That suggests, perhaps, that for half the population, nostalgia is defined more by a hankering for a go-it-alone Britain to regain a possibly apocryphal notion of self-reliance outside the European Union than by any recollection of shared history — and certainly not by tooting car horns or people with very long memories.
"The purchase of Whole Foods was a moment when people looked up and recognized this company as a force in the economy," said Stacy Mitchell, a co-director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, a nonprofit advocacy group for local businesses, which has published a critical report on Amazon's impact on jobs and communities.
But it may have gained something even more valuable, as David Streitfeld of the NYT notes: "It's tempting to roll your eyes at this soap opera, but Amazon will walk away from this stunt with a cache of incredibly valuable data," said Stacy Mitchell of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, a frequent Amazon critic.
"We didn't want to have Amazon in the name — People Against Amazon or whatever — because part of the strategy is to offer a better vision for how the economy could work," said Stacy Mitchell of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, a nonprofit in Maine that opposes corporate concentration and advocates local community development.

" The A.P.A. guidelines argue that the socialization of males to adhere to components of "traditional masculinity such as emotional stoicism, homophobia, not showing vulnerability, self-reliance and competitiveness" leads to the disproportion of males involved in "aggression and violence as a means to resolve interpersonal conflict" as well as "substance abuse, incarceration, and early mortality.
Hush's greatest strength is its depiction of Maddie as a helplessly naive character who gains self-reliance over the course of the film; she starts out so trusting that all her doors are unlocked, and at one point she casually leaves her sliding door open, even after she's gotten a strange vibe from her environment.
But If The Color Purple's message that women can walk away from violent situations mainly by believing in themselves is wishful thinking, Waitress's message that they can do all this and procure a happy ending is built on downright fantasy: Jenna's diner is essentially a magical reality where sugar, flour, and butter are homeopathic tools of self-reliance.
On North Korea's position on the summit, Kim said "We must deal a serious blow to the hostile forces who are mistakenly determined to bring us down with sanctions by advancing the socialist construction to a high level of self-reliance that fits our circumstances and state, based on our own power, technology and resources," according to KCNA.
"It's striking to me that Amazon has created this situation in which elected officials across the country are signaling to their constituents that Amazon is a great company ... and that we should bend over backwards to try to subsidize and support their expansion," said Stacy Mitchell, the co-director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance.
On its website, Amazon doesn't specifically say which communities aren't eligible for free Prime shipping; instead, it says it uses the following criteria: Stacy Mitchell, the co-director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, told me it's likely only a matter of time before Amazon either cuts off the free shipping or increases prices for remote customers.
" I hesitate to say anything about who sings that notorious anthem to self-reliance or under what circumstances, but I will note that one line stands out, capturing with an impossible blend of excruciating irony and disarming sincerity one of the movie's great themes: "No matter what they take from me, they can't take away my dignity.
During the eight-day program, 563 feature films vied for the Best Torch Award, and the jury was instructed to judge the films based on how well they symbolized the festival's official theme — "Independence, Peace and Friendship" — and whether they articulated the ideology of juche, or self-reliance, developed by the country's founding father, Kim Il-sung.
"The Supreme Leader urged the need for leading officials to fully display a high sense of responsibility and creativity, and the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance and fortitude in an attitude befitting the masters of the revolution and construction under the prevailing tense situation and thus follow through on the new strategic line of the Party," KCNA said.
Though conservatives traditionally embrace savings as a product of thrift and self-reliance, the President and congressional Republicans have made common cause of widening the hole that working-class families have in their pockets -- while concentrating the flow of federal resources that help families build savings and wealth into the hands of those who already have it.
Having created a multibillion-dollar company almost single-handedly over nearly five decades, Mr. Armani — by training an architectural draftsman who entered fashion as a stylist and only reluctantly became a businessman after the death of his life partner, Sergio Galeotti, in 1985 from complications of AIDS — has built his career on cunning and, not infrequently, hubristic self-reliance.
In a country that prides itself on outback ingenuity and self-reliance, the onion slippage scheme seemed to just confirm (for some, at least) that they are living in a nanny state, where the government legislates too much of their lives: from requiring helmets when bicycling to dictating the times they are allowed to have a drink.
Shaoul Sussman, Institute for Local Self-Reliance "Even if another seller is selling a counterfeit, or an empty envelope, if they're selling at a lower price, Amazon's going to give them the Buy Box until such time as enough complaints come in so the brand can show Amazon this other seller is a total fake," said Thomson.
