādāb al-kabīr, can be accepted as his . The first of its four parts is a very brief rhetorical retrospect on the excellence of the ancients’ legacy, clearly Sasanian, of spiritual and temporal knowledge. The second is a miniature mirror for princes. The addressee, seemingly the caliph's son, is apostrophized as one in pursuit of the rule of seemly conduct (adab).

Boyan (accompanying on the gusli) by Viktor Vasnetsov Boyan is the name of a bard who was mentioned in the Rus' epic The Lay of Igor's Campaign as being active at the court of Yaroslav the Wise. He is apostrophized as Volos's grandson in the opening lines of The Lay (probably a reference to Veles as the patron of musicians). Historians have been unable to determine whether Boyan was his proper name (as Nikolai Karamzin and Fyodor Buslayev postulated) or all skalds of Rus were called boyans (Alexander Vostokov). Although The Lay is the only authentic source mentioning Boyan, his name became exceedingly popular with later generations.

Bill Hornadge, in The Australian Slanguage, his survey of Australian English and its usage, states that "The word BLOODY has for so long been called the Great Australian Adjective",The Australian Slanguage by Bill Hornadge, 1986 edition, p149 and explains that "The Bulletin is generally given the credit for naming 'bloody' as The Great Australian Adjective (in 1894) explaining that it called it this: '...because it is more used and used more exclusively by Australians than by any other allegedly civilised nation.'"The Australian Slanguage by Bill Hornadge, 1986 edition, p150 In 1927, in a piece in The Sydney Morning Herald, A. G. Stephens lamented the over-use of the word "bloody" in everyday speech, though he himself doesn't use the word in his essay.

Tomb of Saint Lazarus in the Church of St. Lazarus Tradition says that the place of Lazarus' tomb was lost during the period of Arab rule beginning in 649. In 890, a tomb was found in Larnaca bearing the inscription "Lazarus, four days dead, friend of Christ". Emperor Leo VI of Byzantium had Lazarus' remains transferred to Constantinople in 898. The transfer was apostrophized by Arethas, Bishop of Caesarea, and is commemorated by the Orthodox Church each year on October 17. The transferred relics were later looted by the Fourth Crusade in the early 13th century and were brought to Marseille but subsequently lost. In recompense to Larnaca for the translation, Emperor Leo had the Church of St. Lazarus erected over Lazarus' tomb in the late 9th to early 10th centuries. The church is an elongated building measuring 31.5 x 14.5 m with a tripartite sanctuary, semicircular apses internally and three- sided externally and a five-sided apse in the center. The interior structure of the church is divided into three aisles with bulky double pillars and arched openings going through them.
