Edwin Harvey Bryant (12 September 1886--24 October 1948) was an English cricketer who played 16 first-class games for Worcestershire in the 1920s. He top-scored with 41 in the second innings of his debut against Yorkshire, but his career was not successful. Bryant made 63 in the first innings against Essex in June 1924, but this was to prove his only half-century. Indeed, his duck in the second innings of that match began a dreadful sequence of scores: he was dismissed for nought five times in six innings (making just 5 in the other), and for single figures in the four innings immediately thereafter.

He finally claimed his first victim in the last AXA League game of the season, when he had Hampshire's Shaun Udal caught by Graeme Hick. Catterall played only two first-class games in 1999, both in September and against Essex and Middlesex, although he did hit 60 in each of them, and took his maiden first-class wicket (that of Essex's Ronnie Irani). In one scene, Jill (Shirley Ann Richards) says to Jim Bradley (Billy Rayes), "Don't call me girlie". This line was used as the title for a 1985 documentary about women in the Australian film industry. The character of Entwistle (Alec Kellaway), the effeminate floorwalker who works at the fashion store, is a rare gay character in early Australian cinema. Although a stereotype, he is depicted as a loyal friend of the hero – the "first upfront camp male character to be treated in a positive fashion"Philippa Hawker, 'There's nought so queer as folk',, The Age, 10 March 2004 and was so popular with audiences he returned in Dad Rudd, MP (1940).

His widow, Agnes, renovated and extended Ludgate and the Debtor's Prison and the practice of making the debtors pay for their own food and lodging was abolished. Her gift was commemorated by a brass wall plaque, which read: Devout souls that pass this way, For Stephen Foster, late mayor, heartily pray; And Agnes, his spouse, to God consecrate, That of pity this house made, for Londoners in Ludgate; So that for lodging and water prisoners here nought pay, As their keepers shall answer at dreadful doomsday! Agnes' second marriage was to Robert Moreton. She was lending hundreds of pounds to others as well as keeping two French knights.

In inferential statistics, the null hypothesis is a general statement or default position that there is no relationship between two measured phenomena, or no association among groups. Rejecting or disproving the null hypothesis—and thus concluding that there are grounds for believing that there is a relationship between two phenomena (e.g. that a potential treatment has a measurable effect)—is a central task in the modern practice of science; the field of statistics gives precise criteria for rejecting a null hypothesis. The null hypothesis is generally assumed to be true until evidence indicates otherwise. In statistics, it is often denoted H0 (read “H-nought”, "H-null", "H-oh", or "H-zero").

The plan for establishing a Jewish state in Palestine came to nought when the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II rejected the plan, saying that Palestine was Muslim land that he would never cede to the Jews and more importantly, he had no intention of giving up any part of his empire. In 1900, Eulenburg was created the first hereditary Prince (Fürst) zu Eulenburg und Hertefeld and Count von Sandels. The princely title was entailed to the family's perpetual possession of the Hertefeld estate. The second title was in honour of the family of his wife, whose father was the last Swedish Count af Sandels.

He made nought and his eight overs disappeared for 53 runs. Marshall's initial senior appearance was a Geddes Grant/Harrison Line Trophy (List A) match for Barbados on 13 February 1978; again he got out without scoring and did not take a wicket. Eisha Marjara is a Canadian film director and writer. With a background in photography, Marjara has written and directed several award-winning films, including the feature documentary Desperately Seeking Helen (1998) and The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1994). Marjara's forthcoming feature film is titled Venus; it has yet to be released. The different names of the game are more recent. The first print reference to "noughts and crosses" (nought being an alternative word for zero), the British name, appeared in 1858, in an issue of Notes and Queries. The first print reference to a game called "tick-tack-toe" occurred in 1884, but referred to "a children's game played on a slate, consisting in trying with the eyes shut to bring the pencil down on one of the numbers of a set, the number hit being scored". "Tic-tac-toe" may also derive from "tick-tack", the name of an old version of backgammon first described in 1558.

