Laissez-faire is synonymous with what was referred to as strict capitalist free-market economy during the early and mid-19th century as a classical liberal ideal to achieve. It is generally understood that the necessary components for the functioning of an idealized free market include the complete absence of government regulation, subsidies, artificial price pressures and government-granted monopolies (usually classified as coercive monopoly by free market advocates) and no taxes or tariffs other than what is necessary for the government to provide protection from coercion and theft, maintaining peace and property rights and providing for basic public goods. Right-libertarian advocates of anarcho-capitalism see the state as morally illegitimate and economically unnecessary and destructive. Although laissez-faire has been commonly associated with capitalism, there is a similar left-wing laissez-faire system called free- market anarchism, also known as free-market anti-capitalism and free-market socialism to distinguish it from laissez-faire capitalism.

Yellow Head, "Chief of Lake Simcoe", was the "head chief" of the Chippewas of Lakes Huron and Simcoe from sometime before 1797 until 1817. Evidently he was already exercising that office when, in the late summer of 1797, he led a contingent of some 140 of his Ojibwe to York and Niagara, the administrative centres of Upper Canada, seeking redress of grievances concerning absence of government contact and non-receipt of customary "annual Presents".Murray (ed.), Muskoka and Haliburton, 100-101 Yellow Head was instrumental in persuading the Ojibwe of the Home District of Upper Canada to take up arms in support of the British during the War of 1812, and personally saw action at the Battle of York in April 1813, where he sustained wounds that appear to have curtailed his subsequent career. His son Musquakie, similarly known as Yellow Head, and (after his conversion to Methodism) as William Yellowhead, seems to have assumed Yellow Head's chiefly duties by 1815, and in 1817 he formally replaced his father as head chief.
Article 225, created in the Lisbon Treaty, sought to put an end to this controversy by giving Parliament a means to request proposals to the Commission, but this puts no obligation on the Commission and is legally non-binding, with the Commission only needing to "inform the European Parliament of the reasons" for rejecting a legislative proposal. Criticism of this alleged deficit has been countered by a number of political scientists, who have compared the systems of governance in the European Union with that of the United States, and stated that the alleged powerless or dysfunctional nature of the European Parliament is now a "myth". It is argued that there are important differences from national European parliaments, such as the role of committees, bipartisan voting, decentralized political parties, executive-legislative divide and absence of Government-opposition divide.
