It's not alone: Within the last several years, since clawing its way out of obscurity, Snarky Puppy has become the most visible of a crop of young bands building on a foundation of funk, rock, hip-hop and electronic music, typically with streamlined internal combustion and an overlay of vaulting, anthemic melody.
" He followed it up with a one-two punch of "hold me closer Bernie Sanders" in ode to Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" and making up his own song with "Harper Valley DNC" — the latter of which suggests the DNC deserves a scathing calling out, à la Jeannie C. Riley's anthemic "Harper Valley PTA.
In between records, the musician also won a Grammy with pal Tony Bennett for their jazz duets album, took home a Golden Globe for her frighteningly entertaining turn on American Horror Story and scored an Oscar nomination for "Til It Happens to You," an anthemic ballad inspired by sexual assault on college campuses.
From there she dipped into her own back catalogue, first with "Citizen Ship," a track from 1979's Waves, and finally with a show-stopping version of her anthemic "People Have the Power" which got the 3,000-strong crowd on their feet and had the evening's artists crowding the stage to sing along.
The anthemic "Memory Gospel" (originally released as a B-side on his 1999 masterpiece Play) lends dreamy texture to the garish brutality and frenetic acting in one of the film's climactic scenes, a montage of gun violence and stilted dancing; it underscores the film's dramatic tension between the otherworldly and the mundane.
As the frontman and chief songwriter of this Los Angeles-based rock band, he found success in his own right with the 1996 release of his group's unexpected breakout: the T Bone Burnett-produced album "Bringing Down the Horse," which featured the elegiac yet anthemic hit "One Headlight" and won them two Grammys.
Robyn: Honey (Konichiwa/Interscope) In 2010, the Swedish dancepop singer released three EPs in quick succession that, when compiled onto the full-length Body Talk, represented a career peak: for an hour, just like a well-constructed club mix, the anthemic hooks and bouncy disco beats surge forth with an experienced dancer's confidence.
For the last number of the night, the crowd boisterously joined in on a decidedly jolly and regrettably—but—absolutely to this group of people--anthemic "Too Much Junkie Business," not part of L.A.M.F. (you can find it on 1982's In Cold Blood) but one of Thunders' trademark tunes nonetheless, and therefore vital.
After stepping up for a medley of "A Day in the Life" and Lennon's anthemic "Give Peace a Chance," they teamed up for an awesomely raucous rendition of "Why Don't We Do It in The Road"—a stripped down White Album tune inspired by the sight of two monkeys…well, you get the idea.
The new material still grasps onto those more experimental aspects, like multi-layered harmonies, Afropop-inspired rhythms, and more use of electronics than we've ever heard from them before, but thankfully eschews the realm of cheesy, chanty, anthemic alternative rock (think Foster the People, Imagine Dragons) that their then-peers have since delved into.
"Boxes is a vibrant, sonically forward-looking album that manages to retain what their legions of fans love about the Goo Goo Dolls – indelible melodies, intimate, heartfelt lyrics, and the anthemic, uplifting vibe of their songs – while pushing new boundaries in terms of sound and production," the band's label described the LP when it was announced.
It arrived during a year in which garage's pop chart domination was secured with number ones for Shanks & Bigfoot's "Sweet Like Chocolate" and Armand Van Helden's "You Don't Know Me", while only one million crying nans buying Cliff Richard's "The Millennium Prayer" could stop Artful Dodger's anthemic "Re-Rewind" with Craig David from doing the same.
A group that describes itself as "[messing] with other people's music, and [keeping] orchestral tradition in the cellar", the Heritage Orchestra—a 30-60 piece ensemble arranged and conducted by Jules Buckley—will offer their own take on Goldie's anthemic jungle staples (not for the first time, either; they combined in 2015 for an anniversary performance of "Timeless").
Like some of their contemporaries, they use this wealth of source material—such as the albums they grew up on, turbulent life experiences, and previous efforts to build anthemic and triumphant metal—to conjure the kind of metal that originally made people cut the sleeves off their denim jackets and throw their fists in the air.
From the brassy horns on the top of that '70s-sounding sample off the top to the anthemic, driving beats that remind me of golden era Bad Boy production to the lyric "Nobody did me no favors/I'm sorry if you can't take it/I been goin' through changes" — this song is a real gut-puncher.
