In 1843 a revivalist clergyman, Rev. Henry James Prince, preached at the church of Stoke, near Wixoe.Spiritual Wives, Vol 2, William Hepworth Dixon, 1868 On the death of Josias Nottidge in 1844, the five unmarried sisters each inherited the sum of £6,000.Spiritual Wives, Prince persuaded them to contribute to the founding of a religious community in Somerset, to be called the Agapemone, or Abode of Love.

The Agapemonites or Community of The Son of Man was a Christian religious group or sect that existed in England from 1846 to 1956. It was named from the meaning "abode of love". The Agapemone community was founded by the Reverend Henry Prince in Spaxton, Somerset. The sect also built a church in Upper Clapton, London, and briefly had bases in Stoke-by-Clare in Suffolk, Brighton and Weymouth.

The Abode of Love by Aubrey Menen – "an appallingly inaccurate popular account" according to one review – is a novelisation of the history of the Agapemonites under Prince's leadership. In 2006 Smyth-Pigott's granddaughter, Kate Barlow, published an account of life as a child with her family in the sect. The book includes family photographs and details of conversations she had as a child with the then elderly sect members.

Thavaratnam Sinniah, president of the Jaffna District Fisheries Societies’ Federation acts as its chairman and KP as the secretary. NERDO is also involved in the reintegration process of former LTTE cadres. Its projects include building orphanages, vocational training centers, model farms etc. First NERDO operated children’s home Anpu Illam (Abode of Love) was declared open in Muthaiyankattu village, Mullaitivu in July 2011.

In 1860 Louisa's brother, Ralph Nottidge, sued Prince to recoup the money that Louisa had given him as a result of his undue influence over her, in the case of Nottidge v. Prince (1860). The Nottidges won the case, with costs. After the cases were resolved Louisa Nottidge returned to Spaxton and spent the rest of her life as one of the Agapemonites. In 1856, a few years after the establishment of the “Abode of Love”, Prince and Zoe Patterson, one of his virginal female followers, engaged in public ceremonial sexual intercourse on a billiard table in front of a large audience.

As Betjeman sits at a table in the Chiltern Court restaurant, "When the Daisy Opens her Eyes" by Albert Sandler plays. When Betjeman looks at 12 Langford Place, 'Agapemone', 'the abode of love', country house of the Reverend John Hugh Smyth-Pigott, "The Witch of Endor" from "Le Roi David" by Arthur Honegger is heard. The sequence at Neasden is accompanied by the song of the same name by William Rushton.

The Garden, with Dal Lake in the background While the recent history and development of the Mughal types of gardens is credited to Emperor Jahangir, the ancient history of the garden can be traced to the 2nd century when it was built during the reign of Pravarsena II. Praversena II founded the city of Srinagar and ruled in Kashmir from 79 AD to 139 AD. He had built a cottage for his stay at the northeastern corner of the Dal Lake and had named it Shalimar. The word Shalimar in Sanskrit means 'abode of love'. The king, on his visits to a local saint by the name Sukarma Swami at Harwan, used to stop at this cottage. Over the years, the cottage fell into ruins and later could not be located.
