Haywood, Delarivier Manley and Aphra Behn were known as "The fair triumvirate of wit" and are considered the most prominent writers of amatory fiction. Eliza Haywood's prolific fiction develops from titillating romance novels and amatory fiction during the early 1720s to works focused more on "women's rights and position" (Schofield, Haywood 63) in the later 1720s into the 1730s. In the middle novels of her career, women were locked up, tormented and beleaguered by domineering men. In the later novels of the 1740s and 1750s however, marriage was viewed as a positive situation between men and women. Due to the economy of publishing in the 18th century, her novels often ran to multiple volumes.
In a nod to eighteenth century British amatory fiction, 'Welcome to Temptation explores the boundaries between public and private life, using gossip and the protagonists' seemingly private sexual interactions. The original amatory novels, such as those by Delarivier Manley, contained erotic scenes of seduction, often framed in a voyeuristic way (looking through a window), but also a retelling of gossip or scandal, primarily "salacious scandal about real political figures of the day". Critic Kimberly Baldus refers to this shifting between the public and private as liminality. Crusie's heroine embraces this; entire scenes of the screenplay she is writing are based on, or entirely taken from, conversations or sexual interactions she has had with the hero.

Philip of Amphipolis was a Greek writer of unknown date, remarkable for his obscenity, of which Suidas has given a sufficiently significant specimen. He wrote a history of Rhodes, which Suidas especially stigmatizes for the obscenity of its matter, a history of the Cos island and Thasiaca a history of Thasos. He wrote some other works not enumerated by Suidas. Theodorus Priscianus, an ancient medical writer, classes Philip of Amphipolis with Herodian and Iamblichus the Syrian, as a pleasant writer of amatory tales, whose works tended to allure the mind to the pursuit of pleasure.
The first rehearsal as a four-piece band took place on April 1, 2001 - that day became the band's official birth date. With this line-up, Amatory played several concerts until June when unexpectedly for all of them Potekhin was drafted into the military service for two years. After losing their vocalist, songwriter and conceptual leader they decided to move on - [DENVER] took on the vocals and the writing of the lyrics, and [GANG] began composing music. Following the reassignment of duties within the band they recorded a new demo called "I Will Not Survive".
In the spring of 2006, during the "Rock 5 Tour", Sergey [GANG] Osechkin suddenly felt severe pain in his right side. In the summer of the same year, when the band was working with Hansen on new material, he felt unwell. In October Amatory went on their largest tour to date called Live Evil with session guitarist Nikolai "Niky" Yuriev (Russian: Николай Юрьев) of the band "Perimeter" due to the grave health situation of Osechkin. The third album titled Book of the Dead (Russian: Книга Мертвых) was released on Friday the 13th, in October 2006.
Authors of amatory fiction had a tendency to use their novellas as a commentary on women's roles in society, and how they were being treated. There are many instances where the use of sarcasm highlights the sentiment the author was trying to get across to the audience. Another popular, and similar, writing tactic was called swerve, which involved the author being sarcastic about how they were viewed to be inferior, as to not upset the male critics. These writers often detailed extramarital affairs, and promoted strong themes of scandal, and sexual promiscuity.
Title page for the first publication of Fantomina in 1725 Fantomina; or, Love in a Maze is a novel by Eliza Haywood published in 1725.Fantomina is referred to variously as a "novel", "novella", and a "piece of short fiction" by scholars. In it, the protagonist disguises herself as four different women in her efforts to understand how a man may interact with each individual persona. Part of the tradition of amatory fiction is to rewrite the story of the persecuted maiden into a story of feminine power and sexual desire.
This hexameter lament in 80 lines was connected to the Dirae because of the mention of Lydia in that poem but is probably an independent piece. It also has a pastoral setting and is in the tradition of Theocritus' amatory idylls and Latin love elegy. It begins with the poet saying he envies the countryside which Lydia inhabits and describes his pain at his separation from her. He looks to the animal world and the astronomical world with their amorous pairings and feels despair at the passing of the golden age.
In an interview with the Poetry Society that took place when the Carcanet edition was published he was asked about this book: PS: I don't know very much about The Greek Anthology. Would you tell me something about it, how the idea came together and what appealed to you so much about it? GD': The original Greek Anthology is made up of sixteen books of short poems attributed to many different authors, ranging from the seventh century BC to the tenth century AD. The poems are amatory, religious, dedicatory, humorous, sepulchral, hortatory, declamatory, and satirical.
