In addition to the figurative representations, the work also included a kaleidoscopic background with abstract elements that he said were intended to mirror the blur of activity on a busy urban thoroughfare when viewed from across the street or down the block.

As worsening traffic has put a stranglehold on New York, the country's largest city, it has moved to squeeze out cars, taking away street space to make room for bikes and pedestrians, and all but banning vehicles from a major Manhattan thoroughfare.

Only steps away from the wide boulevard of Telegraph Avenue, with its Korean and Ethiopian restaurants, the little pedestrian thoroughfare also contrasts with the industrial buildings east on Broadway and the vintage houses with pocket-size front lawns on the blocks in between.
