Woods was involved in controversy in the 1950 VFL pre-season when he left his job as coach of Collingwood's reserves to replace the retired Jock McHale as senior coach.B. As the club were seeking a non-playing coach, Phonse Kyne announced his retirement and applied for the job — the five applicants were Harry Chesswas, Harry Collier, Phonse Kyne, Harold Rumney, and Bervin Woods — but Kyne was passed up in favour of Woods. The majority of Collingwood supporters were not happy to see Woods get the job ahead of Kyne and jeered both him and the committee during a practice game in April.

In November a fire caused by a cigarette end destroyed the Main Stand, and Manchester City began to seek a new home. A player (whether a skater or goaltender) or any member of any team's coaching staff who receives a game misconduct penalty is ejected, and is sent to the team's dressing room. The player may be immediately substituted for on the ice; however, in practice, game misconduct penalties are often assessed as an addition to a particularly egregious infraction that has also earned the player a two-minute minor penalty or (more often) a five-minute major penalty, in which case another player will serve this penalty in place of the ejected player. Parts of Hyde Road were used elsewhere; the roof of the Main Stand was sold to Halifax Town, and erected at The Shay, where even in the 21st century, part of the Hyde Road roof is still in place.

David Grenvold (born 6 March 1966) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Australian Football League (AFL). Originally from Bordertown, South Australia, Grenvold debut for Glenelg in 1984 as an 18-year- old, he would continue to play on with Glenelg as a solid defender until 1988, missing out on the 1985 and 86 premiership teams. At age 21 he was drafted to Essendon in the 1987 VFL national draft at pick 45. He played 12 games in his debut season and the following year played every game, except for a two-week suspension however in 1991 he injured his knee in a practice game at Moorabbin in 1991 and didn't play a game that season. Grenvold would come back in 1992 with 11 games then played every game in 1993 including the 1993 Grand Final win over Carlton.