They produce a sense of delight and can transport readers back to the times of ice cream, daytime naps, and tireless games with friends. It has also been echoed her work "Piolin", the Argentine author Maria Elena Walsh, who defined it as "transparent Piolin", for its literary beauty and clarity. Since 1980, emerges a stage of maturity as a writer, moving their production toward a modern style. They emerge at this stage, poems that reflect an era intimately reflective of the poet and several poems of nature amatory.
Their duty was to wage "psychological warfare" against the Muslims by reading poetry and by singing amatory songs to spur the courage and the will-to-fight of the soldiers. They knew that nothing held such terror for the Arabs as the jibes of women for cowardice, and they also knew that nothing was so efficacious to turn them into utterly reckless fighters as the promise of physical love. These amazons included the wives of Abu Sufyan and Amr bin Aas, and the sister of Khalid bin Walid.
Had it not been for the arrival of Sir Willoughby Rawdon, Franceso's amatory aspirations might have been fulfilled, but Sir Willoughby and Dolores have met, and fallen in love. Rawdon is unpopular with the inhabitants of Santiago, not for anything he has done but because of the unscrupulous way in which his father acquired the plantation, depriving local people of their orange groves. Trading on this, Francesco raises the cry of the vendetta, and cards are drawn to decide who is to be the instrument of vengeance. Francesco stacks the deck, to ensure that the fatal card is drawn by Dolores.
Scene at the Four Arts Ball In Paris, Bobby Summers and Mabel Mannering frequently address their Uncle Brab with the catchphrase, "Yes, uncle!". Bobby is trying to help his friend, the artist George Stark, to disentangle his amatory affairs, and for that purpose, Bobby is temporarily impersonating George, with Mabel pretending to be Mrs. Stark. The couple have a quarrel about whether to attend the Four Arts Ball, and Bobby goes on his own, disguised as a French count, in which guise he successfully deceives both Mabel and an old flame, Lolita. Lolita successfully makes a play for rich Uncle Brab.
He started to distance himself from his bandmates, therefore they did a little trick to get their drummer back - they began to write music in the grindcore style but little by little introduced the elements of alternative metal. In the summer of 1999 they found a rehearsal space in a youth club called Rubin, consequently they should have introduced themselves. On that occasion PJ came up with the name for the band - he called it Amatory. The name itself is said to have come from an English - Russian dictionary and was chosen because it was in tune with Crematory, Obiatuary and Cemetary.
Around this time the band also gained a following outside of Russia and ex- USSR countries - they received many fan mails from Latin America, Europe, Indonesia, etc. In the spring of 2007, Amatory went on the second leg of the Live Evil tour with session guitarist Ivan Ludewig (Russian: Иван Людевиг, ex- Kirpichi). On April 26, 2007, the band did a sold-out show at the Yubileyny Sports Palace, it was filmed and later released as the concert DVD+CD "Live Evil". By summer they played several concerts as a four-piece while looking for a new guitarist.
In October, Nashe TV started broadcasting a mini-series filmed during the recording sessions for the upcoming album. It provided an insight into the creation of new songs in collaboration with Danish producer Tue Madsen, known for his work with Meshuggah, Dark Tranquility, Suicide Silence, etc. In November, [AMATORY] released a single Breathe with Me (Russian: Дыши Со Мной) and signed a contract with the music label FG Nikitin. This single became the band's first song that was played on the radio in Russia and some neighbouring countries, it stayed seven weeks at number one surpassing The Prodigy and Depeche Mode.
On March 29, 2019, [AMATORY] unexpectedly released a single "Space Kamikaze" (Russian: Космо-камикадзе) with a new incognito vocalist, whose face was covered by a mask. The inspiration behind this song arose from their discontent with the political climate in Russia. On July 5, a second single titled "The Knife" (Russian: Нож), recorded together with Russian rapper Dirty "RAM" Ramirez, was released and a lyrics video for this song appeared on the official Amatorytube YouTube channel. A few days later the band announced a live broadcast on VKontakte and posted another photo with the new singer, now without a mask.
While an observer would immediately identify a focus on sentimental love and the erotic, there is an underlying motivation to present the woman in an entirely different light. Instead of sentimentality and the abundance of romantic elements, there is an identifiable desire to depict women who want fulfillment of their own sexual desire as opposed to merely serving the pleasure of men. For example, a writer of amatory fiction would create a female character who demands more from friendship and pursues personal satisfaction in her relationships. For a time, this was branded as sentimentality and romantic thinking.
