But not counting the anthemic "F the NRA" (right, they don't actually say "F"), the lyrics—to the disinherited "5 Farms," the disconnected "Bimbo,"' the homophilic "Hey Buddy," the junkiephobic "Stranger Danger," the lithium-enabled "Lithium"—don't clear up until you consult a cheat sheet.

The Killers' catalogue is a winding path of sound: Hot Fuss brought electronic elements into the genre—pulling inspiration from Britpop and new wave; they then switched gears to Americana and Bruce Springsteen on Sam's Town; and went back to the 80s for safe, anthemic stadium U2 rock on Day & Age and Battle Born (my theory is that U2 as inspiration serves to cause more musical harm than good.) It's where they found their safest success and what is potentially the best direction sonically to satisfy.

They don't sound like much '80s music, but they do sound like other contemporary bands critics have claimed sound like the '80s, epitomizing how an allegedly dated pop genre will stay with us in perpetuity under the tag of '80s revival — their anthemic choruses, their glittering and/or glossy and/or tangy and/or moist array of textures, the saxophone solo on "This Must Be My Dream," and the very idea of electrofunk-lite lead us to imagine a fictional soundtrack to the hermeneutically sealed high school paradise everyone who's ever watched a John Hughes movie knows all too well, based not on the music from that era but on collective cultural memory.
