However, Kathleen Wiedel of TV Fanatic gave the episode only 3 stars out of 5, stating that the episode "really strayed too far into whole plot references to be altogether enjoyable for its own sake", how previous and similar episodes have already used the "humans are the real monsters" trope, and the lack of impressiveness at Bill's outrage at the Doctor's inability to save everyone all the time. Scott Collura of IGN gave the episode an 8.2/10, looking at the structure of the story, stating that the episode follows the same pattern that the previous two used, another a one-off that shares similarities to the classic era. He also praised the fact that as "Bill wades deeper into the exciting insanity of the Doctor's lifestyle, she also realizes that it's not all fun and games". Daniel Jackson from Radio Times gave the episode a full 5 stars, praising the story for its multi-layered structure and exploring the hidden depths in the characters.

Baburao Patel of the film magazine Filmindia (December 1957) described Mother India after its release as "the greatest picture produced in India" and wrote that no other actress would have been able to perform the role as well as Nargis. A review in a British magazine Monthly Film Bulletin in 1958 remarked that audiences in UK should be grateful that the international version was shortened by 40 minutes, and termed it a "rag-bag pantomime". After its US release in 1959, Irene Thirer reviewed the film in the New York Post in which she praised its "striking dramatic appeal", but feared it might not be accepted by American audiences due to cultural differences. In a 1976 article in the journal Studies: An Irish Quarterly Review, author Michael Gallagher found the film "an amazing mixture of political allegory and cheap musical, a cross between the impressiveness of Eisenstein and the banality of Show Boat".

The pair spent the latter part of 1880 and into January 1881 with back-and-forth additions and revisions (the composer in Genoa, the librettist in Milan and meeting only once),Phillips-Matz, p. 658 all of which are heavily documented in the Verdi-Boito correspondence, the Carteggio Verdi-Boito, and significantly quoted in Budden. All this was the build-up to performances in Milan the following March, although the composer was constantly concerned about the suitability of the singers engaged there for that season, and he threatened to withdraw the opera on more than one occasion. The result was the contrast, which Parker describes, between the original 1857 act 2 finale, "set in a large square in Genoa, [as] a conventional four-movement concertante finale, a grand ceremonial scene" whereas, in the 1881 revision, "[Verdi] injected into the heart of the work an episode of enormous vividness and power, enriching the character of Boccanegra in such a way that his subsequent death scene gains considerably in impressiveness".