Sergiu Matei is also a music producer, beatmaker, and DJ known as OT BEATZ. He is known for producing songs for artists like Tory Lanez, Oxxxymiron, Nafe Smallz, MARKUL, Porchy, L'One, ST, Prince Ea, The Motans and other minor worldwide artists. He also released himself as an artist in 2014 with his first single track "BLVCK", later he releases his second single "Hey World" featuring Mikaella (now Misha Miller). The single is released with an official music video which features the official drummer of the Russian band "Amatory" Daniil [STEWART] Svetlov with a drum part on the drop.
Apart from the four rings there are three pendants and a heart-shaped brooch, which like some other items is inscribed with an "amatory phrase", in this case "je suys vostre sans de partier" (I am yours wholly). One of the pendants is a tiny enamelled padlock, inscribed "de tout" on one side and "mon cuer" on the other (of all ... my heart). The turquoise gem on one ring was reputed to have protective powers for the wearer against drowning, poison and riding accidents. The rings are thought to be English, but other items may be made in Flanders.
After the fields of battle, Maximus must fight again in the arena at the Colosseum, against gladiators and savage beasts. This second thrilling episode of the saga is also a faithful reconstruction of the amatory arts of Roman women, whether they were patricians with an itch to scratch, or unbridled plebeian women given to sodomy and gangbangs. The orgies in the lupanars and the parties held by Commodus and his henchmen bring to life a series of highly erotic and shocking sex scenes, with disturbing and sinful women, lovers of debauchery and proud of their arts.
At this point, he began signing his work with just his last name; eventually, he also Anglicized his first name as "Alexander" and dropped the "de". Cañedo was commissioned in 1929 to illustrate the amatory novel Orientale: The Adventure of Therese Beauchamps by the French author Francis de Miomandre. The highly stylized Art Deco results were so successful that he retained Cañedo the following year to illustrate his next novel, The Love Life of Venus. In 1932, Cañedo was invited to have a solo show of his pencil drawings at Walter P. Chrysler, Junior's newly opened Cheshire Gallery, located in the Chrysler Building.
The writings of Timon are represented as very numerous. According to Diogenes Laërtius, he composed "lyric and epic poems, and tragedies and satiric dramas, and thirty comedies, and sixty tragedies and the Silloi and amatory poems." His work is frequently quoted by Sextus Empiricus, also a follower of Pyrrho. Apart from the fragments of the Silloi, most of what survives of Timon's work is what Diogenes Laërtius and Sextus chose to quote and what Eusebius preserved in Praeparatio evangelica quoting Aristocles quoting Timon's book Python in which Timon describes encountering Pyrrho the grounds of an Amphiareion while they were both on a pilgrimage to Delphi.
The restaurant is full of private rooms, ideal for intimate suppers. Others who come to the restaurant, mostly in pursuit of amatory enterprise, are the Baron's son Hubert; the Baron's daughter, Jacqueline; Réné, her fiancé and cousin; Suzanne Pomarel, wife of a provincial merchant, whom the Baron has awarded a prize for virtue; Mme Charcot's husband; and finally M. Pomarel. Mme Pomarel is an old flame of Réné and has agreed to have supper with him, but Hubert, who is much smitten by her, has persuaded Réné to let him take his place. The Baron, dining with Mme Charcot, has to hide under his table to avoid his wife.
It has been noted by most recent commentators on English folk song, that love, the erotic and even the pornographic, were major traditional themes and, if more than ballads are considered, may have been the largest groups of printed songs.J. Wardroper, Lovers, Rakes and Rogues, Amatory, Merry and Bawdy Verse from 1580 to 1830 (London: Shelfmark, 1995), p. 9. Many collectors in the first revival either ignored such songs, or bowdlerized them for publication, as Francis Child and Cecil Sharp did in their collections.M. Shiach, Discourse on Popular Culture: Class, Gender, and History in Cultural Analysis, 1730 to the Present, (Stanford CA: Stanford University Press, 1989), p.
Haywood is notable as a transgressive, outspoken writer of amatory fiction, plays, romance and novels. Paula R. Backscheider claims that "Haywood's place in literary history is equally remarkable and as neglected, misunderstood, and misrepresented as her oeuvre" (xiii intro drama). For quite some time Eliza Haywood was most frequently noted for her appearance in Alexander Pope's The Dunciad rather than for her own literary merits. Even though Alexander Pope made her a centerpoint in the heroic games of The Dunciad in Book II—she is, in Pope's view, "vacuous"—he does not dismiss her for being a woman, but for having nothing of her own to say.