Reports went round of Wanderers trying to avoid relegation by pushing for an increase in the number of teams but lightning could not strike twice as the behind-the-scene manoeuvres came to nought and Wanderers found themselves playing Division I football the following season. This was the first time Wanderers had ever been relegated. In 2004, Wanderers finished 2nd in Division I (North) and won promotion back to the top league but sponsorship and administration problems persisted and they made a swift return to the second tier. Palairet was selected for the university cricket team during his first year at Oxford, and made his first-class debut against the touring Australians in May 1890. Palairet scored six and nought and took one wicket in the match which Australia won by an innings. In his next match, Palairet improved, top-scoring for Oxford in their first innings against the Gentlemen with his first half-century in first-class cricket, 54 runs batting at number eight. He only passed 50 runs in one other innings for Oxford that summer, a score of 72 against the MCC, and in all matches for the university that season scored 285 runs at an average of 19.00.

After 4 years, the entire West Indies Federation unraveled, with the head of Jamaica publicly claiming that "one from ten leaves nought", with Jamaica representing the number "1" in the number ten, thus leaving a zero (representing the remaining islands). Trinidad and Tobago's leader quickly followed Jamaica's exit by saying if Jamaica represented the 1, then they were the 0 itself leaving "none", ending the Federation experiment. The remaining islands tried a group of the "Little 8" said it wanted to go its own direction and Barbados next withdrew from any idea of a smaller group. The remaining islands came up with the West Indies Associated States, but ultimately, they too reverted to their sovereign paths.

John Quick in The Way to Get Married. His wife Susan died in 1797, and though a rumoured engagement in 1799 to actress Biggs came to nought, he married in 1806 to another actress, Anne Gaudry, daughter of actor Joseph Gaudry. He served as stage manager at Covent Garden from about 1818 but after the 1828 season was removed, and shortly thereafter announced his intention to leave the stage, which he did in 1830. He retired to Botley, Hampshire, where he spearheaded a campaign to build a new church, in which he would be the first buried following his death, 13 March 1837, his will leaving his property to his widow Anne and son.

The Ace counts as one point, Tens and court cards as nought, and the remaining cards count their pip value. The aim is to acquire nine points or as close as possible to nine points, in one's hand cards as quickly as possible. If a player's first card is a Nine, this is a großer Schlag and wins double, unless the banker also has a großer Schlag in which case the banker collects a double stake from all players except for the punter who also had a nine, who just loses a single stake.

His early cricket at Radley was under the leadership of Ted Dexter. Duff commented that his most distinguished feat on the cricket field was that in his first year in the XI at Radley, he drove Sir George (Gubby) Allen to retirement in 1954. Allen returned from Radley College to Lord's announcing his total retirement having just been caught and bowled for nought off a full toss by a boy at Radley with a treble voice. Duff made his first-class debut in June 1959 for Oxford University against Essex, and had a decent game in a heavy defeat, scoring 53 and 4 with the bat and taking three wickets (the first of these being that of Gordon Barker).

He returned in 1928, continuing with Worcestershire, and played a large proportion of the 1929 season, but he was not a particular success and only twice took more than three wickets in an innings. Australia needed 78 runs for victory and they got their comfortably with the only minor fault in their innings was Matthew Hayden, who was caught at cover, a fielding position in the outfield, by Devon Smith off the bowling of Chris Gayle, as Australia were on nought for 77 and only needed a single for victory. Gayle finished up with figures of 1 for 16 from 6 overs, once again the only bowler to take second-innings wickets. In front of a fifth-daycrowd of 800 - most preferred to watch the run-chase on TV - Mike Hussey was left to hit the winning run as Australia went on to win by nine wickets.

The term is a shortening of the term "duck's egg", the latter being used long before Test cricket began. When referring to the Prince of Wales' (the future Edward VII) score of nought on 17 July 1866, a contemporary newspaper wrote that the Prince "retired to the royal pavilion on a 'duck's egg' ". The name is believed to come from the shape of the number "0" being similar to that of a duck's egg, as in the case of the American slang term "goose-egg" popular in baseball and the tennis term "love", derived - according to one theory - from French l'œuf ("the egg"). The Concise Oxford Dictionary still cites "duck's egg" as an alternative version of the term.

Hitler would not allow his ambassador to trade concessions for French cooperation, and formal negotiations between the Third Reich and Vichy France came to nought. To further mollify her (in hopes of her influencing her brother in favor of the Dutch), the Act of Exclusion was formally revoked in September, 1660 (the Commonwealth having expired as a state, this could be excused as not being a breach of treaty).Israel (1995), pp. 751–753 However, the improvement of De Witt's personal relations with the Prince and his mother came to nought when she suddenly died (24 December 1660), like her late husband also of smallpox.