The pilot, which airs on NBC on Tuesday, keeps the emotional gas pedal floored from the opening scene, scored to Sufjan Stevens's melancholy "Death With Dignity," to the end, set to Labi Siffre's anthemic "Watch Me." And all the way in between, this well-crafted and shameless dramedy is a jam-packed theater of the verklempt.
They applauded a moment in which a bus driver pointed to a verse in a passenger's Bible to reassure those who did not speak English, as well as a jokey line about "the gayest town in Newfoundland" and an anthemic song about the career path of the first female American Airlines captain (played by Ms. Colella).
The effect rouses — right up to when Butler, pumping his figurative fist, ends a verse by screaming "I guess we'll just have to adjuuuuuuuust" as if expecting cheers from all the young adults in the audience who've felt growing pains, whereupon the mushy qualifiers ("I guess") and the weak verb ("adjust") collapse under the weight of the anthemic moment.
This veteran singer-actress's voice is celebrated in households across the country, particularly those with young children: As Elsa, the animated snow queen of Disney's "Frozen," Menzel powers the inescapable pop-culture juggernaut that is "Let It Go." Though the song is by far the biggest hit of her career, Menzel is no stranger to the anthemic.
" Keith Murphy wrote for BET, calling the performance "cringe-worthy" and arguing that Perry's blatant co-opting of black culture made it "hard to believe you were witnessing the same woman whose brazenly feel-good music once compelled a bar filled with Black folks to sing along to her anthemic fist pump of a hit 'Roar.
And while a lot of critical focus has been on her anthemic, uplifting singles from Rainbow ("Praying" and "Woman") as a nod to her pop music renewal, it's actually the album's introspective country twang opener, "Bastards," that is the core of Kesha's refresh and comeback—the one song on the record that truly encapsulates that Kesha is still defiantly here.
This year's Rojus EP was a fantastic dance document, and the epic "Blush" was its crown jewel; a glowy shapeshifter centered around an anthemic chorus and wordless screams, "Blush" was one of 2016's trippiest big-room jams, a song designed to literally blow your mind to the point where you just might stop dead in your tracks in the middle of the dancefloor.
Most emo screamers vent romantic anxiety with more self-regarding self-loathing than any listener who doesn't identify completely can stand; these guys subtract the content while maintaining the emotional impulse, their mood equally pained and sensitive for no good reason other than they regard their own lives as sweeping, anthemic, and likely doomed heroic sagas, as their stylistic conventions have taught them to do.
The arrangement is still in its early stages; rather than entering one at a time on each verse, Starr's drums and Lennon's acoustic guitar are present early on, with Harrison's tossing in a few tentative electric fills just before McCartney tackles the anthemic coda — which he gamely sees through for three and a half minutes with full-throated vocal runs and Little Richard howls.
The label's sudden outpouring of visionary electropop throughout 2014 and 2015, its embrace of commodity fetishism and insistence that ironic distancing devices deepen rather than dissolve a pop thrill, have devolved into clunky anthemic attempts at spiritual uplift, as the transition from their definitive PC Music Volume 1 collection to the inflated Volume 2 illustrated — a collection largely indistinguishable from the megaballads currently favored in commercial EDM.
Late last year it was announced that indie rock's beloved Superchunk would be making a much-needed comeback in 2018, with a new album titled What a Time to Be Alive due on 16 February (via Merge, obvi.) They shared the title track, a reasonably lo-fi affair with a typically anthemic guitar line, along with that announcement, and today, they're back with another.
Since she sings about anxiety and failed relationships and emotional metaspirals veering out of control and the struggle to be happy, those invested in an emo revival tag her crunchy, strummy style as emo, especially insofar as her full, max-volume choruses recall Weezer's, but to me the term implies an anthemic pathos whose tenderness in the punk context conveys doomed struggle against the inevitable failure of punk energy.
"Listen up and I'll tell a story / About an artist growin' old / Some would try for fame and glory / Others like to watch the world" In this era of pop music, the major labels that be—and the concerningly small roster of songwriters who seem to churn out the top-10 hits year after year—have certainly perfected the formula of what makes a tune catchy or anthemic.