This voice type was called haute-contre, and the majority of heroic and amatory parts were written for it in grand opera and in opéra-comique. This type reached its apex in the age of Rameau. It was, in fact, a type of tenor voice extremely light and widely ranged, but nearly systematically uttered in falsettone in the high pitch, so as to somehow re-echo the castrato "contraltista" of the Italian stamp.Caruselli, Grande, vol 4, p 1197, article: "tenore". This thesis, evidently borrowed from Rodolfo Celletti’s positions, does not seem to have been fully shared explicitly, in Potter's recent work about the tenor voice.
A work of amatory fiction, Love in Excess offers many models of female desire, and ultimately articulates the early-18th century "cultural shift toward a companionate model of marriage." Like Aphra Behn and Delarivier Manley, Haywood uses love triangles to illustrate the different roles women can play. Exploring the conflict between social expectations and individual desires, Haywood's novel illustrates how female desire is silenced by public norms. According to David Oakleaf, Haywood "laments that women cannot, like men, express their desire directly". Although Love in Excess is known for its female characters, Count D’elmont is also an important character. Count Delmont is a “male version” of women who inspire sexual desire but are indifferent to their admirers.
In December 2015, Carlyle teamed up with KT Tunstall and Max de Wardener, to provide a live soundtrack to Frank Borzage's 1927 romantic silent classic 7th Heaven at the BFI London Southbank. In 2016, Carlyle collaborated with Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay, from French Electro House outfit Justice, on their 3rd Album "Woman". Seen as a tribute to femininity, the 10 track album is a romantic, amatory, disco opus on which Carlyle assumed the role of 'Vibe Editor' and produced the choral and orchestral sessions with the London Contemporary Orchestra. She contributed vocals on several tracks, along with musical saw on the album standout track "Chorus", described as a Morricone/Queen mash-up.
DF covered a lot of underground Rock and Electronic events in St. Petersburg that time, some of headliners were My Chemical Romance (USA), Rammstein (DE), Prodigy (UK), Dillinger Escape Plan (USA), Accept (DE), Amatory (RUS), Axwell (SWE), Armin Van Buuren (NL), Esthetic Education (UA), Apshell (RUS), Stigmata (RUS), IFK (RUS). Most of DF artists signed with DF Records in 2006 and DF Artist Management later the same year. In, 2009 and 2010 DF Music Organization closed few main businesses due to world crisis and following crisis in entertainment media and physical distribution. Some of the artists, who were all the time with DF Records finished their music careers or joined other bands.
In 2004, [AMATORY] together with the bands Psychea and Jane Air, formed the "Spb (short for Saint Petersburg) Music" coalition. In the following years they were also performing on joint tours with some other bands from Saint Petersburg. On February 6, 2005 the band released a single "Black and White Days" (Russian: Черно-Белые Дни) which was dedicated to Dimebag Darrell of the bands Pantera and Damageplan, who was shot and killed on stage by a deranged fan during a concert in December 2004. In early 2005, the band released their first DVD titled [P]ost [S]criptum, consisted of home videos recorded by themselves, their crew and friends during the tour in support of the album "Inevetability".
Opera seria built upon the conventions of the High Baroque era by developing and exploiting the da capo aria, with its A–B–A form. The first section presented a theme, the second a complementary one, and the third a repeat of the first with ornamentation and elaboration of the music by the singer. As the genre developed and arias grew longer, a typical opera seria would contain not more than thirty musical movements. A typical opera would start with an instrumental overture of three movements (fast-slow-fast) and then a series of recitatives containing dialogue interspersed with arias expressing the emotions of the character, this pattern only broken by the occasional duet for the leading amatory couple.
But the preface to the Franciade is a fine piece of verse, superior (it is in alexandrines) to the poem itself. In general, Ronsard is best in his amatory verse (the long series of sonnets and odes to Cassandre, Pikles, Marie, Genévre, Héléne—Héléne de Surgeres, a later and mainly "literary" love—etc.), and in his descriptions of the country (the famous "Ode à Cassandre," the "Fontaine Bellerie," the "Forêt de Gastine," and so forth), which are graceful and fresh. He used the graceful diminutives which his school set in fashion. He knew well too how to manage the gorgeous adjectives ("marbrine," "cinabrine," "ivoirine" and the like) which were another fancy of the Pléiade.
