Rudiments can be built up into larger phrases, as in the purely rudimental playing of military and marching bands, or used for technical mastery by drum kit players or orchestral percussionists.

After a spate of successful songs, appearing as a "featured" artist alongside Zedd, Fall Out Boy, Sub Focus and Rudimental as well as a successful single in "Youth", Foxes (Allen) showed intent at releasing a full album to steer away from the "featured artist" title. In an interview with Billboard, she stated the reason was "[...]Because I also have my music that's my baby." In an interview during the "Making of the Album" video featured on her VEVO page on YouTube, Allen calls the album "extremely personal", as well that its influence is from her childhood as well as growing up. Classic corps drum lines of the 1950s and 1960s used fewer exotic percussion instruments and relied instead on the stadium-filling power of a traditional line (or "battery") consisting of six or eight by double-tension maple snare and tenor drum shells and two or occasionally three by bass drums with an ornamental shell covering of hard plastic in a glossy sparkle or pearlescent finish. Until 1965, usually only one cymbalist was used in the field corps although two or even three cymbalists were not uncommon, especially on parade. Until 1963, bass drummers used one stick or mallet and provided the foundation note in the battery. But in that year, drum instructors nationwide added two-stick rudimental bass- drumming to their drumlines, a historic style adopted from fife and drum corps.
Electric Castle is an annual music festival held on the Transylvanian domain of the Bánffy Castle, near Cluj-Napoca in Romania, and combines music, technology and alternative arts. It features many genres of music including rock, indie, hip hop, electronic, techno, and drum and bass as well as art installations. In the seventh edition, the festival has received the award for the Best Medium Sized Festival at the European Festival Awards, where Electric Castle has been nominated since its existence. At the Spectacle of Music in South Milwaukee, The Cavaliers were winners in Class B (while all the corps they considered to be "Big Corps" were in Class A). They went on to win the Iowa State Fair contest and capped the season by finishing in seventh place at their first American Legion Junior National Championship in New York City, and won the General Effect caption. Although the corps was becoming a midwest powerhouse, The Cavaliers were far behind the top corps in drumming. In 1955, the staff added Frank Arsenault, considered to be the best rudimental drummer of his day, to work with the drummers. In 1956, the Cavaliers had risen to the number one ranking in the midwest, but could only manage a third-place finish at VFW Nationals.
While rudimental bass drummers now had more to do, the one-stick bass drummers were often kept on as "foundation bass" or "straight bass" (also as standard bass) drummers. (In the 1930s and 1940s, those corps bass drummers using two mallets were termed as scotch bass drummers.) Until 1965 single tenor drums were commonplace in some corps, the single tenor drum, beaten by 2 soft or hard mallets in the tradition of British corps of drums, served in the same role as the snare drums but without the snares below. The action of beating the mallets was following the British, Dutch or US Marine Corps practice, in which the tenors played as either flourishing tenors following British precedence or rhythm tenors similar to snares. The first multiple tenor drums appeared in 1966 and would be adopted by many corps in later years.

Robert Copsey of Digital Spy gave the song a very positive review stating: > "It was the first song where I thought, 'OK, now I can see the vision, now I > can see the album'," Foxes recently said of her new single 'Youth'. We say > new, but for the singer – real name Louisa Rose Allen – and serious pop > fans, the song's journey from its birth to major label release has been a > slow and often painful one, after she delayed its release and spent the > intervening months guesting on songs for Rudimental and Zedd. Fortunately, > 'Youth' still sounds as fresh and exciting as it did some 18 months after > its premiere. "Don't tell me our youth is running out, it's only just begun" > she sings over galloping beats and mournful electro throbs that build to a > glorious strobing finale that acts as a fitting end to the summer months.