Born of that borderline self-sabotaging earnestness was the band Bleachers, an intensely personal project that Mr. Antonoff, 33, has put at the center of his life ever since; "Gone Now," out Friday, June 2, via RCA, is his second album under that moniker, and it furthers his maximalist approach to anthemic, life-affirming pop-rock about loss and just how taxing it is to be a decent human being.
" One of the things he wanted, it turned out, was to make some of the best club records he's made in years—running the gamut from the claustrophobic techno of "Gameovr," through the the chugging bass and moody vocals of "Out Of Time" and the piercing synths of "Do The Maff," all the way to the anthemic come-to-Jesus breakdowns of "Trigonometry" and the blissful Destiny's Child sample that runs through "Track 10.
Too much time at war makes that strange conflation entirely too easy to make, but mostly it makes it convenient; it is an uncomfortable thing to consider that the facts on the ground in this nation have made the national anthem less anthemic for some Americans than others, and it is a relatively more comfortable one to mount, in response, a defense those brave and nebulous heroes we insist on continuing to throw in harm's way.
This inflated follow-up album, four labored years in the making, doubles down on the anthemic choruses, flashy string swells, heartsick soul singers tearing up at the mic, and general pomposity — a white, conservative artistic mode if ever one existed — all backing lyrics calculated to convince African-Americans he's not like all those other bad white people, he's different, he knows the culture, he's familiar with Langston Hughes and Lorraine Hansberry and James Baldwin, he's a friend.
While the city has seen many homages and references through music, none in recent times has so proudly made a banner of the area, and with such pride, as Jimmy B. His most recent tape Prince of The Borough: Ch. 1 - The BRiCKZ serves as an ode to the city with tracks like the anthemic and aptly named "Scarborough," which illustrates the borough with a sense of passion that borders on hyperbole, whilst also acknowledging its hardships.
Moments later, the band was barreling through a string of songs about lust, love and romance: the pealing arpeggios and Bo Diddley beat of "She's the One"; the galloping momentum of "Candy's Room"; the anthemic surge of "Because the Night" with a leaping, swooping guitar solo played by Nils Lofgren as he hopped and twirled on one foot; and the updated girl-group pop, with troubled thoughts, of "Brilliant Disguise," which ended with Mr. Springsteen embracing his wife (and backup singer), Patti Scialfa.
She even ends her set with one, the raucous, anthemic "Girls' Night Out" (a song so good that without a studio version of it to listen to at will I feel sure that I will wilt and die.) Rather than following the usual pop cycle of presenting us with a finished item every two years, Charli XCX is much more interested in making weird bangers that interrogate and embrace pop tropes in equal measure, rolling them out to fans at will.
The Killers' catalogue is a winding path of sound: Hot Fuss brought electronic elements into the genre—pulling inspiration from Britpop and new wave; they then switched gears to Americana and Bruce Springsteen on Sam's Town; and went back to the 80s for safe, anthemic stadium U2 rock on Day & Age and Battle Born (my theory is that U2 as inspiration serves to cause more musical harm than good.) It's where they found their safest success and what is potentially the best direction sonically to satisfy.
This is black metal at its most grand, coldly melodic and unapologetically over-the-top without stumbling into wimpy, overly symphonic territory—the deranged organ trills on the title track is proof enough of that, to say nothing of the soaring, anthemic guitar/keyboard interplay on "Metamorphosis" or the unnerving audio samples on "Disgust & Remorse Part I." Anagnorisis has always felt like a band that demanded quite a lot of itself, and on Peripeteia, one gets the distinct impression that they're finally satisfied—not enough to stop, or to slow down, but to push even harder.
They don't sound like much '80s music, but they do sound like other contemporary bands critics have claimed sound like the '80s, epitomizing how an allegedly dated pop genre will stay with us in perpetuity under the tag of '80s revival — their anthemic choruses, their glittering and/or glossy and/or tangy and/or moist array of textures, the saxophone solo on "This Must Be My Dream," and the very idea of electrofunk-lite lead us to imagine a fictional soundtrack to the hermeneutically sealed high school paradise everyone who's ever watched a John Hughes movie knows all too well, based not on the music from that era but on collective cultural memory.