It was of inferior quality to Meleager's. Somewhat later, under Hadrian, another supplement was formed by the sophist Diogenianus of Heracleia (2nd century AD), and Straton of Sardis compiled his elegant Μουσα Παιδικη (Musa Puerilis) from his productions and those of earlier writers. No further collection from various sources is recorded until the time of Justinian, when epigrammatic writing, especially of an amatory character, experienced a great revival at the hands of Agathias of Myrina, the historian, Paulus Silentiarius, and their circle. Their ingenious but mannered productions were collected by Agathias into a new anthology, entitled The Circle (Κυκλος); it was the first to be divided into books, and arranged with reference to the subjects of the pieces.
They had 14 children. Wieland's daughter Sophia Catharina Susanna Wieland (October 19, 1768 - September 1, 1837) married philosopher Karl Leonhard Reinhold (1757-1823) on May 18, 1785. Between 1769 and 1772, Wieland was a professor of philosophy at the University of Erfurt. In his Verklagter Amor ("Cupid Accused") he defended amatory poetry; and in the Dialogen des Diogenes von Sinope (1770) he gave a general vindication of his philosophical views. In 1772 he published Der goldene Spiegel oder die Könige van Scheschian, a pedagogic work in the form of oriental stories; this attracted the attention of Duchess Anna Amalia of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, and resulted in his appointment as tutor to her two sons, the Duke Karl August and his brother Prince Constantin, at Weimar.
Title page of the first edition of The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle In 1751, Tobias Smollett included the Memoirs of a Lady of Quality in his novel The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle. Though the memoirs, written in amatory fiction, were published anonymously and revised for publication by John Shebbeare, it was clear from the beginning that the "lady of quality" was Lady Vane. Horace Walpole wrote in a letter the same year: In her memoirs, the Viscountess Vane mocks contemporary social and moral conventions, and describes her emotional devastation following the death of her first husband. Walpole gossiped in the same letter: Lady Vane shocked society not only by refusing to portray herself as chaste, but also by unrepentantly advertising her adulterous relationships.
Her muse was always didactic, and although her Songs, after the fashion of her time, were full of amatory context, they inculcated self- government and morality. The professional connections of her father, the aristocratic relationships of her mother, and the celebrity early won by her own extraordinary talents, gained her a large circle of acquaintance; and although straitened in the means of subsistence, and probably possessing little of her own but the earnings of her pen, Trotter moved in the best society, and was a frequent and welcome guest in the houses of the rich and great. Her beauty, and the unaffected sweetness of her manners, bore the charm of unasserted mental superiority. The title page of a 1696 edition of Trotter's Agnes de Castro.
From left to right: Denis Zhivotovsky, Daniil Svetlov, Eugene Potekhin (1999) [AMATORY] founders Denis [DENVER] Zhivotovsky (Russian: Денис Животовский) and Daniil [STEWART] Svetlov (Russian: Даниил Светлов) met at the age of 13 in the spring of 1998. They have been hanging out and skateboarding in the courtyard of the block of flats where they both were living at the time. Initial rehearsals were held that same spring in Svetlov's apartment, they played snippets of their favorite songs by Nirvana, Sex Pistols, The Exploited, and a self-penned song by Zhivotovsky. In the autumn of 1998 a mutual acquittance set them up with Eugene PJ Potekhin who was older, more skilled and had additional guitar gear including an amplifier and an effect pedal.
A music video for the song "Star Dust" was filmed with the participation of the fans of the band, it was released on November 5, 2019. After the "DOOM tour" Amatory announced two concerts with guest musicians on the occasion of the band's 19th anniversary - on March 22 and April 3, 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic they were moved to September 2020. On April 17, 2020, the band released 2 instrumental albums: "The Unvoiced Pt. I (6 Instrumental)", "The Unvoiced Pt. III (DOOM Instrumental)", and an instrumental EP "The Unvoiced Pt. II ( Fire Instrumental)". On June 26 of the same year, a single "Motherland" (Russian: Родина) under ONErpm's project "DDT Territory - a tribute to DDT" was released.
In addition to the ballad's likeness to Shirley's "The Changes, or, Love in a Maze," the subtitle, "Love in a Maze" is perhaps most recognized in the amatory fiction piece written by Eliza Haywood in 1725, nearly a century after the ballad and play's first publications. Though Shirley's play, the broadside ballad, and Haywood's novella do not retell exactly the same plot line, themes of witty lover engagement, sexual awakening, and lascivious practices are apparent in all three. And though more is usually known about the ballad's tune in ballad scholarship, there is little known about either "The True Lovers Delight" or "The Cambridge Horn." Neither are cataloged in Chappell's Popular Music of Olden Time or Simpson's The British Broadside Ballad and its Music.
