Before taking up photography, Micky Allan practiced painting. She produced a series of hand- coloured monochrome photographic prints in the mid 1970s, as did other Australian women artists. This is a technique that was used to 'colour' black- and-white portraits and wedding photos up to the 1970s before the availability of cheap C-type prints from logout negatives, and revived by artist- photographers in the early 2000s. Hand-colouring involved manually adding colour to a black-and-white photograph, through the materials and techniques of painting and the use of dyes.

Pipe and Drape is used to divide, hide, and/or decorate a space temporarily. When the system is used for exhibition purposes and used instead of the traditional shell scheme option build time and breakdown time is significantly reduced. Pipe and drape is a great way of adding colour to what would normally be a relatively plain backdrop.

Ahead of the 16 March 2019 timetable revision on the Tobu Tojo Line, 50090 series set 51092 was repainted from its previous "Flying Tojo" into a new art-based livery. The livery, designed by Koyano Yuuki, is designed to advertise the city of Kawagoe with the theme of "adding colour to Kawagoe". The set was reintroduced into service on 12 February 2019, and was used on the first down departure of the new "Kawagoe Limited Express" train category operating on the Tojo Line since the 16 March 2019 timetable revision.

" It is known that Mayall used a similar method of hand-colouring daguerreotype portraits while based in Philadelphia. When two journalists visited Mayall's new premises in London's Regent Street in 1853, they observed the work of the "colouring room" in which "two damsels were busily at work" adding colour to Mayall's daguerreotype portraits. "The colours used by them were all dry minerals, and were laid on with the fine point of a dry brush; pointed between the lips; and left to become dry before using. A little rubbing caused these tints to adhere to the minute pores upon the plate.