Burma became the custodian of Buddhism in the region, and the upasampada ordination was re-introduced to Sri Lanka where it established the Amarapura Nikaya. The unfinished Mantalagyi Stupa, intended to be the largest stupa in the world In 1790 Bodawpaya began the construction of a gigantic stupa called Mantalagyi (Great Royal Stupa) at Mingun, up the River Irrawaddy from Mandalay on the west bank. It was however never finished after a prophecy went round saying Payagyi lè apyi that, moksoe thonnya kap – "Once the great pagoda has been wrought, the Moksoe dynasty will come to nought" (). It was meant to have stood , tall enough to be seen from Shwebo in the west, the birthplace of the dynasty, towering above the Minwun Hills.

In 1976, while Roxy Music had temporarily disbanded, 801 (also referred to as The 801) got together as a temporary project and began rehearsing at Island Studios, Hammersmith, about three weeks before their first gig. The name of the band was taken from the Eno song "The True Wheel", which appears on his 1974 solo album Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). The refrain of the song—"We are the 801, we are the central shaft"—reportedly came to him in a dream (although it has also been noted that "Eight Nought One" acrostically spells his name). 801 performed three critically highly acclaimed concerts: in Norfolk, at the Reading Festival and the final concert on 3 September at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall.

In May 2000, Schofield made his Test debut against Zimbabwe at Lord's. Despite a crushing England win by an innings and 209 runs, the game was a frustrating match for the leg- spinner as Zimbabwe's ineptitude against the seamers meant that he was not called upon to bowl a ball, and he was out third ball for nought in his only innings. The second Test at Nottingham was better in terms of runs – he made a handy 57 from number eight – but in 18 less than controlled overs he took 0–73. In July 2007 he was picked in a preliminary 30-man squad for the Twenty20 World Cup in September, professing himself to have "worked very hard to get back into international colours".

Dreadnought was the most technologically advanced ship that had been built; it was better armed, faster and stronger than any other vessel afloat. According to the historian Jan Rüger, from the time the ship was launched, it took on cultural significance as a symbol and entered into public consciousness through songs and advertising. With the outbreak of the Second World War, Charles sent Vaughan along with their children to the United States, where they stayed there from 1939 to 1943, and The Fair Woman was published whilst there, although it was later published in England under the title Iron and Gold (1948). An exception to this more muted success was the short story or novella A Thing of Nought (1934; revised edition 1948), which returns to some of the same themes as The Battle to the Weak. As well as being critically acclaimed, it was an unexpectedly sold out within four days of publication.

Thus, if the lessee elects not to abide by the lease, no damages may be recovered by him if the lessor is prepared to allow the tenancy to continue. The Appellate Division has adopted the approach of an automatic transfer of rights and obligations from the original lessor to the purchaser. Another commentator, Currie, in the Annual Survey of South African Law 1995, considered the following question: Does a change in ownership of hired property following its sale give the lessee a right to choose whether to continue with the lease? According to Squires J, in the court a quo in Genna-Wae, this right to choose exists; later that year, however, in One Nought Three Craighill Park v Jayber, Heher J for the WLD held that this right does not exist.

It was planned that the station be reopened under the South Yorkshire County Council Transport Plan in 1990 when it would serve the Meadowhall Leisure complex to be known as "Tivoli Gardens" (Later "Bourbon Street") but this came to nought and the project never materialised. This was to have been served by trains on a diverted Sheffield to Lincoln service which would also call at the planned Swallownest railway station with the stations at Darnall and Woodhouse being closed. Plans were changed and the Lincoln service remained as it was with the line from Brightside Junction to Shepcote Lane, (the north end of Tinsley yard) being closed and lifted. About towards Rotherham along Sheffield Road can be found the site of Tinsley railway station which was on the South Yorkshire Railway.

Claude, Duke of Aumale, Leader of the First Siege Starting in April and continuing after the wave of iconoclasm in May, Catherine sought a negotiated settlement with the rebels of Rouen, proposing a readmission of the crown's officials in return for leniency for the rebels. This proposal ran afoul of the Catholic hardliners at court upon whom Catherine's power was dependant and the rebels, who wanted the Duke of Aumale's recently given commission over Normandy revoked as part of any deal, as such it came to nought. The Duke of Aumale himself arrived at the gates of Rouen on 28 May and summoned the city to yield to him but the rebels refused. Aumale began a siege, but having only 3000 men to his command and no siege guns, his bombardment of the town was ineffectual.

