So, while it's possible that a lack of iron or other nutrients for a longer period of time during pregnancy directly influences the development of the brain on a molecular level, we also saw some evidence that the complications associated with anemia, such as preterm birth and pre-eclampsia, could explain some of the increased risks that we observed.
"Then she could follow-up with a physician and get the appropriate care versus being in a detention facility and dealing with the stress that comes along with incarceration, that could put her in preterm labor or she could be exposed to sick contacts that could cause an infection, potentially complicating the pregnancy further," Rahimian said.

Grown from human stem cells reprogrammed to act like neurons, brain organoids, or "mini brains," can mimic some of the functions of their biological counterparts — last year, for example, the biologist Alysson Muotri announced that his lab at the University of California had grown brain organoids with neurons that fired at a level consistent with that of a preterm infant.
Overall, a rise in preterm births might be linked with a rise in births among women in their late 30s and 40s, since a later maternal age is a risk factor, Dr. Rahul Gupta, chief medical and health officer for March of Dimes, a nonprofit focused on the health of mothers and babies, said about last year's report, which showed the same trends.
Ami Zota, an assistant professor of environmental and occupational health at George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, adds that "no one is trying to say the chemicals [in the study] are the only risk factor for preterm birth" or other health conditions; rather, "it could be one factor contributing to the stark disparities we see today," she says.
"Air pollution-associated preterm birth contributes direct medical costs in the first few years of life due to associated conditions, such as in the newborn intensive care unit, as well as lost economic productivity due to developmental disabilities and lost cognitive potential," lead study author Dr. Leonardo Trasande, an environmental health researcher at New York University School of Medicine in New York City, said by email.
The findings from the study, published in the journal Environmental Research, may point to one reason why black women experience more hormone-related health complications, such as preterm birth, diabetes, obesity, and an earlier start to menstruation (linked to increased breast cancer risk) than white women, as well as why black women and children have higher rates of asthma than their white counterparts, Helm says.
For example, SRP work to increase environmental awareness of expecting mothers in Puerto Rico contributed to a reduction in preterm birth rates on the island from close to 2628 percent in 28503 to 22019 percent in 2015, which translates to an estimated annual savings of $135 million in medical costs for the baby's first year of life SRP innovations have also played important roles in addressing natural and manmade disasters.
"In the AJOG study, we have proven the use of this technology to support, for the first time, extremely preterm lambs equivalent to 24 weeks of human gestation in a stable, growth-normal state for five days," senior study author Matthew Kemp, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Western Australia and head of the Perinatal Research Laboratories at the Women and Infants Research Foundation, said in a statement.
Carol Hogue, an epidemiologist and the Jules & Uldeen Terry Chair in Maternal and Child Health at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and one of the original authors of the 1992 New England Journal of Medicine study on infant mortality that opened my own eyes, was a co-author of a 21 epidemiological review of research about the association between racial disparities in preterm birth and interpersonal and institutional racism.
