The campaign was intended as a nostalgic appeal to traditional values such as "neighbourliness, decency, courtesy". It was often interpreted as a campaign for socially conservative causes such as promoting the traditional family, though Major denied this. The campaign became the subject of ridicule when a succession of Conservative politicians were caught up in scandals.

The Francoist dictatorship officially recognized Algeria as a sovereign state in 1962 and proceeded to appoint an ambassador. Spain's bilateral relations with the Algerian republic, which were not good during Francoism, would later experience a crisis in 1977–1978, when Algeria—cut off from the 1975 Tripartite Madrid Accords on the transfer of the administration of Western Sahara—came to support the Canary Islands Independence Movement. A local arts community founded in the 1930s by Bill & Betty Farrell with the aid of the Pilgrim Trust, "To encourage tolerant neighbourliness and voluntary social services and give its members opportunities for increasing their knowledge, widening their interests, and cultivating their creative powers in a friendly atmosphere". Townshippers' Association was founded on October 27, 1979, in response to a declining anglophone population base and to the Parti Québécois government's introduction of the Charter of the French Language. The association promotes the interests and identity of the longstanding anglophone community in the region and hosts many cultural and community events. It is also mandated to maintain what it describes as "the spirit of neighbourliness that has long existed between French and English speakers in the region." The association had five thousand members by its first anniversary and claims about four thousand members as of 2011.

Kufuor's foreign policy was underpinned by what he termed "economic diplomacy". It is within this context that in Africa in general and in West Africa in particular, a good neighbourliness policy has been pursued, which saw Ghana under Kufuor brokering peace in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau, among other African states. On the global stage, Kufuor actively sought the establishment of a just and equitable international social and economic order, while promoting and safeguarding the interests of Ghana through bilateral and multilateral agreements.

Living in close proximity provided a valuable support system for families in the generally close-knit community. Grace Karskens' research into the history and archaeology of The Rocks revealed that women such as Eva May Avery and her mother Catherine Garel were known for their neighbourliness, earning them the community's appreciation and respect. The master plan aimed to build nine self-contained residential neighbourhoods (later increased to ten, and with three more added since) which would be "small socially mixed residential areas, each with [their] own individuality and [their] own centre, in order to promote neighbourliness and the social development of the town". The Nkomati Accord (officially known as the Agreement on Non-Aggression and Good Neighbourliness between Mozambique and South Africa ) was a non- aggression pact signed on 16 March 1984 between the People's Republic of Mozambique and the Republic of South Africa. The event took place at the South African town of Komatipoort with the signatories being President of Mozambique Samora Machel and Prime Minister of South Africa P.W. Botha. The treaty's stated focus was on preventing Mozambique from supporting the African National Congress to undertake violent actions in South Africa, and for South Africa to stop supplying the RENAMO movement in Mozambique. The treaty was met with disapproval from members of the SADCC and particularly from the ANC who were aware of the impacts it would have on their liberation struggle.

United Nations Security Council resolution 1498, adopted unanimously on 4 August 2003, after reaffirming resolutions 1464 (2003) and 1479 (2003) on the situation in Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), the Council renewed authorisation given to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and French forces operating in the country to assist the peace process for an additional six months. The Security Council reaffirmed the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Côte d'Ivoire, in addition to the principles of good-neighbourliness, non-interference and co-operation. It was important that the Government of National Reconciliation extended its authority throughout the country and that a disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration programme was implemented. The resolution extended the mandate of West African and French forces and requested both to report on the implementation of their mandates.

In late 1972 Nicholas Biwott transferred to the Ministry of Home Affairs on the personal recommendation of President Kenyatta to work with his Vice-President and the Minister of Home Affairs, Daniel arap Moi. In 1974 Biwott stood as a candidate for the Keiyo South constituency in the general election of that year but was narrowly defeated. Following the 1974 election Nicholas Biwott was recalled to the Ministry of Home Affairs as Under Secretary (1974–78) to Minister Daniel arap Moi, Kenya's Vice-President. With the ageing President Kenyatta unable to fulfil all the functions of the presidency, Moi took a leading role in the East African region with the result that Nicholas Biwott spent much of the next four years dealing with the Organisation of African Unity, the Commonwealth, the 'non-aligned' states and promoting the 'good neighbourliness' policy with states bordering Kenya.

Baháʼí House of Worship in Wilmette, Illinois, U.S. Baháʼí notions of progressive religious revelation result in their accepting the validity of the well known religions of the world, whose founders and central figures are seen as Manifestations of God. Religious history is interpreted as a series of dispensations, where each manifestation brings a somewhat broader and more advanced revelation that is rendered as a text of scripture and passed on through history with greater or lesser reliability but at least true in substance, suited for the time and place in which it was expressed. Specific religious social teachings (for example, the direction of prayer, or dietary restrictions) may be revoked by a subsequent manifestation so that a more appropriate requirement for the time and place may be established. Conversely, certain general principles (for example, neighbourliness, or charity) are seen to be universal and consistent.

In the preamble of the resolution, the Security Council reaffirmed the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, unity, good- neighbourliness, non-interference and co-operation among states in the Great Lakes region. It condemned the 1994 Rwandan genocide and subsequent conflicts in the region which resulted in widespread violations of human rights and international humanitarian law. Meanwhile, council members were aware of the connection between the illegal exploitation of natural resources and arms trafficking in fuelling the conflicts in the Great Lakes region, particularly the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There was concern at the impact of the conflicts on the humanitarian situation throughout the region and the implications on the region's security and stability, which was apparent in cases of cross-border movements by armed groups such as the Lord's Resistance Army, which had resulted in the deaths and displacement of people in northern Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan.
