Specimens were first found in Australia's Ediacara Hills, but recent research has concentrated on the numerous finds near the White Sea in Russia, which cover an interval of time from . Giving up density (GUD) is the food density within a patch when the animal will choose to move on to other food patches. It was initially designed to record the rainfall regime in Catalonia, but eventually spread throughout the world. It consists of a rotating drum that rotates at constant speed, this drum drags a graduated sheet of cardboard, which has the time at the abscissa while the y-axis indicates the height of rainfall in mm of rain. The Otoitidae is the ancestral family of the Stephanoceratoidea and is known only from a relatively short interval of time within the Bajocian stage at the beginning the Middle Jurassic and begins with Docidoceras.

With this season's drilling scientists will be able to make those connections with more certainty. The requirement of mutual exclusion was first identified and solved by Edsger W.