They were "so ill", writes the legate, "that we could scarcely sit a horse; and throughout all that Lent our food had been nought but millet with salt and water, and with only snow melted in a kettle for drink". At the same time, Lt Robert Macfie, of the RNAS, and Albert Nesfield, an Ealing-based engineer, devised a number of armoured tracked vehicles, which incorporated an angled front 'climbing face' to the tracks. In 1969 it was formally launched to protest the arrest of West Indian students at Sir George Williams University in Montreal.

St. Barnabas GAA Club played its first games in 1947. Formed by a group of Irish immigrants in Nottingham immediately after the end of World War II who gathered to play informal games of hurling and Gaelic football on the banks of the River Trent, the club has won championships affiliated to the Warwickshire, Derbyshire and East Midlands County Boards, in hurling, Gaelic football and ladies' Gaelic football. Taking its name from Nottingham's Catholic Cathedral and acknowledging support provided by local clergy (who provided playing kit and a pitch), the team initially played in green and red. There may have been an attempt to form an "East Midlands County Board", but this came to nought and it is reported that St. Barnabas had affiliated to the Warwickshire County Board in 1949 to enable it to play more games.

Barrington Bjorn Beckenbauer Yearwood (born 18 August 1986) is a Barbadian cricketer, similar in his short build to West Indies international Tino Best. Yearwood caught the eye in August 2003 when he took 7/37 for Barbados Under-19s against their Leeward Islands equivalents in the TCL Regional Under 19 Challenge; his captain Martin Nurse said that Yearwood had bowled with both pace and swing, and had bowled "very, very well"; while Yearwood himself said that he had "big goals" he wanted to achieve. He made his debut in List A cricket in early October 2003, when he represented West Indies Under-19s against Antigua and Barbuda in the 2003–04 Red Stripe Bowl. The match did not bring any success for him: he was out for nought as his team were dismissed for just 69, and bowled one ball — the last of the match — which went for four.

In the line "Whilst I, my sovereign, watch the clock for you" the word "sovereign" implies that the youth is held at a higher degree and "watch the clock for you" implies that he will wait for something to happen because of the youth's age or because he is waiting for the youth to recognise his love. The line "nor dare I question with my jealous thought" implies that he has considered that jealously will raise doubts in his head and might drive his love to madness. That this could end up driving the poet to insanity is suggested in this line, "but, like a sad slave, stay and think of nought." The Speaker is referring to himself as the slave again and is diminishing himself by implying no one would love so low and asking the fair youth to clear his mind of all thoughts of him.

Ferris played several seasons of county cricket (1892–1895) with Gloucestershire, for whom he scored his only hundred in 1893 but was otherwise something of a failure. At the end of his career, he appeared in a single Sheffield Shield match for South Australia in 1895/96, opening the batting but making nought, then finally in 1897/98 in two more games for New South Wales. In his last match, he made a half-century but did not bowl a single ball. Ferris enlisted in the British Army for the Second Boer War, but died at Durban, South Africa at the age of 33. It was reported, and for many years believed, that Ferris died from typhoid, or “enteric fever” but recent research by Max Bonnell established that he died suddenly after a seizure while travelling on a tram, shortly after his dishonourable discharge from the army.

The Diet of Torda, a painting by Aladár Körösfői-Kriesch Dávid published a series of books in Latin and Hungarian to defend his views in 1567 and 1568. His first Hungarian book, entitled A Short Explanation of How the Antichrist Beclouded the Knowedge of the True God, stated that the abandonment of the doctrine of the Trinity was required to secure the realization of the Kingdom of God. He emphasized that no peasant could receive salvation if that required an understanding of theological terms such as person and substance. To defend the idea of religious freedom, he quoted Gamaliel's advice about the imprisoned Apostles to the judges of the Sanhedrin from the Acts of the Apostles: Gamaliel suggested that the Apostles should be released without a punishment because if their work "be of men, it will come to nought", but if their work "be of God", the judges could not "overthrow it".

