The takeaway is that so much of the world's artistic production — Japanese ukiyo-e prints, Ottoman mosques, Mughal paintings, San rock art in southern Africa, Maori tattoos (ta moko) — matters primarily for what it can tell us about Western art, about how it influenced European masters, or how it was affected by European colonialism.

The Field Museum has included 15 artifacts from our collection in the exhibition, including five drawings on paper of tattoo designs by John Robson, a well-known Haida artist of the early 20th century, as well as a miniature figure of a Saint Lawrence Island Yupik woman with chin tattoos, small figurines carved of wood from the Makonde people of Tanzania and Mozambique that depict their distinctive style of tattoo, and a wood carved house post from New Zealand depicting the Maori tattoo form—ta moko.

Ta moko is the art of traditional Māori tattooing, done with a chisel. Men were tattooed on many parts of their bodies, including faces, buttocks and thighs. Women were usually tattooed only on the lips and chin. Moko conveyed a person's ancestry.

Youle's work features skulls based on tattoo designs, symbols of identification and belonging, for example, to gangs. Youle was inspired by his grandfather's tattoos, identifying him as a sailor. He also studies the historical origins and expressions of ta moko (permanent body and face markings of Māori). The head is tapu (sacred) in Maori culture.

Carving was done in three media: wood, bone, and stone. Arguably ta moko was another form of carving. Wood carvings were used to decorate houses, fencepoles, containers, taiaha and other objects. The most popular type of stone used in carving was pounamu (greenstone), a form of jade, but other kinds were also used, especially in the North Island, where pounamu was not widely available.

Embarking on a Contemporary Maori Oil Portrait series in 2011, Minson has since painted prominent figures in Maori culture such as activist Tame Iti, musicians Tiki Taane and Stan Walker, Ta Moko artist Turumakina Duley and social anthropologist Dame Joan Metge. The portrait of Metge was commissioned by the New Zealand Portrait Gallery for the Makers of Modern New Zealand 1930–1990 exhibition and is now part of their permanent collection.

Besides being known for their music, Moana and the Moahunters were also known for their performances. While their music was categorized as hip-hop, the group was also well known for their excellence in the traditional Maori haka. During concerts they show images related to their music and the Maori people. For example, pictures of the New Zealand landscape or traditional Maori tattooing known as Ta Moko, are often displayed behind the group.

Late twentieth century carved house post depicting the navigator Kupe. Although in an essentially traditional style, this carving was created using metal tools and uses modern paints, creating a form distinct from that of pre- European times. Māori visual art consists primarily of four forms: carving, tattooing (ta moko), weaving, and painting. It was rare for any of these to be purely decorative; traditional Māori art was highly spiritual and in a pre- literate society conveyed information about spiritual matters, ancestry, and other culturally important topics.