When his amatory attempts fail, Donna punches him and knocks him out; as he falls, Birkhead accidentally releases a bomb, sending it rolling towards the podium just as the General promises, "There will be no bombs dropped here." The assembled reporters and audience panic and scatter as the bomb strikes the grandstand and explodes, though Stilwell and the crowd are unhurt. At the Santa Monica ocean side home of Ward Douglas and his wife Joan, Wally is told by Betty and her friend Maxine, who have both just become USO hostesses, that they are only allowed to dance with servicemen as they are now the only male patrons allowed in the club. Wally is forced to hide in the garage when Betty's father Ward, who disapproves of Wally, appears. Sgt.
Not more than one or two are good throughout, but a full posy of beauties may easily be culled from them. The long cadences of the Alexandrines with which most of the strophes close, continued to echo in English poetry from Dryden down to Gray, but the Odes themselves, which were found to be obscure by the poet's contemporaries, immediately fell into disesteem. The Mistress was the most popular poetic reading of the age, and is now the least read of all Cowley's works. It was the last and most violent expression of the amatory affectation of the 17th century, an affectation which had been endurable in Donne and other early writers because it had been the vehicle of sincere emotion, but was unendurable in Cowley because in him it represented nothing but a perfunctory exercise, a mere exhibition of literary calisthenics.
When in 1774, a foreign composer, Christoph Willibald Gluck, was for the first time invited to work for the Académie Royale de Musique, Legros had to confront the new composer's ground-breaking performing style. Although the singer "had an unusually brilliant and flexible upper register, particularly from top F to B flat", Gluck did not like either his expression or his acting ability,In fact, Gluck rejected most of the conventions in force at the Académie and came into conflict with the whole establishment (management, singers, dancers, orchestra). but he was obligated to entrust the company's principal tenor with the amatory leads in the operas he was going to produce. Accordingly, in 1774 Legros was charged with the roles of Achilles in Iphigénie en Aulide and, more important, Orphée in the new French version of Orfeo ed Euridice.
In 1879 he published Ranker og Roser (Tendrils and Roses), amatory lyrics of a very high order of melody, in which he showed a great advance in technical art. To the same period belongs Paa sømands tro og love (On the Faith and Honor of a Sailor, 1878), a volume of short stories in prose. It was about this time that Drachmann broke with Brandes and the Radicals, and set himself at the head of a sort of nationalist or popular- Conservative movement in Denmark. He continued to celebrate the life of the fishermen and sailors in books, whether in prose or verse, which were the most popular of their day. Paul og Virginie and Lars Kruse (both 1879); Østen for sol og vesten for maane (East of the Sun and West of the Moon, 1880); Puppe og Sommerfugl (Chrysalis and Butterfly, 1882); and Strandby Folk (1883) were among these.
In Ovid's Amores (1.6), the speaker claims he would gladly trade places with the doorkeeper, a slave who is shackled to his post, as he begs the door-keeper to allow him access to his mistress, Corinna. In the Metamorphoses, the famous wall (invide obstas) with its chink (vitium) that separates the star-crossed lovers, Pyramus and Thisbe, seems to be an extension of this motif. The appeal of the paraclausithyron derives from its condensing of the situation of love elegy to the barest essentials: the lover, the beloved and the obstacle, allowing poets to ring variations on a basic theme. This feature of amatory poetry may owe its origin to Greek New Comedy; as is often the case scholars look to Roman comedy to supply the deficiencies of the highly fragmentary remains of the Greek models and in lines 55 to 65 of Plautus' Curculio is a specimen of a short but nonetheless completely bona fide paraclausithyron.
This voice was predominantly used in male solo roles, typically heroic and amatory ones, but also in comic parts, even en travesti (see apropos the portrait reproduced below and representing Pierre Jélyotte or made up for the female title role of Rameau's Platée). Lully wrote 8 out of 14 leading male roles for the voice; Charpentier, who was an haute-contre himself, composed extensively for the voice-part, as did Rameau and, later, Gluck. The leading hautes-contre of the Académie Royale de Musique that created the main roles of Lully's operas, at the end of the seventeenth century, were Bernard Clédière (who started off as a taille, a lower Tenor voice type) and Louis Gaulard Dumesny. Notable hautes-contre of the eighteenth century’s first half included firstly Jacques Cochereau, Louis/Claude Murayre and Denis-François Tribou, who revived Lully style and operas in the twenties and in the thirties,Weller, op. cit.
