After World War II, many servicemen and servicewomen returned to the United States from Asia and the Pacific islands with aloha shirts made in Hawaii since the 1930s. One significant manufacturer was Shaheen, which began business in 1948. Following Hawaii's statehood in 1959, when extant tropical prints came to be regarded as rather tacky, designer Alfred Shaheen became noted for producing aloha shirts of higher chic and quality, and Elvis Presley wore a Shaheen-designed red aloha on the album cover for Blue Hawaii (1961). In 1956, Tori Richard, a well-known brand of Alohas was established.

A halftone reproduction of a 1919 painting of USS Aloha at sea during World War I Soon after commissioning, Aloha was assigned to serve as flagship for Rear Admiral Cameron McRae Winslow (1854–1932), Inspector of Naval Districts, East Coast. No record of Alohas activities during 1917 has survived. On the morning of 1 January 1918, while Aloha lay moored at the Norfolk Navy Yard at Portsmouth, Virginia, a fire broke out in downtown Norfolk, which quickly spread to engulf almost two city blocks. The city's civil authorities soon requested help from the Navy, which dispatched men from Norfolk Naval Base and ships nearby.

During this period of repairs and alterations, which lasted through September and October 1918, she received additional armament in the form of two 4-inch (102-millimeter) guns. After departing the Boston Navy Yard on 5 November 1918, Aloha spent much of the ensuing passage to Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada, under sail and arrived at Shelburne on 7 November 1918. Returning to Boston on 10 November 1918, Aloha was lying moored there when the armistice with Germany ending hostilities was signed on 11 November 1918. The remainder of Alohas Navy career was spent alternately at Newport, Rhode Island, and at New London and New Haven, Connecticut, before she arrived back at New York City on 14 December 1918, shifting her berth to a point off Pier 72, East 25th Street, New York City, on 15 December 1918.

Phoenix has authored and co-authored several coffee table books dedicated to vintage Americana, showcasing many of the slides he has in his collection. He has written and compiled three books specifically about Southern California - Cruising the Pomona Valley 1930 thru 1970 (1999), Southern Californialand: Mid-Century Culture in Kodachrome (2004) and Southern California in the '50s: Sun, Fun and Fantasy (2011) - as well as two books detailing a wider scope of American culture, God Bless Americana (2002) and Americana the Beautiful: Mid- Century Culture in Kodachrome (2006). With co-author Fred E. Basten, Phoenix also contributed to 1999's Leis, Luaus, and Alohas, a similar coffee table book about Hawaii in the 1950s, and Fabulous Las Vegas in the 50s. In August 2008, it was announced that PBS affiliate KOCE-TV would produce 18 episodes of a thirty-minute Los Angeles-based travel series hosted by Phoenix called Southern CaliforniaLand, though the series ultimately failed to progress past the development stages.
