"[We thought] of her as graceful and yet awkward at the same time, and that's really the hard challenge that we had with her. Actually in terms of design, there were lots of fun things, like at one point she had a sort of 'Fallen Angel' feel to her, like broken wings," Weir recalled. Motion capture sessions were used for inspiration for the alternatingly awkward and fluid motion of the character, though none of it was used in the final product.

Tsekos is serving a 4-year suspension handed down by the Greek athletics federation in 2005. Tsekos, a former nutritional supplements salesman who lives alternatingly in his native Greece and his adopted home in Lincolnwood, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago), had been involved in a number of doping-related incidents before. In 1997, at an athletics event in Dortmund, Germany, a row occurred between Tsekos and an IAAF doping controller whom he prevented from testing four of his athletes, among them Thanou and Charis Papadias. However, the doping controller, Klaus Wengoborski, arrived with no identification and without a female official accompanying him, a violation of IAAF regulations at the time.

Solarix takes place in the year 2166 on humanity's first interstellar space colony, established on the planet Ancyra. An airborne viral infection has wiped out almost every human aboard the colony, transforming many of them into hostile zombie-like creatures referred to as "anomalies". Walter Terrace, a civilian engineer and seemingly the sole civilian survivor of the colony, wakes up with no memory and is contacted by AMI, the Artificial Intelligence system controlling the colony, who enlists Walter's help in finding a way to stop the infection. Throughout his journey, Walter is also frequently contacted by Betty, a violent and unstable fellow survivor who often contacts Walter to alternatingly cajole, mock, and threaten him or otherwise comment on the situation.

Strictly speaking, alternating occlusion is a form of visual deprivation and as such may have negative effects during a critical period of development. Experiments on kittens that were published 1965 by Hubel and Wiesel showed that continuously submitting kittens at a young age to a protocol under which the eyes were alternatingly occluded on a day-by-day basis over a prolonged period of time led to changes in the visual cortex, in particular a disruption in cellular connections that would normally enable binocular vision. Experiments with rearing young kittens under rapidly alternating monocular occlusion using constantly-worn electronic goggles showed that cortical binocularity was reduced if the flicker rate was 2 Hz or lower, and that binocularity developed normally if it was 2.5 or 3 or 5 Hz.

In 1920 Morikawa Kanichirō (森川勘一郎, 1887–1980) from Nagoya discovered a 5-segment scroll of the Murasaki Shikibu Diary Emaki consisting of alternatingly five illustrations and five captions. Formerly in possession of the Matsudaira clan, rulers of the Saijō Domain in Iyo Province, this scroll is referred to as "Matsudaira clan edition" or after its finder as "Former Morikawa edition" (not to be confused with the Morikawa edition below which refers to the Morikawa family). Two years after discovery Morikawa sold the scroll to the Niigata businessman and master of the tea ceremony, Masuda Donō (益田鈍翁, 1847－1938, who had it cut into parts. One part (Morikawa edition), the fifth segment, is bequeathed to the Morikawa family and today in a private collection.

During the War of the Spanish Succession beginning in 1702, Joncaire preserved Iroquois neutrality by alternatingly presenting gifts to the Seneca and threatening the Seneca with attacks from their western Native American neighbors if they were to break their treaty with New France. In the summer of 1709 during Queen Anne's War, Joncaire and his men assassinated Louis Montour (relative of Madame Montour) on Governor Vaudreuil's orders. Montour was urging the Seneca to grant right- of-way to their western neighbors on the behalf of the New York-based traders who employed him, which threatened the French control over the Seneca. In August 1711, when New France was threatened by an attack from the English, Joncaire and convinced several Native American tribes to renew their alliance with New France at a banquet in Montreal by singing an Iroquois war song.

Several bulk water supply projects on the upper portion of the Kaliwa River Watershed have been proposed by the Philippine Government since the 1970s, with the intent of relieving Metro Manila of its overdependence on the water supplied by Angat Dam. Most of these have focused on a particular site in Barangay Laiban in Tanay, Rizal, on the upper portion of the Kaliwa River Watershed, and the projects have thus often been referred to as Laiban dam or Kaliwa dam, although multiple projects have been referred to using either name. Due to controversies regarding the project's environmental impact and its potential effect on local communities, notably including a community of Remontado Dumagat people who consider the area part of their ancestral lands, these projects have been controversial and have thus been alternatingly approved, deferred, cancelled, and reapproved by the Philippine Government at different times since the late 1970s.
