Rubio also wants to know how Apple will make more haste the next time an app is pilfering off customer data, how Apple will audit app updates more quickly (an app update appears to be when Adware Doctor's suspicious behavior began), and how Apple will ensure apps have security controls to prevent foreign actors' access.

Thomas Reed, a researcher that studies Mac malware at the security firm MalwareBytes said that Adware Doctor is not "outright malicious" since it doesn't steal more sensitive data such as passwords—though it could in theory because of the permissions it has—but it's "not legit" given that it actively gets around Apple's restrictions.

It's also worth keeping in mind that a greater diversity of threats detected on the average endpoint doesn't necessarily mean that a greater number of endpoints are being infected—it could simply mean that adware is coming in a wider array of flavours these days, and the people getting infected are inviting in that increased diversity of flavours.
