The novel itself is split up into four different parts..0.: Runagate, Sleeper's Wake, Lave Tete, and The Beg Pardon. These names refer to the events chronicled in these chapters. Runagate refers to Avey Johnson's breaking away from the other members of her cruise ship party and heading to the island of Grenada.

In addition to playing soprano saxophone and trumpet, Logan composed both jazz and concert music. Among his concert works are the 1989 "Runagate, Runagate" based on a poem by Robert Hayden about a fugitive slave and "Doxology Opera: The Doxy Canticles" in 2001 which features a libretto by Paul Carter Harrison. Logan's music has been recorded on Orion Records and other labels. Logan believed that being described as a "black composer" was a two-edged sword.

Mother Courage (German Mutter Courage) is a character from a Grimmelshausen novel Lebensbeschreibung der Ertzbetrügerin und Landstörtzerin Courasche (The Runagate Courage) dating from around 1670. The character had played a cameo role in Der abentheuerliche Simplicissimus in 1669. The Bertolt Brecht play Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder (Mother Courage and Her Children) gave her currency in the 20th century. Mother Courage is cast as a walking contradiction by Brecht.

1973 DDR Stamp commemorating the Berliner Ensemble production The name of the central character, Mother Courage, is drawn from the picaresque writings of the 17th-century German writer Grimmelshausen. His central character in the early short novel, The Runagate Courage, also struggles and connives her way through the Thirty Years' War in Germany and Poland. Otherwise the story is mostly Brecht's, in collaboration with Steffin. The action of the play takes place over the course of 12 years (1624 to 1636), represented in 12 scenes.

In October 1614, Ogilvie was discovered and arrested in Glasgow under the orders of Archbishop Spottiswood, and was imprisoned. He was initially treated well, but after continually refusing to confess, was tortured by sleep deprivation until he gave the names of some of his accomplices. He aggravated his position by refusing to pledge allegiance to King James, and it was for this crime that he was tried. During the trial he accused the king of 'playing the runagate from God' and stated he would acknowledge him no more than an 'old hat'.

Converting to Catholicism, he travelled to France around 1556 where he was ordained a secular priest in Notre Dame, Paris, in 1574- possibly at the testimonial of Mary, Queen of Scots. Returning to the north of England, he was a priest in York, where it seems he was 'apparelled in course canvas dublit and hose,' and in the East Midlands as well.Thomas, P.V., 'Privy Council And 'Vagarant Runagate' Priests in Elizabethan York,' The Yorkshire Archaeological Journal 69 (1997), 184. Captured and found guilty in York of 'persuading the Queen's subjects away' from Protestantism, he was executed on 9 September 1587.