The six Boston IIIAs of 107 Squadron had taken off at and around bombed the IJmuiden steel works in two vic formations of three aircraft each, the first vic hitting the ancillary switch and transformer stations, despite making their bomb runs at "nought feet". Bf 109 fighters and Fw 190 fighters intercepted the first vic as it re-crossed the coast but the evasive action of the Bostons enabled them to escape without loss. If Shepard does not travel to Grissom Academy in time, Jack and the remaining students will be abducted by Cerberus. During the raid on Cerberus' Cronos Station headquarters, video footage of Jack being subjected to Cerberus surgery can be seen on one console, and in the room following that, she will appear as an enemy unit known as a Phantom and taunt Shepard with her signature battle cries from Mass Effect 2. In Mass Effect 3 Jack may be listed on the Normandy SR-2's memorial wall at the Crew Deck if at any point she does not survive the events of Mass Effect 2 and/or 3; her name will be engraved as Jacqueline Nought. Like other past and present surviving squad members, Jack makes an appearance in the Mass Effect 3: Citadel downloadable content pack, which adds character moments which will vary in content depending on dialogue and event choices or whether Shepard is in a romance with her.

On March 4–5, 1921, the Obelisk was replaced by an Ordinance BL 6-inch 26 cwt howitzer as part of an expansion of the South African Army Artillery Formation memorial to accommodate that gun (for this reason, two of the drinking troughs needed to be removed, first relocated to the local Forest Hill neighborhood to water horses and later to Walmer Town Hall where they stand today). 6 6-inch howitzers were gifted to South Africa as a token of appreciation for the contributions of the artillery brigade in action at the Battles of the Somme and Delville Wood. A Mr. Hoy's proposal to put the Obelisk back up in memorial to the victims of the 1918 Spanish flu came to nought.

Hampton and the NDP won only seven seats in the 2003 Ontario election, losing official party status for the first time since 1963. However, Hampton retained his seat and the party increased its share of the popular vote by 2 per cent. After intense lobbying to lower the minimum number of seats for party status, a compromise was reached which allowed additional funding for the NDP and more inquiry opportunities during Question Period. Ultimately, this controversy was all for nought as on May 13, 2004, the NDP regained official party status in a by- election in Hamilton East, where city councillor Andrea Horwath was elected to fill the vacancy left by the death of Liberal member Dominic Agostino. When Marilyn Churley resigned her Toronto—Danforth seat in May 2005, the NDP was granted official party status at first until the by-election, and then until the 2007 provincial election; NDP candidate Peter Tabuns won the seat.

The passage describes Gamaliel as presenting an argument against killing the apostles, reminding them about the previous revolts of Theudas and Judas of Galilee, which had collapsed quickly after the deaths of those individuals. Gamaliel's advice was accepted after his concluding argument: :"And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God." — The Book of Acts later goes on to describe Paul the Apostle recounting that although "born in Tarsus", he was brought up in Jerusalem "at the feet of Gamaliel, [and] taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers" (). No details are given about which teachings Paul adopted from Gamaliel, as it is assumed that as a Pharisee, Paul was already recognized in the community at that time as a devout Jew.

Coph Nia is the name given to the dark ambient act formed by Aldenon Satorial (Mikael Aldén). Its first release was the album That Which Remains, which was released in 2000 at Cold Meat Industry. The original members were Mikael Aldén (composition), Magnus Baecklund (lyrics), Clara Pahlén (vocals on Our Lady of the Stars and Sanctus), and Aasa Vildblomma (percussion). The three latter members, however, only participated on the first album: That which Remains (2000). The name itself derives from Chapter 3 of Aleister Crowley’s Liber AL vel Legis. The passage reads in full: “I am the Lord of the Double Wand of Power; the wand of the Force of Coph Nia—but my left hand is empty, for I have crushed an Universe; & nought remains.” (AL III:72) Itself thought to be a reference to Ain Soph. Coph Nia’s music tends to drift between dark ambient soundscapes and tracks that portray Aldenon’s interest in the Western magical tradition, and the work of Aleister Crowley in particular.

Ironically, the color bar that had marred the world heavyweight title by blackballing boxers of color remained in force even under Jack Johnson. Once he was the World's Heavyweight Champion, Johnson did not fight a black opponent for the first five years of his reign. In addition to Langford, he denied matches to black heavyweights Jeanette and to the young Harry Wills (who was Colored Heavyweight Champion during the last year of Johnson's reign as World Heavyweight Champion). Blacks were not given a shot at the title allegedly because Johnson felt that he could make more money fighting white boxers. In August 1913, as Johnson neared the end of his troubled reign as World Heavyweight Champion, there were rumors that he had agreed to fight Langford in Paris for the title, but it came to nought. Johnson claimed that Langford was unable to raise $30,000 (equivalent to approximately $ in today's funds) for his guarantee.

