That expedition was delayed almost a month and Berry was dropped from the party, and instead assigned to William Gosse as second-in-charge of his 1873 expedition to Central Australia, and whose other members were Henry Gosse (William's brother, died 1888 in Darwin), Henry Winnall and Patrick Nilen (possibly spelled "Nilan"), three Afghans and "Moses", an Aborigine from Peake. William Darton Kekwick, originally appointed the party's mineral and botanical collector, was too ill to proceed and died 16 October 1872 on his return to Adelaide. Among their discoveries was the monolith Uluru which Gosse named "Ayer's Rock". The party reached a point west of the Transcontinental Telegraph Line and were forced to return due to lack of available water.

Sweet taught biology in high schools while studying; she was employed by the University from 1898 when she began work as a demonstrator, she lectured at Queen's College from 1901 to 1908 until she was offered a position in the university faculty. She lectured in both biology and parasitology and bore a heavy workload due to the periodic absence of the faculties professors. She became second-in-charge of the biology school when Thomas Sergeant Hall died in 1915, and from November 1916 to March 1917 she was Australia's first female acting professor when Baldwin Spencer took leave. Canongate Kirk has been served by several well-known former ministers, two having also served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Very Rev Thomas Wilkie (1645-1711) was the first minister of the Kirk and was twice Moderator - in 1701 and 1704. A long family tradition started in the 18th century with three generations of minister taking the ministry, all Rev John Warden the family changed its name to Macfarlan in the later 18th century following a marriage. The most notable,Rev John Warden (Macfarlan) (1740-1788) was minister 1762 to 1788 and co-founded the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1783. Rev Hugh Blair was first in charge from 1745 to 1753, following two years as second in charge.

In 1885 he was transferred to Portsmouth Dockyard, but returned to London nine months later in February 1886 as Private Secretary to the Junior Naval Lord and spent the rest of his career in Whitehall. In 1937 he became an Associate Professor in Natural Philosophy, and second-in-charge of the Natural Philosophy Department. With the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, Martin commenced projects at the request of the Australian Defence Forces, investigating a proximity fuse for the Australian Army and an acoustic communications system for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) that would allow an instructor and trainee pilot to converse with each other.