Stacy Mitchell, codirector of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, which has investigated how Amazon fulfillment centers impact communities, told BuzzFeed News the discrepancy between conflicting claims about what it's like to work at Amazon can in part be explained by the large number of temporary and contract workers, who don't have access to benefits like health care or parental leave.
But today, they confront idiosyncratic plotlines, like the insecure modesty of the Golden State Warriors' Kevin Durant; his former Oklahoma City Thunder teammate Russell Westbrook's radical self-reliance; and, of course, LeBron James's journey back to the Cleveland Cavaliers, in which he has been criticized for selfishness and selflessness while being praised and condemned for exploiting his position as the sport's dominant player.
A source familiar with the North Korean leadership's current mindset told CNN ahead of Christmas that the "gift" was more likely to be a new, hardline policy in which Kim would reinforce the state ideology of self-reliance as a means of improving the economy -- a pledge Kim made to his people in 2018 -- rather than pursuing sanctions relief in exchange for denuclearization.
In contrast to that approach, Jardina and Stephens-Dougan writes, we treat individualism as a multidimensional concept, such that one can believe in hard work, self-reliance, and the existence of an open opportunity structure, while also endorsing the role of societal and institutional factors such as racism and discrimination, as explanations for the persistence of racial inequality in the United States.
Wrote O'Neal at the A.V. Club: To these acolytes, Parker and Stone have spent two decades preaching a philosophy of pragmatic self-reliance, a distrust of elitism, in all its compartmentalized forms, and a virulent dislike of anything that smacks of dogma, be it organized religion, the way society polices itself, or whatever George Clooney is on his high horse about.
As Institute for Local Self-Reliance co-director Stacy Mitchell told Gizmodo, the company's market dominance has given it an insurmountable advantage it uses to press retailers and manufacturers: Because most online shopping searches now start at Amazon, rather than at a search engine, virtually every retailer and manufacturer that wants to reach people online has little choice but to set up shop on Amazon's platform.
"You might have a census block outside of a city that comes close to the city, so a few people can get DSL there, and then the entire block is considered to have access when in fact it does not," said Christopher Mitchell, director of community broadband networks for the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, a nonprofit that advocates for local solutions for sustainable development.
After all, there's a growing consensus that wooing big businesses is not the best way to bolster a local economy, and Mitchell with the Institute for Local Self-Reliance said New York's Amazon pitch had less to do with the company's massive propaganda arm than the way politicians' psychology had evolved in recent decades to think their jobs were about encouraging development at all costs.
" Stacy Mitchell, co-director at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance and coauthor of "Amazon's Stranglehold: How the Company's Tightening Grip Is Stifling Competition, Eroding Jobs, and Threatening Communities," tweeted that this is in line with what she has seen before: "In other words: 'We're going to expand in NYC, much as we had planned, but not so splashy and without billions of dollars in giveaways.
To change his mind, analysts say, Mr. Kim must be persuaded of a few things: that the country, and Mr. Kim himself, will be safe without nuclear weapons; that it can control the terms of economic engagement so it strengthens rather than weakens the regime; and that Mr. Kim can present any deal as a victory for self-reliance rather than a cry for economic help.
This suggests an intriguing possibility, says the Ohio State University sociologist Kristi Williams, editor of The Journal of Marriage and Family: Many of the problems experienced by divorced and widowed people may result not so much from the end of their marriage as from having relied too much on their spouse and thus failing to maintain social networks and the skills of self-reliance.
PAUL SILVERSTONE, NEW YORK To the Editor: For every kid who has been left to cry himself or herself to sleep, left home alone or allowed to roam the neighborhood unsupervised at a young age in the name of self-reliance, there is another child with poor bonding skills who struggles with lifelong issues of intimacy and is vulnerable to those who prey upon the emotionally needy.
Take, for example, a question long asked by the American National Election Study about whether "the government in Washington should see to it that every person has a job and a good standard of living...or… the government should just let each person get ahead on their own…" In 2012, 16 percent took a strong position in favor of government responsibility, while 2023 percent strongly advocated self-reliance.

With that in mind, one of the useful things I can do as a journalist—beyond publicly stating that I'm a man who goes to therapy, and it's been wonderfully helpful—is to call your attention to a paper Ronald Levant and other researchers published in 1992, in which the authors boiled down traditional masculinity to seven basic norms: avoidance of femininity, homophobia, self-reliance, aggression, achievement/status, attitudes toward sex, and restrictive emotionality.
