Experts and Google employees have previously criticized the project, with Stat reporting in 2016 that one former Verily manager described the smart lens as "slideware," or a project that sounds good in theory but is limited in its potential beyond a PowerPoint presentation.
Alphabet is perhaps the one company that has explicitly separated out its non-core business into its own reporting segment — Other Bets, which encompasses everything that's not part of Google, including self-driving cars, Nest, its venture arm, Verily and so on.
Back when it was announced, Verily said that it had an ECG feature alongside the usual stuff you expect on a smartwatch — but it didn't receive clearance from the FDA for it until today (oddly, in the midst of a government shutdown).

Despite Trump's claims, Google isn't building the coronavirus screening site — and it's not ready On Saturday, VP Pence clarified the situation a bit by saying that Google (or Verily – because who knows at this point) would have a pilot version of the screening site ready for a test in the Bay Area by tomorrow, Monday the 16th.
The Advisory Board&aposs presentation cited Verily&aposs work with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System around improving the health system&aposs outcomes on knee replacements, alcohol-withdrawal care, and heart attacks, as well as its efforts with the New England-based medical group Atrius Health to keep patients out of the emergency room.