Madog's eldest son, Llywelyn, was killed soon after his father's death in 1160, Powys was then shared between Madog's sons Gruffydd Maelor, Owain Fychan and Owain Brogyntyn, his nephew Owain Cyfeiliog and half-brother Iorwerth Goch. Powys was never subsequently reunited, being separated into two parts; Powys Fadog (Lower Powys) and Powys Wenwynwyn (Upper Powys). Madog's death enabled Owain Gwynedd to force the homage of Owain Brogyntyn, Madog's youngest son, and effectively annex part of northern Powys. The poet Cynddelw Brydydd Mawr in his elegy on Madog said: :While Madog lived there was no man :Dared ravage his fair borders :Yet nought of all he held :Esteemed he his save by God's might ... :If my noble lord were alive :Gwynedd would not now be encamped in the heart of Edeyrnion Edeyrnion (or Edeirnion) was a commote inherited by Owain Brogyntyn and had been the home of his mother (who was not married to his father).

George Clifford Wilson (27 July 1902 – 18 May 1957) was an English first-class cricketer who followed his father, the more accomplished George Alfred Wilson, into a career as a right-arm fast bowler (and right-handed batsman at the bottom of the order) with Worcestershire. Born in Kidderminster, Wilson made his first-class debut in the local derby with Warwickshire at Edgbaston in May of the 1924 season, but did little, bowling only three overs and making nought in his only innings. The match was notable both for a hat-trick by Worcestershire's Charles Preece and for the county's desperate but ultimately successful struggle for a draw, having been reduced to 48/8 in their second innings when stumps were drawn. He also went wicketless in his second match, but took 2-7 in the second innings of his third. Wilson played a full part in the 1924 County Championship campaign, playing in 20 of Worcestershire's 24 games as well as one against the touring South Africans and finishing with 38 wickets at an average of a little under 24 runs apiece.

James Sedwards is an English guitarist, musician and composer, working predominantly in the field of alternative rock. Initially known for leading his own band Nought (or "Nøught"), he has more recently been known as a collaborative musician on projects including the Thurston Moore Group, Guapo, The Devil (with members of Country Teasers), Kish Mauve, Alex Ward & The Dead Ends, Zodiac Youth (with Youth and Zodiac Mindwarp), and Chrome Hoof as well as ongoing improvisation duo work with drummer Jem Doulton. Sedwards is noted for his guitar skills, having been a runner-up at the 1998 National Guitarist of the Year competition at Wembley, UK with the judges finding his composition and performance of the piece 'Cough Cap Kitty Cat' the "perfect blend of technical expertise and inventiveness." He also came in 2nd place in the first UK Riffathon in 2003, a nationwide guitar competition in aid of Action For Brazil’s Children Trust and judged by Jimmy Page and Brian May, where he played the 1973 live version of Led Zeppelin's 'Immigrant Song'.

The Brothers Grimm altered the tale they had collected, incorporating a motif found in other fairy tales of a child unwittingly promised (a motif found in "Nix Nought Nothing", "The Nixie of the Mill-Pond", "The Grateful Prince", and "King Kojata"), but not in the original version of this one. Unlike Twain's Yankee—who ultimately failed and saw all his efforts come to nought—Conrad Stargard is eminently successful in creating a new timeline in which a technologically advanced Poland becomes the dominant power in thirteenth-century Europe and Stargard himself is the most powerful man in Poland (though he chooses not to dethrone the King). One crucial difference is that in the depiction of the staunchly atheist Twain, the Catholic Church is dead-set against the interloper from the future and all his works, and it is the clergy which ultimately plays a major role in his downfall. Conversely, immediately upon his arrival in the past, Conrad Stargard meets and befriends a sympathetic Franciscan—who later on rises fast in the Church hierarchy, parallel to Stargard's own climb to eminence, and who ensures that the Church would welcome the time-traveler's New Order (and gain some considerable advantages to itself in the process). However, their official inquisition regarding Conrad (to decide if he is an agent of God or an agent of the Devil) never gets anywhere, due to the Church's excruciatingly slow bureaucracy.
