They need protection from the disruption and colonizing effect of markets—the reason Donald Trump's pro-market, pro-Wall Street, pro-employer politics makes such a grotesque of his appeal to traditionalism—and they need protection from both the old inequalities of tradition itself and markets' acceleration of those into new realms of precarity.

One form of pressure comes from the left, which is increasingly intent on rooting out all residues of traditionalism within the liberal order — treating any form of nationalism as suspect, any policing of religious orthodoxy as dangerous, any approach to sex and family and childrearing that isn't purely gender-egalitarian as a dangerous atavism.

Conservative Catholicism isn't standing athwart church history yelling stop; since (at least) the 1960s it's always occupied somewhat more unstable terrain, and under Francis it's increasingly a movement adrift, tugged at by traditionalism and liberalism alike, and well short of the synthesis that would integrate fifty years of rapid change into a coherent picture of how the church can remain the church, what fidelity and integrity require.

They adhere to the normal conservative triad of nationalism, free markets, and moral traditionalism, but they put greater weight on the nationalist leg of the stool — leading to a more strident form of anti-immigrant politics that often veers into racism, an isolationist foreign policy rather than a hawkish or dovish one, and a deep skepticism of economic globalization that puts them at odds with an important element of the business agenda.

But in between secularism and traditionalism lies the most American approach to matters of faith: a religious individualism that blurs the line between the God out there and the God Within, a gnostic spirituality that constantly promises access to a secret and personalized wisdom, a gospel of health and wealth that insists that the true spiritual adept will find both happiness and money, a do-it-yourself form of faith that encourages syncretism and relativism and the pursuit of "your truth" (to borrow one of Oprah's Golden Globes phrases) in defiance of the dogmatic and the skeptical alike.
